Backtrack Reviews
Backtrack, whatever it cost, feels costly, bloated, crammed with screaming CG ghosties that pop out at the screen screaming when the director needs to goose us
| Jul 2, 2021
Backtrack plays as a tightly-wound drama working through themes of redemption and forgiveness. While it follows familiar genre beats, the work being done here is thoroughly engaging.

Adrien Brody puts in a reliably earnest performance, but it's not enough to save an idea that remains in need of fleshing.

Peter's story is entrancing, and Brody's performance absolutely convinces you of his emotional turmoil.

Schlock it may be, and sticklers will complain about plot holes, but there's no denying the mood of dread conjured up here, nor the strength of the performances.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Sep 27, 2017
It does spend an awfully long time idling in the sidings.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Jan 2, 2017
Brody fills out his wafer-thin role with more conviction than it truly deserves, and like fellow former Best Actor Oscar-winner Nicolas Cage, is an expert at keeping a straight face in bent circumstances.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Jun 15, 2016
Backtrack has a classy, downcast aesthetic that feels a bit like an old piece of furniture melted down and turned into celluloid, or a film infused with the fabric of a chesterfield.

...all very silly and over the top...
| Original Score: 12/20 | Jun 14, 2016
It's a decent story, but the film suffers from the muddling effect of ghost story mixed with thriller.
| Jun 14, 2016
Never mind that it is derivative, it is the lack of engagement in the film's first half that is its greatest problem as it struggles to straddle genres from that of the supernatural to thriller.

The script from writer/director Michael Petroni is so ruthlessly focused on planting symbols and advancing menacing clues that the protagonist's journey into his own past begins to feel pre-ordained.
| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Jun 12, 2016
Backtrack starts promisingly but becomes wildly improbable as it proceeds.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Jun 10, 2016
The build-up may be uncharacteristically slow in this day and age, but it's well worth the wait.
| Original Score: 3.5/5 | May 31, 2016
A movie about guilt, a thriller, a horror film, a ghost story and a drama, it's a mix of genres that never really quite fit together. [Full review in Spanish]

[Backtrack is] saddled with an overworked air of mystery that turns into vagueness and a little too much of a sullen atmosphere for its own good.
| Original Score: 2/5 | May 2, 2016
After a promising beginning, the film ends up being a bad copy of The Sixth Sense and The Others. [Full review in Spanish]

Seems like writer/director Michael Petroni never really understood how the film he references actually work. [Full review in Spanish]

The script is never clear about what motivates the main character and the director never really makes us feel his angst. [Full review in Spanish]
