After the Wedding Reviews
I enjoyed this one as I thought it was an interesting storyline that keeps you guessing and also a great cast. I was able to figure out the ending before it happened, but still a good movie overall and worth watching
5 mins into watching "After the wedding" (suggested by Netflix as part of "Gems for you") and I am already irritated beyond words. In what looks like Madurai, and has Tamizh writing on walls and signboards, the back ground chatter in this yet-another-firang-made-movie-about-India is in Hindi!!! Yep. that'll happen! 😂 And when people finally begin to speak in Tamizh, the clueless and presumably brainless and extremely lazy person who did the subtitles tells us (speaking Bengali)... Whaaaat? The film casting opened with shots of a South Indian temple and tank where a white woman was teaching meditation, and the background chants coming from the temple were the famous Maharadshtrian song in praise of Ganesh, "jai dev jai dev jai Mangal murti" which is in Marathi!!!!... Is the film maker and entire crew labouring under the misconception that all indians speak the same language? Or that the languages are geographically interchangeable??? Looks like this is going to be one of those.... I stand corrected. The subtitler is obviously stone deaf and working by guesswork, because recitation of Johnny Johnny, yes papa, by a bunch of kids, is also "singing in Bengali" and all other speech both Hindi and Tamizh are marked as (speaking in Bengali) as someone who speaks all 5 of these languages, I feel particularly outraged!!! oh my god!!!!!!!!!
The scenery is great in this film. Depicts some tranquil places in India. I found it a bit slow moving though and without revealing spoilers, this sort of sob story has been done before. Not sure about the ending either. I started off liking it, the India scenery saved this film for me.
Julianne Moore tends to play damaged or downtrodden characters. This was another of those. It was okay, but a bit 'off' in a way I can't really define.
After the Wedding is not groundbreaking in any way but it's a good drama to watch once. The story is subtle and the pace is slow but the deeper meaning is enough to keep you invested.
Julianne Moore was very good as usual. Michelle Williams, who I generally consider a very good actress, seemed off-kilter. She says little, and tries to make up for it with facial expressions which only turn out to be inane or baffling. I'll have to watch the significantly higher-rated old foreign version. I suspect it works in a way this one just did not.
In this case, we get a cast (most notably Julianne Moore), who are capable of so much more than what has been written for them in this otherwise subpar, lackluster production.
The acting by Michelle Williams is amazing. The plot and ending fall a little short but I don't regret watching it.
Pretty original movie, and very well acted of course. I can't remember a movie with the same synopsis. Just another one where the critics got it wrong as the audience rating is the opposite.
La pelÃcula cuenta con excelentes actuaciones, nada más, se puede disfrutar cuando se pasen canales y no se encuentre que ver, pero para el cine no.
An American remake of a Danish film, After the Wedding is a captivating character drama. When the manager of an Indian orphanage comes to New York to secure funding from a wealthy businesswoman she soon discovers that her potential benefactor has an ulterior motive. Starring Julianne Moore, Michelle Williams, and Billy Crudup, and film has a solid cast that delivers some good performances. However, the script is a little thin and the pacing is kind of slow. Yet while it has some weaknesses, After the Wedding is a powerful film about love and family.
All I can say is WOW! The acting is incredible and the story will stay with you for a long time afterwards. Get the tissues ready!
Moore and Williams give powerful performances as both women of purpose and mothers. Williams is about to be the beneficiary of Moore's good will, but finds out that it's a much more complicated situation.
The trailer was completely deceiving!
Haven't seen the original. While some of the plot developments and characterisation work is untidy, the film summons plenty of intrigue by masquerading and gradually revealing the secret being harboured on which it's built. Boosted by the fine performances.
Could be good, but is that kind of movie where you get really angry because all the caracters seems to be really stupid.
With big stars attached to this movie you will expect big things, that's why the critics are so rash giving it an acceptable rating. I, on the other hand, let the movie flow, it's an acceptable movie, a little predictable on the plot but solid nonetheless.
Mediocre script and direction. The decisions of the characters are inconsistent. The movie is unnecessarily slow and some scenes are pathetic, like the orange juice scene. I left the room before the movie was over, I failed to connect with the story or any of its characters.
