The Bonfire of the Vanities Reviews

Mar 25, 2025

Even with an all Star lineup of stars couldn't hold up this movie from eventually sinking. The satire was good but the comedy was hit and mostly miss. Tim Treakle

As a journalist for almost 30 years this movie hits painfully close to the mark...this is how it actually works. A brilliant effort by DePalma, one of his best works

Discombobulating adaptation of an 80's best-selling novel. The magnanimous cast and Brian De Palma make this fascinating thematic bonfire of sorts watchable but it is still an ambitious...

I used to watch this film on VHS when I was in my early teenage years...An all star cast...Hanks, Willis, Griffith, Cattral even Morgan Freeman & yet they were horrible, some scenes made me laugh but still it's a disaster. 1 of the worst movies I've ever seen.

Worst movie I've ever TRIED to watch; tried 5x and couldn't get through the first part and then fell asleep. 5x

Excellent movie. Great dialogue, excellent acting and very well directed.

Bloated, facile, mostly lifeless satire that takes forever to get going and doesn't have much to say once it gets there. Actors are either miscast (Hanks), misused (Willis), or shamelessly cartoonish (Griffith).

Apparently if you read the book, you hate this film. If you saw this film when it came out, you also hate this film. I did neither, and it seemed to me smart, incisive, witty, shrewd, funny, well-acted and a provocative story that's quite relevant today.

I know that it's absurd, in poor taste, and was considered a disaster even it first came out, but I was thoroughly entertained. Tom Hanks is excellent and Melanie Griffith is brilliant.

This could have been a great movie. Maybe the Tom Wolfe story wasn't "politically correct" in the ways that Hollywood wanted. The movie pulled its punches and the audience was cheated. Read the book for some great political and social commentary that's still relevant in the 21st century.

I first watched Brain DePalma's The Bonfire of the Vanities when it was released theatrically and hated it. This may have been poor judgement because I had compared it to Tom Wolfe's classic satire novel of the same name, which I had loved. Since any movie should be judged on its own merit, as opposed to how it stacks up against the source material, I decided to give it another shot some 30 years later. On second viewing, I found that the movie still stinks. On the positive side, the opening shot with Bruce Willis is beautifully executed and Morgan Freeman is wonderful as the trial judge. Beyond that, it's an ambling mess. With awkward dialogue and wooden acting throughout, it looks like DePalma filmed rehearsals and just went with those takes. The sporadic Willis narration is annoying, as it seems to simply explain what the viewer is looking at instead of providing any third-party insight. Hanks and Griffith seem uncomfortable with the lines they're forced to deliver and Griffith's character's constant malapropisms are overbearing and painful to listen to. Read the book. It's great.

Despite the cast absolutely nothing works.

Although Tom Hanks and the actor who played the father were excellent, I hated the movie. Bruce Willis did a good job as his character as well, but the movie was vapid. It was like having styrofoam for dinner...a two hour dinner. Amusing that this movie would likely not be made in this year, 2020. The Black stereotypes would cause an uproar.

This is a weird movie. Its heightened satire is so big it borders on spoof. But a TERRIBLE movie? Not at ALL. A hilarious representation of the ease with which rich white men get through life, & how ill prepared they are when things don't go exactly as planned. Hanks is wonderful as an insufferable, naïve oaf, & Freeman's "decency" speech is perfect; fantastically ironic in its obnoxious sincerity, displaying how the "right" person can not only get away with (literal) murder but can be celebrated for it.

i thought this was pretty good

i may be the only person on the planet who thought this was a good movie...didn't it show the seedy side of the idle rich? and the hollowness of glamour? what's not to love about that?

The filming, the acting, the writing, the humour and hilarity, is just very well done, to quickly to summarise. If one were to view this film properly, it would be discovered it is underrated.

Brian De Palma's The Bonfire of the Vanities is not in the sense of the word a consistent movie (its actors seem to only be great when they feel like it), the satire is sometimes cringingly unfunny, and I paused the movie once in frustration. But, halfway through the movie, I realized that I was genuinely enjoying its good qualities, so therefore I give the movie three stars despite of its gaping imperfections.

I saw this movie yesterday on HBO. At first, I did not like the movie. It felt painful to watch because it was easy to know that the lead characters (and everyone else) was making poor judgment and none would secure a good outcome. But the movie proved to be morally tugging. On my third try, I stayed on long enough to see a twist in the plot and, from that moment on, the movie became cathartic. Yes, it is a cynical movie about greed, lust and vanity. But there is an equally subterranean belief and decency and goodness has intrinsic value. Morgan Freeman's performance is superb. I can see that the movie was a flop. Perhaps it only illustrates how we want instant excitement and become less and less willing to wait till the plot (and life) unfolds. Learning is a slow process too. Wait a little longer and don't walk away too soon.
