Book Club Reviews
Feel good sweet movie to sit back and relax with. Not quite on par with something as enchanting as Father of the Bride in the same genre, but we get so few of these sorts of nice movies nowadays.
Sappy, formulaic, predictable, and embarrassingly below all involved in the all star cast. How many more "funny" old lady cliches could they cram into this thing? Yes, of course all older women drink gallons of wine whenever they sit around drooling over badly written mommy porn with their book club buddies. And yes, I believe uber wealthy Andy Garcia's character is sadly sitting around twiddling his thumbs in his mansion waiting for Diane Keaton's character (who IRL is 11 years older than he is) to catch a clue after dumping him and come back to fulfill his empty, meaningless existence. Have you ever seen a rich guy at a loss for female companionship and practically begging for commitment? Let's ask Bill Belichick, 72, who is dating a 24-year-old ex-cheerleader or maybe we should dig up ol' Hugh Hefner and ask him how many older women he sat around in his mansion pining over? Nope, didn't happen. His last wife was 60 years his junior. Come on Hollywood. AI could write more believable scripts than this, and probably has!
Any modern movie with Diane Ketones and Hanoi Jane is a bust.
Humorous take on a classic storyline (friends meeting at book club over stories that relate to their personal storylines). Relationships were believable, good comedy and wisdom for all of us in the various relationships portrayed. I cried multiple times!!
I was expecting more, given the veteran cast. (Spoiler) plot inconsistencies/questions: 1. How could the Jane Fonda role move to New York without changing, as Arthur told her he wouldn't try to change her? 2. I thought the Candice Bergen character didn't have children. However, she is toasting the engagement of Jared, who she calls her son, near the movie's end.
It was boring and trite. A waste of actor talent
This movie is not great but if your looking for a film about friendship among women you can do way worse. The plot is just an excuse to have four women of similar ages be friends. Now does the chemistry work kinda, Sharon is a bit stiff and Vivian comes off like the popular girl hanging out for some reason with the geeky girls. The romances kinda work but their relationships to their husbands/boyfriends are the only thing the sells good. Worth watching only if your in it for the experience of having a movie center around four female friends having fun in an adventure and don't care what its about.
Watched it on the plane. It was very cute and funny. Had a good time.
Wow! Even this star-studded cast can't overcome the terrible script. It's like watching unrelated stand-up comic acts fail one after another. This takes unbelievable to a new low.
Disappointing misuse of some fine talent. Slow, tedious, unfunny.
This was a star-studded cast that totally missed. The story was juvenile and predictable. With a lot of crappy jokes. What was amazing was that the seasoned actresses were not believable. Their lions were delivered halting and missing the cues. It was embarrassing . supporting cast also a lot of bad acting. I was looking it up to see if it was a flop at the box office. Unbelievably it wasn't.
A great feel good with an outstanding cast. What's not to love?
Sometimes I tend to take movies too seriously. I have to remind myself that a good "popcorn" movies deserves as much credit as any other type of movie. And if ever a movie succeeded on the sheer likability of its actors, this is the one. If you liked FIRST WIVES CLUB, you'll dig this one, too! Of the four storylines, I personally preferred Steenburgen's, which was reminiscent of the wonderful Meryl Streep/Tommy Lee Jones movie HOPE SPRINGS. A truly impressive group of supporting actors stand back and let the four leading ladies shine, as true gentlemen do. Maybe my expectations going in were just low, but I found this a charming, sometimes laugh out loud crowd pleaser that was one of the nicest cinematic surprises I have had recently.
Normally a sequel is worse than the first movie, but oddly enough it's the other way around with Book Club. This first edition is sweet and funny, but I guess the director squeezed a bit more out of the second script. Anyway, even this one is a cute flick with loads of incredible actors. 6/10 points.
Just all around enjoyable
A total waste four very talented actors .
So, I've seen a LOT of movies. A lot of incredibly horrible ones, a lot of overrated, pedestrian, gimmicky, pretentious trash. But I've also seen some inventive, brilliant, truly original pieces as well. Is this either of those? Nah. But it's still fun to watch. Not everything we watch has to be this deep, introspective, meaningful three hour long story. Sometimes we just need a feel-good, light movie and this is one of those. It isn't hard to follow, you don't need to watch subtitles, it's just an easy watch, feel-good movie. I liked it, all things considered. The cast is phenomenal. I mean, how they got Jane Fonda, Diane Keaton, Candice Bergen, and Mary Steenburgen, along with the smaller parts played by Don Johnson, Andy Garcia, Alicia Silverstone, and Richard Dreyfuss is beyond me. The cast list is superb and that alone would make me watch it. I am watching it again as the next movie just came out, Book Club: The Next Chapter, so we will see how that one is, but this one is enjoyable. Not perfect by any means, but enjoyable.
LOL, the funniest 01 hour: and 44 minutes ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What a cringe fest. I'm embarrassed for the cast.
