Arachnophobia Reviews

Mar 24, 2025

While thrilling in all the right places, this adventure/horror flick also packs some wry satire and a much-needed send-up on the hostility of small town communities.

The title speaks to itself for those who are very very afraid of spiders and it did very well made to make us scared and laughed to protect of those who are afraid of spiders and Frank Marshall who've produced all Spielberg's films you can tell what Frank is cooking and knows Spielberg work in the 80's and really fantastic cast and really clever writing and amazing spiders effects because there are scenes that which one is real or fake just like Hitchcock's The Birds.

The movie isn’t a full on horror, but will scare some arachnophobes, decent acting. The film really pays tribute to animal-against-human movies, and the special effects are solid. Good movie to see if you like these jaws-inspired movies.

Still in the top 5 of my favorite animal horror movies: Ambience, actors, acting, cinematography, athleticism... everything is just right. Found out here that the movie is rated so poorly here because people don't like spiders... then don't watch it and don't rate it. It's not called "Arachnophobia" for nothing!

It is old... But it is still a must see and to me the BEST spider horror show ever.

Not as good as I remember, I rewatched it with my mum, probably last month and it didn't hold up, still good tho. 7/10.

Works pretty well as a Spielbergy light horror creature feature. Goodman was awesome in this.

It was good I'd recommend it. We thought the spiders were too small. The queen shouldve been massive. The exterminator was funny. The fat cop was absolutely stupid. The assistant was annoying. The spiders could fly

Going into this movie, I'm not scared of spiders unless I can't see them and they're on me, and this movie took every advantage of that second fact. I'm also from a region where we don't have incredibly dangerous spiders, maybe if you're from Australia arachnophobia would be justified. Like this titles description and reviews before me, I agree that this is a mix between a horror and a comedy, although I found myself pretty scared (although that's a low standard). I particularly enjoyed at the end where they cut to a close-up of the spider's eyes, almost made it look cute.

This film is not about spiders but about desire for the desire of the other. The majority of the small town characters display a risible arrogance, a self-regarding pettiness, a thoroughly relational amour-propre which condemns them to submission to the spook which rises with discourse and slavery to the judgement which does not die with God. In other words, it is a movie about webs, not spiders. It is a moral psychological inversion of the British apocalyptic nuclear war drama Threads, which aptly shows that we are already doomed by the social media which fills us all with so much hate -- hate born of the effaced resentment of lacking the courage to resists the system which sets us on our paths to destruction in search of the spirit of the superior in the image of the divine self of organized consciousness. Here, on the screen, is the essence of the Hegelian master-slave dialectic: homicidal rage upon denial of recognition of the impossible, respect and recognition to the death for the rational rule of the father, prestige and right of the ruling elite, hubris of the man who first declares 'I own; this is mine, my property, you must pay or keep out', and expects people to believe him. Arachnophobia is a meditation and a discourse on themes treated most effectively by Augustine, Rousseau, Hegel, Kojeve and Lacan. The phobia is not for arachnids but for what Nietzsche called moral spiders, or moral Tarantulas, rationalists who would to resolve the problem of this agony with a General Will, a Kantian World Government or any self-righteous Leviathan to resurrect the deceased divinity which inaugurated the whole mess. Not only this, but when the small town doctor from hell dies under mysterious circumstances, how is the one man in the position to gain the most from his passing and the one man least likely to mourn his demise not immediately the prime suspect?

I just really like good creature features. this is one of the greats

Arachnophobia is not a comedy. It's a horror film with comedic elements. Evil Dead 2 with spiders, this is not. Yes, John Goodman's exterminator was the best character in the film but sadly, he's only a bit part. Otherwise, the angle of spiders being treated as serial killers is played completely straight. Credit where it's due, the filmmakers do a really good job with tension, certainly do their job when it comes to creeping out audiences and manage to craft a memorable climax. But funny? I can't say I agree. There is levity but the story is otherwise taken very seriously. And as somebody who was expecting some delightfully morbid humour from a film that was marketed as such a thing, I was very disappointed on that front. I didn't really hate it, I was just hoping for a better balance between making me laugh and creeping me out.

An enjoyable creature horror film

Despite not suffering from any form of the titular phobia, Frank Marshall's Arachnophobia was enough to make even my skin crawl at points, its simplicity matched only by its horrifying suspense and whimsical humour. While a standout John Goodman isn't nearly in this movie enough, the Spielberg influence is strong in Marshall's affectionate and solidly built tribute to the classic Hollywood B-movie creature features that will have you squirming with excitement just as much as terror.

One of the finest creature feature from the 90's

Arachnophobia is really the best creepy crawling horror comedy, that is really fun and scary to enjoy and Frank Marshall who produced every Spielberg's work and he did really outstanding for this first time directing and really great cast especially John Goodman who stills the show and great writing and special effects.

This mystery/comedy was great. Jeff Daniels, John Goodman, Harley Jane Kozak, Julian Sands, Brian McNamara, and the rest of the cast did a great job in this movie. The plot of the movie was entertaining, thrilling, and dramatic. It's about stopping a new species of spider from killing an entire town and moving on to the next. If you haven't seen this movie yet, check it out sometime. Ignore the bad reviews this movie got, those people have terrible tastes in movies.

Arachnophobia is tense and frightening without being gory or off-putting. Hollywood doesn't make movies like this anymore. If it were made today, the spiders would be CGI, the movie would be a dull waste of time between cheap jump scares, and it would be forgotten the moment it ended. It has stood up well 30+ years later.

Creepy crawly creature feature not only mimics its titular phobia well out of discomfort but also then recent cult favorites under deadlier, smaller stakes which typically updates its genre's B movie formula with a nice cast to comedically maintain whatever needed comfort. (B)
