Black as Night Reviews
Black As Night delivers a solid vampire tale with a bit of an emotional story to add more heart. You’ll catch a few genre references to the vampire icons that have come before, but the film does a great job of carving its own spot.

[It] uses racism and colorism as punchlines in ways that aren't very funny and end up being grating in how these jokes are repeated. It's an awful horror movie that thinks it's being clever, when it actually dumbs everything down for the audience.

You can predict some of the beats that follow, but Night is fun enough, with good messaging about self-image.

Apart from its clichéd, electronic-belch sound cues, Black as Night is a solid entry in the Blumhouse catalog of midnight movies.

The actors don't get the opportunity to really build out these characters or to explore the coming-of-age touches in Shawna's story.

With a high kill-rate of vampires and a high degree of silliness--it still sucks.

[A] surprisingly fresh take on the old vampire genre.

This is an earnest, if clunky, coming-of-age vampire movie.

What makes Black as Night special is that it takes all of those complex and nuanced themes and competently rolls them into a modern vampire story.

There is a good movie lurking somewhere within Black As Night, but as it stands now, it is distinctly lacking in bite.

This could've been more fun. The story and script were not as strong as I was hoping.

Black As Night is assembled in an uninspired YA style that only accentuates the weaknesses of its script, which is laden with stilted dialogue and cringeworthy voiceover.

The Blumhouse release examines power structures with lots of fun scares.
| Original Score: 3.5/4 | Oct 8, 2021
Totally watchable with easy-to-like characters, the mildest of scares, and a bit of message tucked into the fun.

Black as Night is an enjoyably pulpy, but flawed genre outing. Its deployment of social commentary puts an engaging twist on a familiar premise, but a scatter-brained execution sours the taste.

So the writing is smart - smarter than most of its ilk, even. But its execution leaves much to be desired.

Maybe this is just the first genre film of the Biden era - a whimper in the face of institutional violence that thinks petitions are a better idea than abolishing the filibuster.

Its weakest parts also show enough sloppiness that it becomes clear why this is debuting on Amazon rather than on the big screen.

The budget was clearly microscopic ... , but the filmmakers manage to pull something together that looks solid, features worthy acting, and doesn't forget to be fun and scary at the same time.
| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Oct 4, 2021
Though it has some rough edges, its talented cast and themes make this film an engaging watch.
