Australia Reviews
I honestly never want to know the people who did not like this film. With such a glitch, we would have nothing in common! I absolutely LOVED this movie! Beautiful cinematography on location in Australia, great cast, lots of chemistry… An exciting story where the bad guys get theirs in the end. Maybe that's not what "critics" like, but that's what I like! I've watched it several times now because I own it, of course.
An absolute underrated hidden gem of a film. If ypur looking for an old scholl Gone with the Wind type of film this is it. Its overly long, cheesy, corny type of romantic movie that they just don't make anymore.
Oh dear. I thought that with this classy cast and wonderful cinematography I was in for an epic movie. It’s 2.5 hours of my life I’ll never get back.
This movie is a classic now. Also don't miss faraway downs you'll love it if you love this one.
Disappointing and dull... no chemistry I had high hopes for this film .... shame
Absolutely Rubbish, cant belive i wasted 3 hours of my life on this!
Some of us in the room thought it was rubbish. The director dragged it out too long, but long enough to cover three lessons worth of English. The film tried to show groups of people, and was okay for the time period. Would watch again. (Class wide review)
While AUSTRALIA is my least favorite film directed by Baz Luhrmann, that doesn't mean it's a bad film! It's a beautiful film that I highly recommend to anyone who hasn't watched it! B-
It just fails. Jackman works hard but Kidman is annoying, it's another Far and Away for her and it's directed as if its a Tin Tin adventure.
I liked the movie, it was just too long. I swear it ended three times throughout the movie.
The movie was really good and I for sure recommend watching it, but it was just a little long.
The critics' percentage and the average grade of "Australia" prove that sometimes they don't have a heart. This is BY FAR Baz Luhrmann's best movie, and he directed "Moulin Rouge", which I already said it's spectacular. Yes, this movie is 2h45min long, but the duration is perfect. Firstly, because war and western are already genres that flow slowly, and secondly, the film wants (and needs) us to be next to the characters, to all of them, and the cast could not be better: Nicole Kidman gives the most human character of her entire career, she starts as a typical rich lady from England but as she starts a relationship with Hugh Jackman and Brandon Walters, she learns a valuable lesson about humanity, it's fantastic to see her evolution; Hugh Jackman is also deeper than he seems, he can be a fearless drover in the outside but in the inside, he's a very disrupted man; Brandon Walters is super talented, the cutest thing on the North of Australia, and the real protagonist of this movie; David Gulpilil is mystic, and David Wenham is an excellent villain, he doesn't use any of the common mannerisms of a western antagonist, his motivation, presence and intelligence are more than enough to make him imposing. The transitions between western, aboriginal mysticism and war are surprisingly organic, and the cinematography is precise. Furthermore, something that must be highlighted is the respect of the movie for the aborigine culture. Their rituals and costumes are never questioned (there's a specific one that I'll never forget), on the contrary, they're fundamental to the film's progression and to the establishment of a family dynamic. And like "Moulin Rouge", "Australia" is, essentially, a movie about love. Baz Luhrmann didn't abandon his bohemianism here and he should never abandon it. Film after film, it becomes more clear that he loves what he's doing, even in the terrible "Romeo + Juliet". The cinema industry needs more "romantic" directors.
This is hands down the worst movie I have ever seen. It was painfully cringe-worthy. A glorified advertisement of white Australia. So gross. So embarrassing. How Baz continues to gain financing after this utter disgrace is beyond me.
While some scenes and moments are fun, the film is just too often overly dramatic and/or filled with cheese.
My husband and I love this movie. The actors and director wanted to share a piece of history without people standing around talking about it, instead, they were living it. Watching Nicole Kidman RARing at cattle to prove she could drive them, to her singing in keys that didn't belong in 'Oz' her acting was wonderful, she made us laugh, cry, cheer. Hugh Jackman was strong straight to business and did things all in a day's work, which makes his manliness hard not to notice by "Sarah" and lady movie watchers, exactly as was planned & added fun. Their easy-moving romance is believable and so loving, not a mauling in a drunken stupor. Hubby & I are still in love 40+ yrs in, maybe that's why we love, not sure but we do.
Love this movie. Watch it many times! Nicole is so funny and sweet. Hugh is such a hunk. I love all the characters!
Basically half of this movie, although flawed with a drowning in the water tower, is a decent movie. It be better off as its own. But no, instead it's paired up with its awful sequel which kills the movie. For example, the bombing of Darwin which is highly covered by ads only last 10 minutes at most in the flim. So this flim is pretty bad. I recommend that it be skipped instead of screen by anyone else.
The movie was a good one, with great acting from Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman, and the kid, Brandon Walters, did a phenomenal job! The story however was very shallow, did not really create any emotional connection with the characters, and did not really give a clear and meaningful plot for the movie. Entertaining to watch if you have some time to spare and want to watch some excellent acting.
