Belle Reviews
Amazing story of Dido Elizabeth Belle
The movie had great actors and actresses and did an excellent job of covering a tough subject. I was surprised how quickly time passed while watching it. It definitely keeps your interest.
Brilliant movie have never seen something so marvellous
Oh, I love this movie! It's a wonderful history and love story that's based on a true story. Watch this. You will not be disappointed. Highly recommended!!
Has a historian I really like this movie with a great cast and an epic movie and a movie that is quit accurate historical and isn't timed to use words like Mulatto or Negro. A movie in the quality of The Patriot with Mel Gibson or even better. Those movies are about the same time and the same king George III of Great Britain and Hanover. This movie is how a movie should be historical portratated without wokeness or political correctness. Negro and Mulatto are just right words to use. Next the movie doesn't really preach and the love between John and Belle is great. Nice that the movie shows black people in the mainland britain in the 18th century, without being slaves! Nice tough. This black director did a great job, as did her writer to give an accurate image of a time. Without being to much busy with politics or act like victems of the caucassian race.
An Absolutely fantastic movie. An excellent portrayal of Historical views and politics. A wonderful love story of combining two worlds, an accurate depiction of love and acceptance of different backgrounds.
The story is better than the execution.
Belle is an amazing film. It is about the biracial daughter of a royal navy captain who is raised by an aristocratic great-uncle. Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Matthew Goode give fantastic performances. The script is well written. Amma Asante did a great job directing this movie. I enjoyed watching this motion picture because of the drama and romance. Belle is a must see.
Plays more like a tepid, Brazilian telenovela soap opera, less of a British drama, period piece about the abolishment of slavery. Not helping is the lead actress "vacuous" performance, made for a tedious, boring viewing experience.
The visuals are pretty. The characters are one sided and the plot is wushu washy. The music is good, but it can't carry the story.
Amma Asante's gorgeous period piece follows Belle (a brilliant Gugu Mbatha-Raw) an illegitimate mixed race daughter of a Navy Admiral, raised in the house of her great uncle. A brilliant cast including Tom Wilkinson and Emily Watson accompany a funny, warm, and factual script, and Belle really put Asante on the map, meaning she was able to follow it up with the equally excellent A United Kingdom (2016).
Beautiful story, costumes & acting. Clever way of looking at the past and principles.
This movie dragged for most of its length. The characters are very flat, as is the acting by the lead.
This is a must-see. One of the reasons why I love films is that they show us important stories that must be heard, like this one for example. The sceneries are very beautiful too
One of my favorite movies!! I love Belle!! and John's expression of love for Dido is not my standard
Although the movie had excellent acting, what stopped me from giving the film a higher rating was the fact that Belle, or Dido as she is referred in the film, had no such a role in the real life events that played out in the film. This is supposedly a work of historical fiction and not of alternate history, and so when making a historical fiction piece, the main plot shouldn't be based around a nearly fictitious character. This makes the film feel unreal and fake as if it were just a standard piece of fiction. As a standard fictional film, I'd say that it was okay and it had some nice moments, but as a historical fiction or more accurately alternate history, this film falls short and could be a lot more creative.
"Belle" is brilliantly well-written and well-acted yet stiff with its theme. However, Asante herself took this drama period in a conventional way and to a different level. It takes the whole thing to say like this is a movie about a person. The set perfectly crafted, the gesture, the accent, the performance, everything in this movie is bearable. Not tightly bound by its execution but still tells what this movie is.
Lead actress was very pretty and pouty but her 'acting' was outshone by the rest of the cast. Definitely not a nuanced performance. The film plot is is pure fiction. While Dido did exist would have made a great film subject, this account is pure tosh. It is a very pretty and engaging historical romance in lovely setting with a great complex performance by Tom Wilkinson. which raises the film's anti slavery sub plot and predictable script to another level. Just don't go in expecting actual history and lower your expectations of the acting chops of the female lead Gugu Mbatha-Raw, which are mightily overblown in most reviews, and you will enjoy it.
