Backbeat Reviews

Sep 3, 2022

This was an interesting biopic. Its quite good as a period drama I guess and it features some pretty energetic musical numbers. I certainly enjoyed the live music and the banter between the various characters, although the detective/PI type music played in the background at times was a bit over the top in one scene I felt. I wasn't very familiar with Stuart Sutcliffe, so seeing his life depicted was interesting. I can't say I knew a lot about the early days of the Beatles, so it was interesting from that perspective. The cast do a pretty good job (I was surprised quite how much Gary Bakewell looked like Paul McCartney) and its certainly an entertaining watch, so yes, I'd recommend it.

A well performed and unique look at the lost, would-be Beatle, and the band, as they struggle to make their mark and deal with the fallout of possible misplaced love and expectations. It's not the kind of story you always see with music biopics, and I appreciate it for that.

On the one hand, when I think of the Silver Beatles in Hamburg, I definitely imagine that they sounded like middling mid-90s alt-rock and not, say, "Bésame Mucho" (cha-cha-boom). On the other hand, though, I'm grateful for the epilogue text explaining that the Beatles became the biggest group in the world (since I've been living under a rock rock), that Pete Best "left the group" before Ringo joined, and that John was murdered.

Great film, lacks accuracy but why let the truth get in the way of a good story! Raw energy and great performances throughout and a really top soundtrack that will introduce casual beatles fans to the pure rock and roll of the early years in Hamburg. On a side note, it was because of this film that i had my stag do on the reeperbahn!

A movie that is more about the 5th forgotten Beatle member from the early days, Stuart Sutcliffe.

A really interesting and arty look at the Beatles before they were famous when they were living in Hamburg and performing nightly in a filthy bar on the Reeperbahn. It explores their relationships with some avant-garde Germans as well as within the group.

Two gross inaccuracies in this movie: When they were in Hamburg in the early days, "A Hard Day's Night" didn't exist yet. That song was the result of a Ringo malaprop but Ringo wasn't even in the band yet! Also, Pete Best didn't leave the Beatles, the Beatles left him.

As a huge fan of The Beatles, I really wanted to see Backbeat. This is a good film that gives insight into the bands early years in Hamburg. I only give this flick 3 stars because it goes on too much about Stuart Sutcliffe who isn't that important in the overall story of The Beatles.

Solid performances here, and Softley is good at evoking the period; the music, too, is very well chosen and performed, if not bang on the Beatles' sound. However, the film is understated, too understated. For me, it never gets up enough speed to be all that engaging.

A vivid dramtization of the Beatles experiences in Hamburg, with focus on the love triangle between John Lennon, his friend Stuart Sutcliff and the German photographer Astrid Kirchherr. I'm sure the film deviates a lot from what really happened, but it does bring to life a lot of things that I had read about this period. And it contains some pretty good acting and great recreating of both the times and the music.

A interesting look at The Beatles early career.

Many scenes were artful and some sequences were tastefully done. Somehow, however, I find myself put off by the awkward moments, the many inaccuracies, and the gradual fading of the other Beatles into the background. Stephen Dorff's was great, though, and Ian Hart's Lennon portrayal was pretty convincing.

A average insight on the friendship between Stu Sutcliffe and John Lennon in the early days of the Beatles in Hamburg. The music is good but the film lacks depth and dramatic tension.

An interesting insight into the early years of The Beatles

I'd done a bit of reading prior to watching this, so it was hard not to be distracted by the artistic (though not necessarily significant) liberties Softley took with the facts. It's a fascinating and not often considered part of the Beatles' history, though, and if you don't know the story, well worth a look!

fun stuff, quick paced

A biopic about the Beatle that never was, portrayed with conviction by Stephen Dorff.

An essential for any Beatles fan

Not a lot of attention, but a very solid film, revolving around original Beatle Stuart Sutcliffe.
