Subtle complexity gives Away We Go a gentle resonance...
| Original Score: 4/5 | May 7, 2024
Bittersweet and charming, Away We Go drives on emotional terrain, resulting in a wholly atypical romantic comedy.
| Original Score: 3/4 | Aug 30, 2023
Rudolph and Krasinski have miles and miles of chemistry in this endearing road-trip movie.
| Original Score: 3/4 | Aug 2, 2021
It washed over me with the most genuine sense of good humor and honest emotions... these were wonderful people, people I want to strive to be like.

Overall, the film offers a shallow impression of America.
| Mar 4, 2021
A simple comedy with nothing unique enough to separate it from the pack.
| Original Score: 5/10 | Nov 28, 2020
Burt and Verona are amiable enough travelling companions and their trip does throw up some moderately amusing situations, but the film's episodic structure does get a bit wearying.
| Nov 24, 2020
The kind of small, indie flick that even mainstream audiences can love.
| Original Score: 3.5/4.0 | Sep 2, 2020
There is a core of sadness and loneliness in Away We Go, but too often Mendes drowns those plaintive elements in bellowing yuks and overplayed comedy.

Mendes and Kuras capture the beauty, sense of restlessness, and even certain holiness in each place our protagonists set foot.
| Jan 18, 2020
Emotionally anchored by gifted performances from [Maya] Rudolph and [John] Krasinski, AWAY WE GO is poignant, funny, heartfelt and filled with love and adventure. This is the journey of life at its simplest and most beautiful.

[Away We Go] proves to be a warm, engaging and utterly sweet little film.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Oct 25, 2019
The script, by husband-and-wife novelists Dave Eggers and Vendela Vida, has real heart, though, without being cloying.
| Original Score: 3/4 | Dec 6, 2018
To Mendes's credit, he makes them seem real and vulnerable rather than cloying and self-righteous.
| Nov 1, 2018
It glorifies a tepid response to tough circumstances -- set to indie music. Which is kind of nauseating. But adorable.
| Oct 18, 2018
It's sweet, I suppose, but it's also oddly inconsequential, fake and annoying.
| Aug 30, 2018
This mild, charmless comedy is not the provocation critics made it out to be.
| Apr 30, 2018
It's to the actors' credit that they retain their authenticity amidst all these well-cast but cartoonishly drawn cutouts. Then again, perhaps Mendes's point was to throw Burt and Verona into relief by making everyone else a little ridiculous,

I began to realize why I'd been resisting the film all along, in spite of its dogged charm. None of the places the couple visit seems remotely real.
| Jan 2, 2018
Overall, the movie was touching, funny at times, and really conveyed an imperfect couple's search for the perfect parenthood.
