Blood Reviews

Jun 7, 2021

Very good movie! A tense psychological thriller that blurred the line of good and evil !

Slow, tedious, dark, boring. Don't waste your time

Gets a little overly dramatic at the end. Good performances from the cast though.

Masterfully directed and skillfully acted. Blood diverted from the cliche crime thrillers with its adequate plot line and extreme thrill.

Rather than being another crime thriller about self destruction by guilt, Blood is fresh and intriguing thanks to its leads, directing, and pleasant cinematography.

In "Blood," Joe(Paul Bettany) and Chrissie(Stephen Graham) Fairburn are the sons of a cop, Lenny(Brian Cox), who still shows up at the precinct house from time to time. So, of course it figures they would become police detectives themselves. Their latest case involves the brutal murder of a young girl. They think they have a suspect in Jason Buliegh(Ben Crompton) who certainly seems sleazy enough but they do not have enough evidence to hold him. So, Joe and Chrissie decide to take Jason to the islands in order to have a further chat with him. "Blood" has certain things going for it like a moody atmosphere and a neat use of locations. On the other hand, it is definitely lacking in the story department. So much so, that it solves its central mystery not once but twice before conveniently forgetting about it. Yes, there is a twist but in the long term that does not really change anything. And then there is the miscasting in central roles which undermines any dramatic exploration of the central relationships. What does work is the scene when Lenny is introduced in the foreground, in front of and interrupting his son Joe.

For a film with such quality actors and a name brand director in the form of Sam Mendes as producer it's hard to gage just why Blood was released with such little fanfare but then again upon watching of the film it's hard to promote it as a must see when in reality it's a film that whilst having good central performances is just too generic to fully buy into. Adapted from the British mini series titled Conviction, Blood has a plot that is all too familiar for anyone who has but a passing interest in the family/crime genre of movies. In the role of brothers and cops the film has its strongest points with Paul Bettany in a rare leading role and Stephan Graham in another top supporting turn doing well with their respective characters Joe and Chrissie. It's always good to see Bettany on screen and for an actor that chooses a wide range of shoddy roles it's a welcome return here to see him display a range of emotions. Stephan Graham in my opinion one of the most talented and watchable actors working today with his work on HBO's Boardwalk Empire and roles in feature films such as This is England showcasing his startling talents and again here comes away with the films best moments in a film that needed more of them. One of Blood's major problems is in its setting up of the story and subsequent lack of feelings after it due to a rushed and frankly over the top scenario that would of worked better if the film spent more time establishing the bond between the brothers, there iffy relationship with fellow cop Robert (thank goodness Strong is not a bad guy!) and the trials they are experiencing with their ex-cop dad Lenny (Cox). It all plays along nicely enough but you never get the sense your witnessing anything feature film worthy thanks to Murphy's bland direction and dull set ups. If you're a fan of Bettany and Graham Blood is a film worthy of your time to see the fine actors ply their trade side by side but for anyone else Blood is nothing more than a sadly predictable and safe movie that really should have been a lot more memorable. 2 and a half bacon sandwiches out of 5 For more movie reviews and opinions check out - www.jordanandeddie.wordpress.com

A lesson in self-destruction. It's by no means the most complex of police stories, but it's very well shot and there's a fine mood created for the drama.

good gritty crime drama from the UK

Saw a trailer for this and it looked pretty good...good story, well-made, dark. Then saw it had low ratings and couldn't figure it out. Until I watched it. Indeed, a great plot: detectives can't get a confession out of a murder suspect and things get out of hand and they kill him and have to deal with it. But it's just not done so well. It's never really believable. Girl is dead. Suspect has a history, they search his home and find an earring, pics, etc. I'm not going to spoil it but it's all downhill from there. So many open endings to allow the drama to build, but they're not real-to-life open endings so I just couldn't get involved with the story or characters. On top of that, you have to investigators who really, really go about things the wrong way once they've committed a crime. It's silliness. The big plus of the movie is the visuals. You have a violent, somewhat realistic death, and it's just a dark and pretty movie to look at.

Basic Cop / Brother Drama...

Sep 24, 2014

labeled as a cop thriller is more family drama oriented then it is cops. held together by the performances by Bethany and expecially Graham the story seems to bring you to an intense moment to leave you hanging for a long time before anything else happens. not a bad little movie but not the best one either.

Good cast but not great story

Jun 21, 2014

Weirdly paced with even weirder dialoges. It's an interesting movie with a compelling story and good performances that glue the whole thing together. However, it feels a little too much like peering into a dark room. You get what's happening right there before the eye but there's a lack of depth and backstory that makes it hard to empathize with anyone on screen.

Peu de développement dans les personnages et scénario sans substance

Blood an adult British Thriller that is based on cops that go after a child killer and cannot pin the crimes on the bad guy straight a way and take the law into their own hands and end up getting the confession out of him and killing the bad guy at the same time. Then the story takes the turn that the good cops still on the case are still searching to find out what happen and the crooked cops try to cover their tracks. A slow British Who done it Murder Mystery. If you like your British Mysteries then this is for you. It slow and takes its time but i have to say ninety minutes is long enough for this flick. It kinda reminded me of Mystic River a movie very simillar to that movie. The cast is a good British cast does not have much action more like reading a novel with moving parts. Not suitable for the kiddies.

I give it credit for some decent concept, but if ever a film could shoot itself in the foot with a shotgun, this was it. The ending, the scenes of the younger brother crisis and the momentum just collapsed on scenes that just were not supposed to be there and forced the audience to fall back in incomprehension.

The moody, sweeping cinematography serves to augment buildup of anguish in this Irish thriller.

A very by the numbers kind of movie but the acting is very good.
