Blood Simple Reviews

May 15, 2025

Coen's first movie is impressive, compelling, and a bit trashy. Fine performances, nice plot twists, kept me on my toes. As major misunderstandings of the truth, totally screws with the character's poor decision making. Coens show lots of style with fancy camerabatics. An eerie music score helps underscore all the mayhem.

Absolutely outstanding dark comedy-drama independent film ever.

This movie was absolutely crazy. Marty still being alive after bleeding out for so long blew my mind. I’m not gonna say much, but I do think we need more cinema like this. This was great, and had a surprisingly nice soundtrack for such a lot budget feature. 4/5 stars.

It was cool to see the Coen Brothers earliest film. I thought it was kind of cheesy. It was nice that they showed Texas. There was a lot of violence in this movie. A few twists.

Not my type of movie but still good

I didn’t enjoy it; slow and unengaging I’ve hardly liked anything by the Cohen Brothers The only one I’ve actually liked is O Brother Where Art Thou?

I liked this movie just as much as Fargo! I didn't know that the Coen brothers made movies in the mid/early 1980s. This film's runtime isn't that long but so much happens within a span of a few minutes. It was quite suspenseful and dramatic with its scenes and what happened between and to each character involved in the plot's murder scandal. I wanted to watch this movie after Roger Avery and Quentin Tarantino went in Joe Rogan and after the way they spoke about it, I knew it was very likely something special! Why can't they make simple and genuine movies like these ones anymore? I would recommend it!

Excellent first movie by Coens. Low budget shows.

Built on the jealousy of a husband losing his wife (McDormand) to another lover, Blood Simple should be a boiling rage of a movie. But it's slow and cheesed up by Emmet Walsh.

The Coen's best was also their first. A film that's beautifully shot in blue and neon lighting that is simply a treat to the eyes and one of the defining neo noirs of the 80s. Well crafted in a way where we are the only ones that know the full picture of what's happening, with the highlight being the quite long section in the middle that doesn't contain a single line of dialogue. Blood Simple remains the best film that the Coen Brothers ever made

The 'feel' of a Coen brother movie is there from the start. It's effortlessly and engagingly enigmatic.

You would think being this is the first Coen Brothers effort that it would be a bit raw and lacking their distinct style as they have yet to find who they are, and to an extent this is exactly that. However, this is still an All Time Classic because of how sharp everything is. Even though the humor is very little here and in fact if I didn't know this was a Coen Brothers movie I would never really catch on this was them. This lacks the quirky zany characters, tone, and humor of their latter efforts, but man this is really a testament to their talent on a raw level. They were better than 90% of established directors back in the 80's even with this effort. The cinematography is so moody and atmospheric. It has almost a John Carpenter B Movie look to it. A true testament to the storytelling is the 20 minutes run in the middle his has with Getz's character where there is no dialouge and you can still follow it perfectly. Masterful visual storytelling. The only real weak spot is the acting is really good but it's not amazing. The chemistry between the two leads is good but it's not amazing but they have great individual prescene. Emmet Walsh is amazing in this and by far the best actor. His veteran prescnce really helps. Everything else is masterful despite lacking the Coen brothers style save for money being a McCuffin, and loving Noir style plots. This is a masterful crime thriller that everyone should check out.

A masterpiece of sheer subtlety and restraint, the Coen brothers' debut film is a refreshing original take on a seemingly simple story. They have managed to turn a tale of a sleazy bar owner, a cheating wife, and a bumbling private detective into a complex web of unnecessary complications, showcasing their unique ability to add unexpected depth to a plot.

This was the only one of their films I'd never seen. No surprise, though. The brothers demonstrated their brilliance right from the start.

Cool old movie. It's def. Worth watching.

Overrated. I get it that it's Coen brothers, Frances McDormand, and the guy the Fly vomited on. Onbe of the sparest scripts I can ever imagine. ten minutes of screen time in silence. To me, it's a run of the mill kill your horrible husband movie. The acting is meh. The directing is meh. The lighting, everything is just, meh. 96% Tomato rating? Nonsense.

This strange movie is the Coen brother’s first project, so even though it’s not great, I’ll cut them some slack. It has its moments but I was bored a lot.

This skillful low budget film shows you why the Coens earned the trust of the studios and their lasting success.

There's a reason why this film is a cult classic. Simple but efficient, a great opera prima from the Coens

Almost perfect storytelling. Los Bros Coen hit the ground running. M. Emmet Walsh at his best, this rewatch camer a few days before his death.
