Keep in mind this is French speaking film not English so requires subtitles cudo to those that can handle it.
A woman (Amira Casar) is discovered by a man (Rocco Siffredi) cutting her wrists in the restroom of a gay bar. After he takes her to a clinic to get her self-inflicted wounds taken care of, she expresses her opinion that men hold a great fear and hatred of female sexuality. She wishes to explore this matter. She tells the stranger that she is willing to pay him to watch her during her most private moments. There is no need to touch her; he only has to observe. If he likes what he sees, he is welcome to join her in bed. Based on the novel and screenplay by Catherine Breillat, "Anatomie de l'enfer" is not an easy film to digest given some of its undercurrents, like hatred of men and male homosexuals, as well as sexual images that really push the boundary between art and pornography so it is a bit of a surprise to me that I was able to stick with it. Perhaps it is because, to me, its thesis is clear: the woman of interest considers gay males as being a part of an elite brotherhood that detests women, thereby only engaging with other males sexually-what they consider to be their equal-and so she takes the man through a sort-of experiment where she can "prove" that a woman's sexuality is so powerful, it can turn male fear or resentment, homosexual or heterosexual, toward women into something positive. The picture is anything but conventional. The two characters do not even have names. They are as detached from one another as we are to them. Despite this, there are plenty of contrasting elements worth looking into. For instance, although penis, vagina, breasts, and anus are shown generously on screen, I did not find them erotic. These body parts are often accompanied by images that can be considered disgusting or disturbing. The way a gardening tool is used quickly comes to mind. Even more shocking is the woman's reaction to it. Another example involves the disparity between the seemingly rich ideas inside the woman's mind and the sparseness of her cottage house. It can be interpreted that although her thoughts are aplenty, they hold very little meaning. At times the material attempts to reach at anything in the dark. About halfway through, it is mentioned that an ocean is both a male and female image but its elucidation is more confusing than thought-provoking. When this sort of thing happens, which occurs more than half a dozen times, it feels like the screenplay is trying too hard to come off as meaningful. There is a self-consciousness in the bold script. Most importantly, I did not buy into the man's newfound feelings toward the woman. What he considers to be a profound realization in terms of his relationship with women (or just the woman he spent bizarre four nights with), I interpreted as trauma. I was neither moved intellectually or emotionally nor did I feel like it was a worthwhile experience as art or pornography. Although it is propelled by extreme elements on outside, "Anatomy of Hell" seems to just coast among them. Film-Review.org

Good premise and I do like the film, but I can't help but feel there is something missing. This film should be viewed more as an art film though, for anyone wanting to watch it, as I feel this might be the reason the audience feels cheated, as they thought they were going to be seeing something else.
Absolutely despicable film. Now, normally just being heavy handed isn't enough for me to hate a film, but this film can't even seem to get its own moral values it's preaching right. Breillat beats us over he head with yet another "all men are evil" show, but it gets worse: the film is aggressively homophobic in addition to misandrist. Watch the film's pretentious fans defend the homophobia by saying the gay guy was a "symbol". Then come some of the most disgusting things ever shown on screen, not as bad as Serbian Movie but still deplorable. If you find this film "artistic" you must be cinematically sheltered.
I had mixed emotions about this film. It kept shifting between a clinical sex-ed experiment and long diatribes asserting vague, sweeping diagnoses of misogyny and its roots. Ultimately, it feels like the intent of a bitter (female) director to use psychoanalysis to analyze the plight of women (a common but reductive and interpretive method), while the film itself mostly just works as a source of sadistic, voyeuristic pleasure. By the end the audience is just left confused.
Seemed interesting at first, yet it was nothing special at all. Actually the movie seemed somewhat homophobic, as it was trying to say that gay men are in a way terrified of the female body and sexuality. Some of the scenes were memorable, mostly because of their shock value, not because of some deeper meaning (or maybe they had some meaning which I wasn't interested in enough to understand). In the end the movie seemed like a waste of time and mild disappointment, since it did a poor job at delivering what was trying to be portrayed, nor did it stimulate any interest in me to search for deeper meaning in the plot.
One of the strangest films I've seen, an overintellectualisation of sex... in which a woman gets a man to spend 4 nights with her and they increasingly explore the nature of sex... or perhaps of the politics of the female body. It will put off all but the most dedicated of film watchers as (and I don't usually include spoilers) they have sex (erect penises and all) during her period, tampons going in and out and he withdraws covered in her blood. As I said, it's not for everyone... Is it gratuitous? Probably; in equal amounts to its pretentiousness. But that doesn't leave it completely without merit. Give me a while and I might come up with the merit.
I don't get Anatomy of Hell. It seems to be preaching something, but I'll be damned if I can figure out what. And even if I could figure out the "what", I would still point to the lack of character as being a major strike against it. Without characters (and the wooden tropes portrayed by Amira Casar and Rocco Siffredi do not count), this is simply message and image. And, as mentioned before, the message is incomprehensible, at least to my eyes. And the image is just nakedness and acts of nakedness. Which is basically what this boils down to.
An eccentric movie. A Misogynist meets a narcissus(imo). The movie is good in parts..the effort to generate a feeling of revulsion towards another's body comes across well.
Almost puked twice, this movie deserves negative 4 stars. Dude drinks a glass of water with a used tampon in it....enough said
Hum. Ciao.
