The script captures the edges of the internal drama within each character without asking them to say everything out loud... It's such a female way of communicating that it gives the film a whole other facet, adding depth to a tub of predictable...

Good performances, whimsical dialogue, and funny moments make this a memorable visit to the cinema.

They turn a potentially complex family journey into silly farce and still expect you to care.

Some films need to be seen, not for their polish but for their practice. Before You Know It is one of those films that had promise and that delivers on some of that promise.

A lean piece of entertainment and an exceptional calling card for Utt - and Tullock, whose contributions shouldn't be overlooked.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Oct 6, 2019
The end results aren't earth-shaking, but there's a good deal of talent on display.

Mandy Patinkin plays a role well suited to his musical theatrical background and reputation.

Before You Know It is seasonably appropriate comfort food for intelligent adult audiences; something that's always in short supply.
| Original Score: 7/10 | Sep 20, 2019
The film's major asset is its warmth; the characters have their issues, but they are people you can connect with and - in most cases - become emotionally invested.
| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Sep 19, 2019
The dialogue is clever and the premise witty. It's a New York-y film that has the zip of a farce, without all the nuttiness. (There's a little nuttiness.)
| Original Score: 3/4 | Sep 18, 2019
There are agreeable moments in the movie, but they're sporadic and fleeting, and the shifts between dramedy and broad farce are jarring.
| Original Score: C | Sep 17, 2019
A charming and quirky New York tale, if a bit disorganized, finding its voice when it quiets down to just listen to the three women at the center of the story.

"Before You Know It" isn't without its moments, but it could have used more of them. Sometimes it's a slog.
| Original Score: 2/4 | Sep 12, 2019
The performances are all top notch.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Sep 10, 2019
Before You Know It feels like it fell out of the mid-Eighties -- and that's not a bad thing. In the tradition of Mystic Pizza or Moscow on the Hudson, it finds its humor in the light and shade of its characters, with the odd broader gag.
| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Sep 5, 2019
Utt's charming, self-deprecating ensemble is an effortless screwball throwback that loves its characters no matter their flaws.

"Before You Know It" isn't a deep movie, or a hilarious one, and Utt and Tullock probably don't expect it to be. But it is, in its undemanding, almost effortless way, warm and wise and watchable enough to be just this side of wonderful.

[Hannah Pearl Utt] has a deft hand as a director here, as well as an actress.

Sprawling with too many sub-plots to sink your teeth into its main theme of overcoming dark family secrets.
