Amour Reviews

Haunting more than any horror film. Heart wrenching more than any drama. A true achievement in cinematic mastery from Haneke.

Haneke is ruthless in this depiction of tragic love story. Really makes you afraid of one day being old and as defenseless as the main characters portrayed here.

This is one of those quietly devastating motion pictures that always seem to come out of Europe that come across rather subtly while you're watching it and hits you like a ton of bricks as you reflect on the experience. I cared for an elderly grandmother in my home during the last months of her life, so this was an especially emotional voyage for me. Anyone who has experienced the deterioration of a loved one will most likely find much to relate to here, especially in the small moments. I so much appreciate that there aren't a lot of emotional fireworks and overly emphatic speeches about the quality of life. This is a simple story about the efforts and sacrifices one makes in order to care for someone he loves. Riva received all the awards attention here, and it is so very deserved, but in many ways Trintignant is the emotional center of this movie, and it's a devastating performance that deserves as much respect and admiration as his co-star. The end feels a bit drawn out, and I think it could have been 15-20 minutes shorter - that's my only minor quibble that keeps me from giving it a perfect rating. But this is such a wonderful, heartbreaking film that contains moments I will seriously never forget.

I watched this film years ago, and now I have two feelings about it : fear and humility. I won't risk revisiting it, so vivid are those feelings in my memory.

A hard to watch movie that punch you in the heart until the slow-paced make it lose its steam. Amour shows the tragedy of Alzheimer with an honest and grounded point of view, there is a lot of respect there despite a very sensible subject. It's hard to not feel sad for someone losing the love of their life over an illness that makes them slowly disappear. Following the husband and the daughter is heart-breaking and relatable even if you haven't gone through the same. The movie starts strong but with a slow-pace and some confusing time-jump, it lost its grip. It's still a good movie, but not as emotional as it started. It ends with a thought-provoking finale which is both controversial and relatable and reward the viewers after a dragging middle act.

Hanake in his way has made a powerful and beautifully shot film about, aging, death, and grief. One of his best.

Probably director Michael Haneke's most restrained, compassionate, and sensitive film, Amour is the story of Georges (Jean-Louis Trintignant) and Anne (Emmanuelle Riva), and elderly couple, deeply in love and devoted to each other without reservation. However, their lives change forever when Anne suffers a stroke and the couple are forced to come to terms with an unimaginable future. As usual, Haneke directs the film with an Ozu-like sense of austerity, often using long takes and a stationary camera to tell his story. However, as stylish as the movie may be, the primary reason for watching are the performances from Trintignanat and Riva, sensitive and heartbreaking throughout. The film's laconic pacing may not be for all tastes, but patient viewers will find it to be a compelling story of love and commitment.

The best international movie ever made!

What I'd hoped for from a French production. Warm, sobering, sad, thought provoking, artistically beautiful.

This is a tough watch at times. Its quite touching, with the 2 main characters clearly being in a loving relationship. The acting is good and the dialogue is poignant at times. Its a thoughtful watch, with a bit of a slow plot pace but as time moves on, we get more of an idea of how deeply in love and reliant on one another the 2 main characters are. I found myself feeling quite sorry for the husband, the situation he finds himself in. This is a bit of a sobering watch but its certainly a good watch. I'd recommend this film, yes.

If you want to be sad and completely waste 2 hours of your life that you will never get back then this is the perfect film for you. Excruciatingly boring

The discomfort and the beautiful love story declared in this film is totally unforgettable. Simply a masterpiece.

SPOILER. Smothering your wife when she is too senile to be independent is not an act of deep love. I tried to smother my wife when she turned 30, but she didn't see it as an act of love.

It's said that to deal with the inevitability of aging and death, most people subconsciously treat the phenomenon as something that doesn't affect them and them alone; these are real and painful events that happen to everyone, they just won't happen to ME. Amour confronts what happens when a longtime, co-dependent couple can no longer ignore this closing act, as Riva's Anne suffers a stroke and the slow loss of her physical independence, acting out in anger and fear at her need for care and humiliation despite the continued care from her husband, Trintignant's Georges. Their relationship's decay is not graceful or beautiful on the surface, but it does feel very human. Anne is understandably upset at her condition, being infantilized or treated as subhuman by those around her. It's the strength of the underlying bond between the pair that gives the film its heft, the willingness to continue for as long as possible (and end when necessary). It's uncomfortable and distressing, and that's what makes it great. Riva and Trintignant are both so great, feeling tender and subdued as a result of long careers in film. An unconventional love story whose bittersweet nature gives it a distinct identity. (4/5)

Hands down the best and most realistic romantic tragedy I've ever watched. Director Michael Haneke pulls off a miracle by taking a nihilistically gut-wrenching subject and turning it into a work of beauty. Wonderful pacing and cinematography complimented by accomplished actors along the way. Full review: https://rickybinney.wordpress.com/2020/05/13/amour-love-2012/
