Babylon A.D. Reviews

Mar 18, 2025

I could give this a 1 honestly but I feel like it's slightly better than that. That's the ebst comment this is going to get. Now on to the list of everything wrong. The acting is terrible....Vin Diesel is just terrible....like making J Law. in Dark Phoenix look like Christian Bale level bad. And I swear he brings down everyone else around him. Yeoh and the girl have no chemistry at all in this with him. There boring, lifeless at times, and the girl especially has such a crazy, stupid, ridiculous character. Believing Diesel and the girl would be lovers which is creepy to begin with makes Anikan & Padme in Attack of the Clones look like Casablanca. There also is a weird lack of consistnet villians in this too. I know theres the doctors at the end but they barely are in this. It's so weird. The cinematography is really bad. It feels like the different locales throughout this have no sense of style to them. The opening area doesn't even feel like it belongs in a dystopian Sci-Fi flick but like a modern war movie. NYC looks like Blade Runner. The snow areas and clu look like they belong in a generic action movie. And this makes it feel like there isn't even any direction in this. It literally feels directionless at times. Than add all the truly just bizarre scenes which get more and more stacked towards the end. The pregnancy, him being brought back days later, the weird creepy romance, her being the savior, the over the top stupid fights in this, and more. Music isn't good either. This starts with weird modern rap tracks and generic scores for a Sci-Fi flick that doesn't fit and than it just gets really boring and forgettable. Everything else is horrifcally bad. The opening scene I swear is just makes no sense and is stupid. Every action scene just comes out of nowhere with no build up at all. This jumps around like crazy at the end with crazy ideas that we had no idea or were let on about. The majority of the runtime is about them escaping pursuing forces and him delivering her to the destination and were never given any inkling of any of the crazy revelations at the end. (Or if we are I can't tell because of how poorly done this is) So it just comes across as beyond bizarre at the end and out of nowhere. Than it just feels like it ends too anticlimatically after all the nonsense. Skip this. Absolutely terrible

I thought it was great, very entertaining. It’s very easy to follow, and there’s some satisfying action packed moments.

Vinny D with another stellar performance, this guy does NOT miss!!! Wish I could watch this movie everyday but I got responsibilities and stuff. Love you Vinny

For its first hour, this is your average post-apocalyptic sci-fi film. Loner escorting a young girl with a secret. Things go waaaaaaaaay off the rails in the last 30 minutes.

I watched this on DVD recently. The artwork on the cover was appealing, and works well to get the DVD into your living room. However, Vin's Toorop character is a man of few words, and he occupies a world which looks artificial, dull, dark and cold. To make matters worse, the soundtrack had an abrasive style which annoyed me. It takes it's self very seriously but the story lacks narrative and is difficult to follow. I figured out that Toorop was taking a girl and her chaperone to New York and some kind of new religion is involved, but beyond that I was very unclear. Once the plot reaches the US the visuals and soundtrack improve immensely and you begin to wish you understood the story properly. There are some very exciting action scenes, involving portable surface to surface head seeking missiles which I had not seen before, and some of the scenes reminded me of the action in Tron. As a standalone technical exercise these scenes are excellent. I'm going to watch it again soon to see if I can get to grips with the story. For now though, it's a dogs breakfast of a movie which is difficult to understand or recommend.

Another vanity project from Vin Diesel

I haven't watched this movie in a while, but have seen it multiple times. If you're looking for a film with an elaborate story, and deeper meaning, you're wasting your time. If you simply enjoy a good action movie, this is a must see. The cinematography is beautiful. The acting, and FX are solid. And the story, while not overly compelling, is good, and easy to follow. I honestly have no clue why this film has been given such a bad score, and it honestly makes me sad.

The housing market wasn't the only thing that crashed in 2008 - wait, did Babylon A.D. MAKE the subprime mortgages collapse?! This movie came out August 08 and shortly after, on Sept. 14, 2008 Lehman Brothers, announced the largest bankruptcy filing in U.S. history at that time. It's that bad of a movie, I wouldn't be surprised if there's a connection here. Stranger things have happened. I wanted to like Babylon A.D. partly because I'm a fan of sci-fi and cyberpunk and party because Vin Diesel is one of my favorite actors. Yet....the pacing was off, plotlines were started and never finished, 0 background on any of the characters' backstory in more than a shallow distracted way. Lots of things were not explained but not done in a way that is clever & interesting like a mystery novel is. Felt like incompetent writing from screenwriter Éric Besnard. Perhaps a few half finished ideas on a chalkboard were haphazardly connected together. You never learn who the Noelites are, or get an explanation behind who or what Aurora is exactly other than a single line delivered near the end of the movie that still doesn't really explain her - very 1 dimensional. The rare moments you saw something remotely futuristic it was like, a hologram in the sky for 0.2 seconds. Pretty crappy special effects and the sci-fi elements were barely explored in detail, but more as some sort of 3rd wheel at the party you didn't mean to invite but felt obligated to out of a sense of guilt. That sums up the producer's dedication to any neat special effect you may glimpse in the periphery of your eye. Alain Goldman should have gone back to producing films like his other movies such as "The Blonde with Bare Breasts" or "Bimboland" - yet another aimless intrigue.

Nota: 5,5

You know what the most tragic thing about this film is? It's that there is a potentially good movie somewhere in here but studio interference got in the way. I wouldn't go as far as to call it "a really bad episode of 24" as the director put it. I mean, the film is bad but I never found myself explicitly comparing it to 24. Seems like he only said that because it was one of Fox's biggest, most popular IPs at the time. I'm sure something closer to his intended vision could've been a new sci-fi masterpiece but it's hampered by a nonsensical plot twist, poorly-edited action sequences and all the actors, no matter how talented they might have proved themselves to be in other projects, struggle to make their lines convincing. The girl that Vin Diesel is escorting being annoying doesn't help. To cut a long story short, this is a mess. One wonders if this ended up being a masterpiece of cinema in a parallel universe where the director's original idea made it to the big screen.

A movie where I was more interested in the world than the characters in the world.

An atrocious mess of paper-thin themes that plod off in a dozen directions and disappear without so much as an over-the-shoulder wink to the viewer. Avoid at all costs.

Fully enjoyable movie. With a grand scale, based on a story touching all the scintillating edges of the spectrum.

worst vin diesel movie he's ever been

Starts out as a job delivering a girl/nun to New York during post apocalyptic world. He finds the girl is more important than he thinks. Has fight and chase scenes.

The lamest attempt at world building I can think of. Devoid of all originality, stiff acting, dreadful fight sequences, and patchwork sci-fi elements that come off as gimmicks rather than genre traits. This is possibly Diesel's worst movie, and given his line of working that's truly saying something.
