Boy Reviews
Quirky Kiwi family drama set in the 80s. Most of the story, including the violence, is sanitised to the point of cartoonishness, helping to keep a positive vibe rather than sinking into despair and helplessness.
Reading between the lines it's more like Once Were Warriors.
This has all the hallmarks of a great Hal Ashby film. It's absolutely heartbreaking, heartwarming and incredibly hilarious. All in equal measure. This is an incredibly hard feat to pull off
Amazing movie, I definitely recommend this movie. It shows a great story but you have to watch and find out what it tells you.
This movie is definitely one of my favorite, the story line is beautiful and the movie isn't predictable. I really like it, the characters and there story line are great, U should Definitely watch it!!
You can't call yourself a true Taika fan until you've seen this movie. I cried, smiled and laughed. Like all Waititi films, this one teaches the soul. There is: funny symbols that examines guilt. We receive selfless help from where we would not even expect, from the person we hurt. However, Boy becomes a better person because he saw the counterexample (the vision of a fake hero which stripped away his layers through continuous value destruction). It became one of my favorite movies.
One of my favourite movies of all time! It is heart-breaking, heart-warming, and hilarious all at once. Love love love this film!
This is a very powerful film and is sure to leave the audience with a lot to think about. The story is beautifully woven between comedy, real life, and, dramatic interludes. Boy's hero worship for his absentee father is such a pure emotion that is depicted throughout the film right up until he realizes who his father is. The animation provides a unique way to emphasize certain scenes along with the beautiful natural scenery in New Zealand. Although child neglect is clearly depicted throughout the film, the ending scene brings hope to the new path for the father-son's relationship going forward. I was touched, happy, crying, and savoring some of the memorable lines throughout the film and have found myself re-watching this gem several times each year since I first saw it. The final line in the film gets me every time along with the wonderful ending Haka. This is a must see film and is destined to become a classic.
AMAZING NEED TO WATCH IF YOU'RE MAORI AND A NEW ZEALANDER YOU WILL LOVE IT
Boy is a great example of what you can achieve with less
Boy is a charming comedy film. The New Zealand locations are beautiful and home to very real characters. Good deep laughs and emotion in this genius film.
A touching image of a youngster realising that his father is a human being rather than a deity. Every male will be aware of this point in their lives and be able to relate to the boy character right away.
maybe in house humour for those "down-under" but a funny quirky well made movie that taika nailed !
"Boy" starts off in captivating fashion: it's a palpable depiction of childhood in rural New Zealand, brimming with imagination, set in beautiful locations and helmed by an excellent performance from the 12-year-old James Rolleston. Progressively, the film loses some of its steam as it arguably focuses a bit too much on the money subplot and, even in its crucial character moments, feels a tad too tame. Still, the contrast between the idealized version of Boy's dad and reality is quite resonant.
Ignore the distracting and seemingly pointless bits of animation that pop up periodically. Turn a blind eye to the sporadic flights of fantasy that don't accomplish much of anything and feel lazy. Hope that you have access to subtitles as the accents are difficult to comprehend at times, unless you're from that part of the world. All of that aside, Taika Waititi's Boy is a sensitive and touching story of a young boy named Boy (James Rolleston) coming to terms with the fact that his father is not all that he imagined him to be. Waititi, who also plays the role of the father, does an excellent job tapping into the childhood angst of a child lost in the world, preoccupied with finding his place. There are a handful of laughs, enough good nature to make you smile, and some touching insight into the fractured relationship between a father and son.
One of the saddest movies I have ever watched. It was disturbing. This movie was made at the expense of the kids .... a reality all too many live in NZ. Only a comedy and funny if you were watching it as fictional... but it's not. Sadly
One of my absolute favorites! I've seen it about 4 times now. You can see that this is Taika's love letter to his hometown,
