Arizona Dream Reviews
Real good movie , some good laughs. A little weird.
I usually like Emir Kusturica's films, but this one's even too weird for his standards.
Bizarre, tacky and ridiculous. It has some moments, but it doesn't make a whole movie. Jerry Lewis was my favorite part. I saw it for the director and cast. RUS.
The director's aesthetic delights in many artful scenes that escape Hollywood norms while evoking familiarity and wonder. The interesting mix of actors is enough pull on its own, and all the performances are fine. The plot unfolds surreptitiously under the whimsical distractions and includes contradiction and critique, much like a Lynch film, but there is something about this film that makes you wonder why there even has to be one frame, let alone one scene where a woman is getting slapped around, and it makes you realize that Dunaway has been slapped around in so many films. But its hard to condemn the writing/directing because the film ultimately spirals into entropy to any solution, the older woman gets the younger man but it's violent and unstable, the younger guy has a somewhat sweeter encounter with a woman nearer his age, but she is fatal, the older man marrying the younger woman is shown in his hypocrisy in criticizing the older women, and then he dies before his young fiancé has to marry him, so she gets to be free from a marriage that was making her weep. Good vs bad definitions get blurred and spiral down the plug hole via the magnetic pull the Depp character speaks about when relating what his mother had told him. It is rich, interesting but does lose its momentum and reason at times, to a degree where it loses the connection to the viewer, in other words it becomes boring. Well worth the watch for movie lovers, but I think it needs to be kept in mind that this director's controversy includes his support of Putin and Russia's treatment and action in the Ukraine, a dark and destructive streak that runs through his films.
This movie was great . Probably coulda be 30 minutes shorter tho Thats my only complaint at all 3.7
An absolute pinnacle of artistic achievement. Less colossal than Underground, but more piercingly personal; the heavier lyricism, along with the perfect score by Goran Bregovic, is what makes this film unforgettable, and the best by Kusturica.
do director de Gato branco gato preto e Time of the Gypsies este sonho Arizona é tão bizarro e imaginativo quanto seus trabalhos anteriores, embora também seja irritantemente indulgente e errático.
This movie feels like Kusturica tried to bring the gypsy vibe to America and it doesn't really fit. The other gypsy movies i watched were very surreal but it was a way to show some very realistic situations. This one was just weird and not really coherent. Unless he wanted to show the hypocrisy of it all; Americans shouldn't really criticize the gypsy culture with all the weird shit happening over there as well! Also not the best performance by Depp but Lili Taylor was just fantastic.
First watched this in my late teens and didn't get into it. Now in my mid forties and with a lot more life experiences I've come to really appreciate it. This film is quirky craftsmanship that really highlights life's absurdities. The older you get the more resigned to life's dreamlike non sensical events. The confluence of experience and imagery trying to make sense of a complex world. In the end you just shrug your shoulders and go with it, much like I'd suggest with watching this film. Love every aspect of it, the actors, the acting, the non plot, the characters, the absurdities, the human emotions, the imagery and of course the music. I loved watching Lili Taylor again and remembered when she was in a lot of movies back in the 80s and 90s. And Johnny Depp in his best looking years before his current day man child weirdness and slurred speech hobonism. Great acting from Vincent, Faye and Jerry- who would have thought such a combination would work? Love this more now then I ever did in the 90s.
Arizona Dream's overwhelming artsyness and unique style stands real close to being obnoxious...but my goodness, it's just so darn charming. I can confidently say I've never seen a movie quite like this. Gallo's weirdly hilarious obsession with North by Northwest, the meta-commentary on Depp himself, the questions about where the film's reality actually exists. It's surreal, crazy, and bursting with Lychian-lite life, whose oddities work so well by erring on the side of hilarity instead of pretension.
I was way into the dream logic, and was super glad Emir retained his voice into an English-language film, as so few directors manage to do. But he stayed with Dunaway and Taylor long, long after I'd lost interest in their characters and Depp's relationships with them. I was into the chaos, and the counterintuitive transitions between settings, and then it stopped, and got serious, and it really started to drag, and I mostly didn't care anymore. First half is fantastic though.
cinegeek.de Our Daily Free Stream: Emir Kusturica - Arizona Dream. In Arizona Dream hört man sehr viel Akkoredeon Musik. Johnny Depp spielt einen Fischverkäufer aus New York: "Most people think I count fish, but I don't. I listen to their dreams." Was nun geschieht? Lacking some sense in the end. This film is more about poetry and atmosphere, don't expect much action. Otherwise it is beautiful.
Quirky does not necessarily mean good... A man, Axel (played by Johnny Depp), is driven from New York to Arizona by a friend to attend the wedding of his uncle (played by Jerry Lewis). This is just a ruse to get him to work in the family car dealership. He meets an older woman and they form a relationship, much to the chagrin of his and her families. Weirdness ensues... The movie is pretty much just quirkiness for quirkiness sake. Weird stuff happens for no apparent reason. Hardly any character seems remotely sane. Worse than that, the characters are, for the most part, incredibly irritating. Much repetition of dialogue, simply because it then appears more arty. In actual fact, it is just plain annoying. Has a few good moments, but these are very few and far between. Good cast - Johnny Depp, Faye Dunaway, Jerry Lewis, Lili Taylor, Vincent Gallo - but wasted on a pointless script and "look at how arty I can be" direction. Pretentious nonsense.
