Basic Reviews
Horrendous casting and acting. Giovanni Ribis as some effeminate lost rich kid whose powerful father got him into Rangers training to hopefully fail or even be killed? The tiny tough latina who somehow can make it with the rest of the boys in an elite army training school. Travolta with his dumb ass face and sarcasm and cockiness that he brought to every movie in the years after getting his career revitalized in Pulp Fiction. All he needs to do is roll up his sleeve to show his Rangers tattoo and now he's believable. Suspension of disbelief is one thing but I'd have to be living in an alternate timeline to believe any of this for long enough to be entertained and get through my popcorn and soda.
Just terrible! Highly do not recommend
When there are too many twists you sort of expect the next one and get it right. That's what is wrong with this one.
So assistindo. Vale apena assistir? Com certeza. Nota: 8
I do like criminal mysteries...army stle; the General's Daughter; is another winner there. This is a gem that might take you tumbling into the heart of 'what DID happen?'; that should perhaps be best summed up by the prisoner's innocuous 'who cares what happened there? It's how you tell the story that matters' Something like that For me, the lingering question remains: was John Travolta's character undercover at thr beginning of the movie 🤔
While twists pleasantly struck unsuspecting viewers then refine the film's watchability by sharpened focus, becoming a praiseworthy effective impact giving the affected picture another level unveiled, this ironically-titled film overdid to the point of losing its footing. Stars a nice cast amid exceptional production merits for effective momentum, the many unfolding twists it contains scrunches in convolution whilst remain engaged till you feel both grips loosen when facing "clever" indecision. (B-)
Billed at the time as the return of John McTiernan (of Die Hard and Predator fame) and the reunion of John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson. There was even a piece on how Travolta (specifically) had gotten in great shape for his role. And what was the result? Honestly, at the time, I wasn't impressed. Sure, it was an alluring, military noir, set on a perpetually rain-soaked military base as an military investigator tried to uncover a mystery with multiple points of view and twists abound. But something about the movie felt, lacking. At. That. Time. But watching the film today, I have a deeper appreciation for the storytelling and the classic Rashomon multiple point of view troupe. Plus, Samuel L. Jackson and John Travolta are absolutely amazing together even if they hardly share any screen time.
Travolta with another stinker
The screenplay starts off alright, promising a "Rashomon" type narrative, but it delivers a series of outrageous twists instead.
Essentially, BASIC is a good story with a screenplay that isn't because includes too many twists too fast. I'd need to watch it again to make sense of it. And, most of the characters showing up in the final scene to explain what the audience was supposed to see pretty much confirms that it wasn't me that wasn't making sense of things. Some of the other reviews are similar to my take on it.
Don't expect any grand show of excellent character development or an easy to follow plot. The movie is all over the place with the he said/he said, but this movie is basically Clue in the jungle with GIs. Is it riveting? No. Is it a movie with a lot of depth and intended to teach you anything? Absolutely not. But, it's got some pretty great actors in Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson, and if you can get over the dizzying loops, name changes, and points of view, it's enjoyable and does what it intends: entertains. Worth one watch and the ability to say you've seen it.
Overblown ridiculous nonsense that get worse with every passing minute.
Too many plot twist! There is a good movie in here somewhere, but I just can't put my finger on where it is. It's probably hidden behind a plot twist.
Basic's problem is that there's too much going on but not enough at the same time. The movie jumps between the past and the present to reveal what happened, but as the story gets twisted and the plot unfolds, the viewer loses interest and no longer cares to find out.
I think I have to watch it again to see if it actually makes sense.
Lives up to its name but is quite entertaining.
Coulda been 4 star without a scene silly scenes and a few terrible supporting actors 3.7
Quite "standard". Nothing much to say about it. Typical movie to watch if you have nothing better to do.
A movie that tried to be more complicated then it needed to be.
Long winding lack of seasoning military drama that you may fall asleep on first watch with onfusing consipiracy junky twist plot mess. The only credit it was a brief one, this tells you much; why even bother?
