Backcountry Reviews
Never been scared of bears until now. I found it gripping. My wife fell asleep.
Predictable, boring, collection of scenes not an engaging movie at all.
Not good. The bear doesn’t make sense and is barely in the movie. If it is man v nature it doesn’t sell the nature conflict. They are slightly hungry and then a bear attacks. If we take the bear then as the main antagonist, or even just the human failure to respect nature, then it should feel more relentless. There is no climax and the only other real character is a weak callback at the end of the movie who meant nothing.
The movie itself is pretty great, as is the acting, score, direction and storyline. Tense throughout up until the very end, and the bear attack scene was quite gruesome and macabre. That being said, the protagonist (the dopey boyfriend) is the most unlikable character imaginable. Aside from being a jealous, irritable yuppy douchebag, he also makes the most asinine decisions as humanly possible., from beginning to end. He intentionally leves behind the cellphone and any means to call for aid. He tells his girlfriend she doesn't need to bring the bear mace. He goes hiking off trail, gets lost in the mountains and pitches a tent adjacent to a bear bed. And then, knowing that a bear is stalking them, he decides to leave his only means of defense (a measly hatchet) by the campfire, right before the attack ensues. The fact that he took his girlfriend camping for days, deep in mountainous bear country without a firearm to defend himself, makes him even more pitiful, pathetic, ignorant and unbearably irritating. As far as 'most hated movie characters' go, this obnoxious idiot sits right up there with Corporal Upham from Saving Private Ryan. So much so, that I found myself actually rooting for the bear to mangle him and rid the film of his utter stupidity. Other then that it was a fantastic and suspenful film! 😁
Watched this without knowing the first thing about it so I thought the Irish guy was going to be the antagonist in the story. Was absolutely unready for what happened, I found it harrowing (not helped by the fact that I had a very lucid and very similar dream a few years ago), could hardly stand to watch parts of it but couldn't possibly not watch. Very atmospheric and, to me, very scary.
Terrible second half to a fairly decent start. Did the writer get bored? Why waste the great tension build up from the uninvited guest, just to leave him absent until the last 10 seconds of the movie? Why waste the tension from the breaking down relationship just to have the guy get eaten? Just because it is supposed to be a true story doesn't mean it is worth a feature length movie. Couple goes hiking, one gets eaten, the other survives....short story at best. 45 minutes of Missy Peredrym stumbling and bleeding through the woods is simply boring. Even the early hint about which side of the falls to climb down doesn't add anything to the monotony of an obvious ending. Good thing the final scene is silent, no dialog could be heard over the groans in the room from a disappointed audience.
Takes an age for anything to happen, and when it does, the camera cuts and shakes about so much you can barely see the long-awaited action.
There is palpable tension throughout the movie beginning between the couple and spreading to each one’s personal fears. Add in an unexpected stranger, a maggot covered deer carcass, bloody socks, and creepy night noises. The terror of the bear is gut wrenching. Really good horror movie not supernatural or murderous. Only wish the end could have been taken to what happened next.
A lazy, boring, pointless, anticlimactic attempt to replicate the structure of Blair Witch and The Revenant while falling utterly short of both. Worse, this film claims to be based on true events, despite changing every aspect of the characters and events it is based on. Do yourself a favour and read about the true story of Mark Jordan and Jacqueline Perry, even YouTube video essays do a better job at conveying the events than this film does, while also being far more entertaining. Utterly terrible.
Wow....this movie is gripping and also terrifying. Not a big budget endeavor which somehow makes the movie more believable and raw. Great script and acting set against the back drop of what should have been a thoughtful and heartfelt outdoor proposal in a place which had sentimental meaning to this couple. Extremely realistic, unexpected scenario, coupled with the fight for survival which will keep you on the edge of your seat. Great flick, not for kids.
A standard survivor movie where a couple gets lost in the woods and must find a way to civilization in order to survive.
Keeps you at the edge of your seat. Might not have the high class budget but it was just as enjoyable due to good acting and great thriller script that makes you think twice on backpacking without being ready.
Worst movie I have ever seen. The characters are terrible. The plot is terrible. The music sucked. The only thing I liked was the bear, and he was only in it for 10 minutes.
A very good movie. The third act is crazy good. Overall a worth while watch. Tim Treakle
Spoiler Alert. Predictable ending since the backpacking weekend camping (at the boyfriend’s favorite park ) meets with danger when he takes the wrong turn into the wilderness. He did not take a map, a decent weapon, mark their trail, and left the girlfriend’s cell phone purposely in the car. He also does not hire a guide. Totally unbelievable stupidity in the wilderness when after getting lost, the boyfriend leaves the food pack close and in reach of bears even when they stumble upon dead prey and see huge footprints. They don’t even leave the fire burning at night to stave off predators and manage to just go to sleep in a flimsy tent and wonder out loud what their fate will be.
This movie is too good for words.
The perfect example of what NOT to do while camping. As someone who is a former park worker, I was frustrated beyond belief during this film, but realistically this happens to people more often than I’d like. I will say that the speed and violence of the attacks are spot on, bears will eat prey alive. Film wise, I’m not a fan of super close up blurry shots. It’s a solid watch, but I probably wouldn’t watch it again.
Do not waste your time, watch It and keep skipping 10secs every 5secs to save time as nothing happens for the majority of the movie
The plot armor this girl has is crazy
