Berlin Syndrome Reviews
Its a good movie. Mostly gets you off your feet. But as always thriller movies always hasthat part that needs to be solved. 8 for me.
Audiences claim this hits a lot of different notes compared with others, yet it’s the realism that brings the audience engaged here. That’s what movies lack nowadays because there’s too great a need for CGI and luxurious viewings. And so, viewers were drawn to this, intrigued. Happy because although the movie doesn’t deliver edge of the seat stuff, it successfully lured you in. Just like the German man did… only this female lead character didn’t seem to care that there wasn’t any worthy build up, seemed like she was just feeling like getting undressed with a random guy. Now then issues with this movie, well firstly, the acting is weak in the first act (first part to them that don’t know) and the dialogue isn’t good. Also, this is meant to be Berlin right. So use what Berlin has to offer which is a lot more beautiful than what we got shown. Then am I meant to be seeing onscreen chemistry between the two and be seeing a charming man here? Because I didn’t see that. I saw dodgy acting such as basic flirty facial expressions like lip biting from the lead, awkwardness and dodgy accents. She doesn’t know German you say? Well she seems to do well she knows a lot of words. Unusually so for someone who doesn’t know the German culture. And why’s she always on the move with her back pack… there also wasn’t much in the way of a build up between the two leads, nothing he or she said seemed charming or anything, it was as if it was a bit of a rush to show off the romantic scene and hurry to the lunatic apartment. These types of films have been done before. Room for instance and sorry to say were done better. And so Shortland's film sits somewhere in the middle of that type of spectrum.
Kept me glued to the screen. It can be slow at times but the acting is good and there are some tense scenes. Worth a watch 7/10
88% very tense the dialogue not the greatest but very tense makes you on edge through out andi is not developed as much that he should of been the score is amazing and how it’s filmed is really good that’s what makes it so intense
Absolutely boring af and I love Teresa Palmer.
This was fantastic. I was entertained throughout the entire film.
A claustropobic, abduction movie that could do with a slightly quicker tempo.
While it doesn't really offer much that is new to the whole captor and captive narrative, Berlin Syndrome works primarily because of the borderline-artsy direction from Cate Shortland and another committed performance from the always reliable Teresa Palmer. In the movie, a young Australian woman (Palmer) travelling in Berlin finds herself engaged in a one-night stand with a seemingly charming school teacher (Max Riemelt), only to find herself trapped in the unit of an abandoned apartment block the following day. It does become a bit of a repetitive slog for a few scenes at the midway point, but the atmosphere is ominous throughout, raising Berlin Syndrome a notch above others in the genre. More than anything else, the movie begs the following question: why is Teresa Palmer not a bigger star than she is?
What the hell is wrong with German people? I'll give it a couple of stars on account of the filmmakers do seem to have talent, and the film is grossly compelling in a car wreck gawker sort of way. But seriously, as I get older, I have less tolerance for this kind of stuff.
This film seriously creeped me out! The tension, the pace, the acting. Amazing
Had me glued to the screen from start to finish. Incredible acting on behalf of Theresa Palmer. Had me feeling a spectrum of emotions from anguish to hope to sympathy and repulsion.
I liked this one a lot. It is at times almost surreal feeling as it portrays the life of a woman held in captivity. While she is at all times desperate for escape, she also acknowledges her twisted form of dependence on her captor as time goes on. Berlin Syndrome's sense of time is brilliant (especially now with the pandemic in mind) as it seems to move like any other movie, but clearly the timeline takes place over many months as the seasons change. Time is simultaneously moving, and moving fast, but we feel stuck in place. The finale was incredibly tense and the movie did a great job of keeping me invested in nearly its entire 2 hours especially considering this may have been better off as a 90 minute story.
"What would be the worst thing that I could ever do to you?" Although the actual storyline of her seeming to accept being prisoner is a new take on this genre. The girl was the classic ‘little bird' type and the guy was the classic "creepy predator" with dark & dangerous obsessions (done it before to other girls). There were a few plot holes, mainly the one where she could have easily cut down the door while he's at work. Still, the ending was hopeful which is always very much appreciated. I would watch again.
Pretty crappy. Boring. Skip!!
well-written dialogue believable characters but there was no climax. It started, stayed on a consistent level, and ended. The side plot with his parents was obviously only to flesh his character out and in no way influenced the plot.
Creepy in all the right ways. A real horror film without the gore. You'll never want to have a one night stand again ;)
Not great, but compelling to watch, after a bit of a slow start. The ending was good because it was unpredictable. I don't know that I'd recommend it, but it was okay and I'll not complain. I've seen much worse. Actually, I've not seen a whole lot worse, because I wouldn't have watched anything worse to the end.
This movie was okay. The one thing that bothered me is that the main character makes the stupidest choices ever. You could tell exactly what was going to happen when she let a random man see where she lived and basically told him she was all alone in a foreign country and had no friends and no one who would check up on her. She hardly even tried to escape, basically half-assing all her attempts and although the end was sort of happy, I felt like it wasn't enough for the things she had suffered through. The only reason I sat through the entire thing was because Max Riemelt was in it.
