Always at the Carlyle Reviews
I love documentaries. Some are good and some are bad. This one is excellent! I found fun, and informative. The history of the Carlyle, and its famous visitors and residents is amazing. I highly recommend seeing this film.
Wonderful documentary about New York City's The Carlyle hotel which has become a favourite place to stay among celebrities and dignitaries due to its reputation for discretion. Great interviews with long time staff members and loyal guests and celebrities such as George Clooney, Anjelica Huston, Jeff Goldblum, Harrison Ford and so many more. Filled with great stories and history, this is a great watch and immediately made me want to visit its cafe and bar next time I'm in New York.
Given the star studded cast featured in the credits, my hopes for this film were high. I was extremely disappointed in the information provided (or lack thereof). Rather than taking us back in time to understand the history of such an iconic NYC establishment, all I got out of the Carlyle was a list of past celebrities and royal patrons. If you're interested in funny, never-before-told stories about the Hollywood elite you may enjoy Always at the Carlyle, although I would argue even for those viewers the hour and a half runtime is far too long. If you wanted a historical story on a piece of New York City lore, you won't find much here. In fact, those interviewed will tell you how much they won't or can't tell you about the hotel and their guests...you'll probably wonder why they are even featured in the documentary.
It was a nice review of the history and the style of one of our favorite places to catch a show in NYC. Probably only for those who are familiar with the property.
This is a witty and entertaining documentary about a luxury hotel in New York City. There is some history but it tends to focus on the celebrities who have stayed there. There are also some great interviews with the many staff members who work or worked there, some of whom spent long, satisfying careers at the hotel.
While being a insightful look in a legendary hotel, its main focus really is to reveal secrets from a place we were never going to get. Does that make this documentary pointless, or just escaping entertainment ?
Great trip through Old School NYC. Delightful staff
The film captures the patina and charm of a landmark operation, and the critics seem to miss the point, having no curiosity about the smart set - from any era.
I never walk out of movies but this was honestly excruciating. I did however sit through 45 mins of it, so here is what I'll tell you: It's got an all-star lineup of talking heads, yet there's no talk. No juicy stories, gossip or crazy anecdotes about the celebrities who have stayed at the Carlyle. Which is honestly why I came and thought I was getting. Instead we have to hear about how good the elevator operator and concierge are at their jobs for like 20 mins. They do seem lovely, but kind of a yawn! And how bougie the hotel is over and over (rooms range from 4K to 10k a night, fyi). These filmmakers can't crack any of the staff to tell us some dirt about this place, which is frustrating after you hit the half-hour mark. The most we get is like - "oh George Clooney is the best guest." This feels more like an ad for the Carlyle, not a documentary. The trailer tells you all the good stuff. Which is a shame considering all the stars and the really nicely framed shots. I would have given this no stars, but the one star is for the DP.
made me nostalgic for new york
