Welcome to the world of Minecraft, where creativity doesn't just help you craft, it's essential to one's survival! Four misfits--Garrett "The Garbage Man" Garrison (Jason Momoa), Henry (Sebastian Eugene Hansen), Natalie (Emma Myers) and Dawn (Danielle Brooks)--find themselves struggling with ordinary problems when they are suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal into the Overworld: a bizarre, cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination. To get back home, they'll have to master this world (and protect it from evil things like Piglins and Zombies, too) while embarking on a magical quest with an unexpected, expert crafter, Steve (Jack Black). Together, their adventure will challenge all five to be bold and to reconnect with the qualities that make each of them uniquely creative... the very skills they need to thrive back in the real world.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Ostensibly a film about celebrating creativity, A Minecraft Movie provides a colorful sandbox for Jack Black and Jason Momoa to amusingly romp around in a story curiously constructed from conventional building blocks.

David Sims The Atlantic The film’s anarchy might reflect a lot of younger players’ first experience with Minecraft, where destruction can be just as fun as creation. Missing on the big screen, meanwhile, is the odd, remote atmosphere that drew me in. Apr 15, 2025 Full Review Brian Tallerico RogerEbert.com “A Minecraft Movie” is quirky and goofy enough to make one wish it held together better overall, but it’s also a likable venture. Rated: 2.5/4 Apr 14, 2025 Full Review Mark Kermode Kermode and Mayo's Take (YouTube) Jack Black and Jason Momoa together, they're okay; so it's perfectly unremarkable. Apr 11, 2025 Full Review Chris McCoy Memphis Flyer The real star of the show, and the only thing that makes A Minecraft Movie something other than an wildly successful corporate branding exercise, is Jack Black as Steve, one of the skins players can choose to represent themselves on the map. May 9, 2025 Full Review Matt Hudson Bloody Awesome Movie Podcast Surprisingly fun film that kids and teens will love. Full of in-game references and phrases, visually, this is an interesting experience. Momoa is a standout in a film that isn't great, but still offered a fun enough time at the movies May 8, 2025 Full Review Tony Yang In Review Online Hess’ film contains some entertaining moments, occasional jolts of energy that break up the perfunctory one-liners and endless blur of lifeless explosions, but not enough to prevent the final experience from becoming utterly forgettable. Ricardo my daughter and I have a great time, movie is not perfect but is fun a lot of the jokes are actually funny and good action Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/14/25 Full Review Joshua It wasn't the worst movie, but not the best either. It had its funny moments, but I didn't just burst out laughing so hard it hurt either. So I think a 3 star is fair if not generous. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/14/25 Full Review Walter kids are SO happy - tip the staff if u throw popcorn to celebrate Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/14/25 Full Review Hiran My boys absolutely loved the Minecraft movie! If your kids play Minecraft, it's a must-watch. The film brings the game’s world to life with clever use of characters and the classic blocky look. Surprisingly fun for adults too—well done, creative, and visually cool. Great family movie! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/14/25 Full Review Matthew A fun and adventurous movie! Full of laughs and excitement! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/13/25 Full Review W My kids love this movie so much Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/13/25 Full Review Read all reviews
