Beautiful Thing Reviews
An urban fairytale. Beautiful Thing is a 1996 British romantic comedy film directed by Hettie MacDonald 🪩 It’s ok, but I feel mixed about this one 😉 I’d recommend it if you like this genre, but if not then probably give it a miss 👍🏼👎🏼 S Set during a long, hot summer on the Thamesmead Estate in Southeast London, three teenagers edge towards adulthood.
“…cos it’s got a bloody great pink neon arse outside of it!”
I don't know how I missed this film. For 25 years I've heard it is lovely. I heard a podcast with the writer and he was so charming I bought it immediately and I must say I love it. I did miss some dialog because of the strong accents but that wasn't important. I love a gay themed movie that does not end with tragedy.
I found this a surprisingly sweet film, mainly focussing on companionship as well as sexuality but it doesn't feature any graphic sexual content. However, there is quite a lot of strong language and some sex references. There were some fairly amusing moments too but I'd say the topics were dealt with quite well. I thought this was a pretty decent, understated British film thats worth a watch, if only for the 90s nostalgia and/or for the music played, such as 'Dream A Little Dream of Me' by The Mamas and the Papas and numerous tracks by 'Mama Cass', Cass Elliot, like 'Make Your Own Kind of Music'.
This is one of those mystifying selections by Netflix DVD where they pull something from way, way down in my queue. They, unfortunately, seem to be doing that more and more frequently. In any case, back to this film … It is reasonably well-ranked on internet sites (e.g., Rotten Tomatoes, IMDB). I'm not sure why. I found the story telling pretty slow. The ending was nice and redeemed the story a little, but not enough. Oh well, you win some …
Simply the finest "gay" movie ever. How refreshing to see a film with this subject matter AND a positive ending. The characters are so engaging that one wonders what happens to them after the film is over. We hope it's as positive as the outcome of the story. Wonderful performances all around with great use of the music of Mama Cass Elliot. Heads and shoulders above just about every American film on the subject.
The most beautiful, non-cheesy-at-all, coming-of-age queer cinema ever. And the soundtrack is just perfect.
Beautiful Thing is superbly scripted, excellent performance, excellent love story that touched my heart. This is one of those happy ending films that turned out a masterpiece. I reccomand it if your into love stories. Love has no Gender!!
An unusually realistic British comedy about the teenage love between the shy Jamie and troubled Ste, they also need to deal with Jamie's nosy mum and their dysfunctional neighbour. It's really cute and natural which is why I really like the film. It was also really hilarious, but it was kinda sad to see the state of London in the 90s.
Don't let the thick British accents drive you away. "Beautiful Thing" is one of the best gay love stories I've seen in a long time. The movie has the sincere ability to make you smile. Sure, it's not the most well-made film. But the movie is made up on its incredible depth, its sense of humor, a genuine romance (thanks to screenwriter Jonathan Harvey, who adapted his own play), and some terrific acting from the whole ensemble.
I'm going to hold off on providing a higher rating for this film which probably deserves it solely for the touching nature of the two leads and how they interact with one another. What loses the film points is unlikelihood of the eventual acceptance of the couple and a plodding side story that adds nothing to the central picture other than minutes.
Excellently acted by the lead performers in this delightful little gem. Their contributiond outshone that of the supporting cast which was not of the same standard. Ending scene though sweet was highly improbable and a bit of disconnect from the rest of the film. Sometimes this movie did not flow as well as it could have and there are inconsistencies ... but still it is a very endearing film, well acted and worth seeing.
Sweet and touching still not a great example of good film-making.Some good performances, both leads did a great job,Henry giving her best, but it lacked plot-wise.A sweet,coming-of-age movie,in a most dysfunctional setting.
This is a very warm hearted film with well-drawn characters backed by solid acting. It deserves its reputation as a classic of queer cinema.
A Truly Beautiful Thing to watch. The whole film is fantastic, for all areas, the hard-working, loving, caring single mother, the shy, nervous, unsure child, the popular but insecure, frightened, abused boy, the crazy neighbours, everything! The film has some amazing scenes in it, especially the scene in the woods with the music - makes me cry and smile every time, the two young lovers are just wrapped up in themselves with no care in the world and it really shows through the acting and reactions of the actors, who obviously have such chemistry about them - and the music as well was fabulous and so poignant. This is probably my second ranking film of this genre (possible my second favourite in all) the first goes to Get Real that applied more to me than this film did, though the film affected me in a similar way to Get Real. Get Real changed my life, Beautiful Thing helped it along. I give this film a very good 10/10
