Aeon Flux Reviews

Mar 26, 2025

I might be effected by the anime. But it's pretty darn good.

Æon Flux (2005) is a frustrating example of how Hollywood can take a bold, innovative source material and strip away everything that made it special. Based on Peter Chung’s surreal, dystopian animated series, the film trades the original’s industrial, biomechanical aesthetic for a generic “garden” utopia that feels sterile and uninspired. Gone is the harsh, metallic world of the original, replaced by lush greenery and smooth, unimaginative futurism that fails to capture the eerie, oppressive atmosphere of the show. The plot is a convoluted mess, weighed down by unnecessary exposition and a nonsensical cloning twist that lacks the sharp wit and ambiguity of the source material. In the original Æon Flux, the storytelling was cryptic and fragmented in a way that made you lean in, forcing you to piece together the narrative. The film, on the other hand, over-explains everything while still managing to make no sense. It lacks the show’s dark humor, subversive edge, and willingness to challenge the audience. Then there’s the action—or rather, the lack of it. The original Æon Flux was stylish, brutal, and kinetic, with unpredictable, fluid movement that made every fight scene feel dangerous. In contrast, the film’s choreography is stiff, uninspired, and devoid of impact. Charlize Theron does her best, but the PG-13 action sequences are watered down and feel like a series of rehearsed gymnastics routines rather than real fights. Ultimately, Æon Flux is a neutered, unimaginative adaptation that fails to capture the spirit of the original. If you’re looking for a visually stunning, thought-provoking, and thrilling cyberpunk experience, skip the movie and just watch the anime instead.

This movie is so camp! It feels like a fever dream really. Take the movie for what it is and not what it could have been. The world building shows signs of great potential. Everyone in the cast commits to the bit sincerely. All heart, no brains sort of movie.

The original cartoon never made a ton of sense so the movie following a similar trait is not unusual. After 20 years it has become even more obviously stylized action over everything else.

I really loved it but people pointed out that it was actually not a great movie and I was just enjoying watching a female protagonist kicking butt. I would have liked her even better without the love interest.

Charlize was as captivating as usual. The story multilayer and fascinating in concept, and the action well paced. Would be nice to see a director's cut some day.

Very underrated film. We know now that the film was heavily cut by the producers but it still shows some amazing futurist locations and costumes. The choreography of Charlize Theron jumps are also pure visual beauty. If the second part of the film seems to rush to the smart ending we can guess what the film could have been without the producer's cuts. In some way, films are traces of projects and imagination and you need to enjoy the traces of the invisible film as much as the film itself on the screen. Aeon Flux is this kind of film.

Theron is so beautifully sublime in this movie that it's hard not to take much joy in watching her. The cinematography has an anime feel that is quite pleasant. The story is solid and imaginative but it doesn't flow as well as it should. The sound is the movies weakness. I had to take it down during the action moments and turn it up for the dialogues.

I liked the movie to some extent but it is a little dull and weird making it hard for some to follow. I think the editing is what lowered the movie.

One of the most compelling visions for far-future technology I've ever seen in a film. Nothing looks like technology as we understand it, but rather tends to be naturalistic and integrated seamlessly into its surroundings. It is a clever realization that at the far end of the chain of progress, things won't look more technological, but less. The pacing and score give room for this world to breathe.

Surprisingly dull for a sci-fi action film based on an anime. The story is dry and poorly paced, with impactless action and constant info dumps, and designs are too clinical to save it.

A lazy, and proposterous screenplay combined with paint by numbers action scenes results in arguably the worst movie of Charlize Theron career.

It's a nice movie. I don't know what people dislike so much about it.

It isn't that good. The acting has the classic 00's style of showing no emotion and just explaining everything in a monotone way for 95% of the runtime. There is no humor, charm, chemistry or emotion to break up the boring, dull and lifeless performances. The thing is you can tell these actors have presence and charisma but their being told to keep it in check and not show it. The cinematography has well framed shots and is ok overall with a lot of effort put into the set designs but the problem is there is nothing going on in the backgrounds, nothing pops and feels lifeless. The action scenes don't even feel like Science Fiction they feel like there from a generic action film. The music is your standard generic affair. The bad editing is the worst part of this film, it just feels like things happen with no logical flow with nothing visually to explain so they have to lifelessly explain the plot with boring dialogue to keep you from being totally lost. This also feels like a Sci-Fi & Action Film that can't figure out how to make the two feel like one cohesive style. This should tank the pacing but the one saving grace is this is EXTREMELY short for a Sci-Fi film so its ok. This plot has potential for a lot of commentary and a riveting thrill ride in a Sci-Fi setting but because they have to explain the actual story every minute, it fails terribly at executing on this great idea. Honestly unless your a die hard fan of the animated series I can't recommend this to anyone. Skip this completely.

Another generic futuristic movie that tackles all the ridiculous troupes when it comes to rebellion, love, and choices.

Not really that good of a movie, but it's action packed tho. Some of the fight scenes are pretty awesome.

Those of us who liked the graphic-based adventure will pretty much enjoy this cinematic offering. Those who discover Aeon Flux for the first time here will also dig the scene. Decent storyline, great action, solid special effects, engaging but stiff acting. Basic good stuff for sc-fi action adventure fans. Rent this. Charlize Theron as Aeon Flux just didn't do it for me though -- when so many other femmes of note out there could have pulled this role off much more convincingly with more grit, raunch and edge. Charlize Theron is too beach, volley ball, and sunny for the adamantine, dark, dangerous and angst-ridden Aeon Flux of yore.

I would enjoy watching Charlize doing her laundry but even her beauty and charm wasn't enough to save this.
