What to Know

Critics Consensus

While it offers a few laughs and boasts a talented cast, Seth MacFarlane's overlong, aimless A Million Ways to Die in the West is a disappointingly scattershot affair.

Anthony Lane The New Yorker The one person who gets the balance right, weighing parody and homage, is the composer, Joel McNeely, whose opening theme stirs hopes and memories that the movie cannot match. Jun 16, 2014 Full Review Leonard Maltin leonardmaltin.com "A Million Ways To Die In The West" may remind MacFarlane's core audience of what they're missing by not having Westerns as part of their regular movie menu. Jun 2, 2014 Full Review Jonathan Romney Observer (UK) It's essentially Blazing Saddles, only the fart jokes aren't quite as fresh. Rated: 1/5 Jun 1, 2014 Full Review Danielle Solzman Solzy at the Movies It's longer than it needs to be but A Million Ways to Die in the West still brings the laughs--and what should be considered an iconic soundtrack--over a decade later. Rated: 4/5 Dec 27, 2024 Full Review JD Duran InSession Film There weren’t many big narrative surprises but there were several cameos that are totally worth seeing. If you like this kind of comedy, you’ll get what you want. Rated: B Aug 19, 2024 Full Review Peter Counter That Shelf Say what you want about Seth MacFarlane, that man can write a "guy pooping into a hat" joke that'll really make you think. But unfortunately, too much of A Million Ways To Die In The West is oddly serious and laugh-free. Aug 13, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews

Bob L Really wanted to enjoy this but it ended up being a real slog to just get through. The story is obvious and predictable, and it feels like it's not sure what type of movie it wants to be. The acting, in particular Seth, feels out of place with the time and setting. The humor, let's face it, the reason you came to watch this, falls flat. Predictable, and mostly crude. I'm no prude and are OK with crude, just feels like it was entirely reliant on cheap gags. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 04/20/25 Full Review Steven L Absolutely loved the humor. One of the funniest movies i’ve seen in a long time. I watched it with nine long-term friends, and we all loved it. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/28/25 Full Review Stephen L Seth MacFarlane’s A Million Ways to Die in the West aims to blend irreverent humor with Western tropes, but despite a few solid laughs, it never fully comes together. MacFarlane, stepping into the lead role for the first time, plays a cowardly sheep farmer navigating love and danger in a frontier full of absurdly gruesome deaths. The film’s best moments come from its supporting cast—Charlize Theron brings charm and balance, Neil Patrick Harris commits to his over-the-top mustachery, and Liam Neeson makes for an intimidating villain. However, the humor is wildly inconsistent, often leaning too hard on crude gags and drawn-out bits that overstay their welcome. MacFarlane’s self-aware approach sometimes works, but his presence as the lead lacks the comedic weight needed to carry the film. While A Million Ways to Die in the West has flashes of the sharp wit that made Ted a success, its meandering pacing and hit-or-miss humor keep it from being anything more than a sporadically amusing misfire. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/16/25 Full Review James E Aggressive comedy and easy parody material makes this a fun and easy film to get into. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/11/25 Full Review Ben N This is what happens when a person is given the reigns to a movie when they have outstripped their talent. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 12/21/24 Full Review Mark B It really does not know what it wants to be. Funny it has a few laughs, love story yea that does not work. Homage to the old westerns it try’s that. A Mel Brooks like film it really does not work. Action not really successful there. Ok free on prime not mad I watched it the cast is good. IfI went to a theater oh that I would be annoyed.
