A Boy and His Dog Reviews

started all the Mad Max movies ... a great flick and made back when female nudity was ok lol

One of only two movies directed by veteran actor L. Q. Jones, A Boy And His Dog is a cult sci-fi thriller from 1975 set in a Mad Max-style post-apocalyptic Earth where society has divided itself into two rather twisted slices of madness. We follow Vic, an 18 year-old boy played by Don Johnson, who walks through the desolate wasteland that is the world, thieving and scavenging, with the help of a telepathic dog he calls Blood. Yes, this movie's best kept secret is that it's both a very adult science fiction film with some genuinely disturbing elements and it's also got a dark sense of humour, hence the talking dog. Before you picture a cross between Steel Dawn and Show Dogs, I should point out that A Boy And His Dog is a much better and more interesting movie than these two combined. This is a truly messed-up and unpleasant depiction of the future, one that's a lot more daring and repellent than in most science fiction films, so be warned: it does contain some pretty graphic scenes à la Clockwork Orange. The world above ground is one where men are monsters who kill and enslave each other, where rape is an everyday occurrence, so it's particularly scary to see our protagonists, not only fail to criticize this society, but not even try and actually take part in it. Vic and Blood, along with Quilla (Susanne Benton), a young woman they met along the way, discover a city underground called Topeka, in which a seemingly more civil society has prevailed, with Quilla's father, played by Jason Robards, being part of the ruling Committee. Topeka, it turns out, is also quite twisted in its own way and Vic eventually rejects it. This is one movie the likes of which you rarely encounter. It's the kind of film you see once and remember vividly long after. This unsettling vision of the future and the passive way in which our supposed heroes have accepted and adapted to it, along with the black humor throughout, especially when it comes to the shocking ending, makes A Boy And His Dog a hard film to forget. If you're not expecting anything from it, it's likely to send a few (probably unwelcome) surprises your way. For such a low budget film, it really makes quite an impact. With a premise as potentially silly as this, it's a miracle that it never turns into a joke like the much campier Barbarella or Zardoz. It'll turn off some viewers pretty quickly but A Boy And His Dog is, frankly, a must see. It's never particularly pleasant but there's something fascinating about this world gone mad and its odious inhabitants who have resigned to the folly around them, regrettably, without much resistance. Bizarre.

The movie is based on the Harlan Ellison short story of the same name and does a pretty good job of following the story line. Post-apocalyptic with a telepathic dog (Blood) helping Vic (a young Don Johnson) find his way around in the world. Loyalty and Love, but who's love, and who's loyalty?

I liked the gritty apocalyptic look. Some desert scenes needed more depth, better sets and proper supporting characters, like Roadwarrior. The underground scenes were ridiculous and could have been done way better with a more imaginative plot, think Stepford Wives 1975 and West World 1973. Don and the Dog's acting made the movie, female nature they exposed perfectly, and the ending they got absolutely right.

Definitely had a very strong influence on the Fallout franchise, with the twisted caricatures of American society and underground post-apocalyptic bunkers. During the Cold War, it looks like the threat of nuclear annihilation really got people wondering what the aftermath of the big blast would be; some opted for twists on classic material, like I Am Legend and its first film adaptation, The Last Man on Earth, which mostly explore loneliness and the folly of man. A Boy and His Dog opts for a more brutal approach than most of its contemporaries, hanging out in purely amoral survivalist territory where every character attempts to use one another for their own personal gain, even if they pretend to have a skin of charm hiding their true intentions. But it's not all doom and gloom, scrounging-in-the-rubble stylings; there's a whole twisted bit of surrealism with a community of survivors operating in a self-sufficient dystopian bunker wearing whiteface and condeming dissenters to death. The movie definitely tries for more shock value than anything else (though the talking dog kind of takes away from the seriousness of the situation), and you would be hard-pressed to find someone that thinks this film is a really tough take on human nature, but it was one of the earliest films to dive into the now-standard barren post-nuke landscape. Nowadays it's not going to find a ton of new fans given the accusations of misogyny all the way back in 1975, where you've got a tag-team pair of protagonists that work together best when they're trying to scrounge up women to rape. Not exactly guys to root for, but you're not supposed to root for them anyway. (2.5/5)

Cult Classic one of Don Johnson's most amazing films along with the series he does later on that doesn't get reviews and is amazing too in England with one of those Harry Potter dudes. One of the most underrated actors.

One of those Indy films every cinephile should see. The dog deserves an academy award post Mortem. Another movie that could be remade well.

It looks a bit messy but then again it is an old film. It is quite nicely shot. It looks good for a film of this age but it does not sound good for any film. The audio quality is low. There is little dynamic range in the sound. You could tell what was going on but that is the highlight for the audio. The makers of Fallout have definitely seen this film! It is pretty good. The story is interesting and a different take on post-nuclear war life. A classic nuclear devastation movie that has many references in modern films and games.

Every fan of the post-apocalyptic wasteland and dogs should see this. I wasn't 100% for the ending it had but it's hard to knock the middle finger it gave to everyone but the boy and his dog.

If you are a Fallout fan, better watch the 1982 movie The Atomic Cafe. A Boy and His Dog is complete utter trash. This movie is extremely boring, especially during the underground vault scenes! Unlikable characters, it feels soulless and pretentious as if it wants to be edgy like A Clockwork Orange. The only likable character that was amazing in this movie was the dog. Sociopath doggo is best doggo.

No other movie ive ever watched has made me feel completely shell shocked mentally due to not having a plot, not having characters that make sense, for senseless ramblings from a telepathic dog whose entire existence in the movie is to alert the "protagonist" of the location of women to rape (yes, thats not an exaggeration), for the numerous character, location, and plot introductions that never get resolved. It seems to try to be "A Clockwork Orange", "The Holy Mountain", or some other type of hyper violent or "artsy" movie, but cant bet out of its own pretentious way. I genuinely dont know if Ill ever see a movie worse than this one .

A post-apocalyptic movie featuring a disturbed, sex-crazed teenager and a sage, wise cracking dog and all the zaniness that entails, A Boy & His Dog was a film I found to be sporadically enjoyable, mostly empty and occasionally dull. The back and forth between our 2 leads was the most interesting and entertaining part, since the dog gets in a lot of witty jibes while the boy fails to offer retorts which are anywhere near as clever. The wasteland is well-envisioned and admirably realistic, much like in the Mad Max films, which this movie coincidentally inspired. The film details some of the uncomfortable, even brutal things our leads haver to do in order to survive, and that's when the narrative is at its most compelling. Unfortunately, the movie is very much made up of 2 halves. The first half is interesting, the second is not. It actually feels like the ending of a completely different movie somehow interrupted this one, where we're transported to a world underground that looks like modern-day town populated entirely by performance artists. Harlan Ellison was angry when people called this portion of the film boring, since that's what it was supposed to show, but intentionally making a part of your film dull is a very risky move, and considering how much time this part occupies, I found it impossible to stay invested. The film ends on something of an ambiguous note, but since our lead appears to have neither learned nor gained anything from the underground experience, it just makes it feel extra pointless. If post-apocalyptic films are your thing, then this might interest you. But if you watch it, I'd suggested ignoring the underground part entirely. You'll have a better time that way.

Blood is my spirit animal. He's smart, courageous and loyal. Using his sharp wit, Blood gives the film an excellent perspective of a post-apocalyptic world.

Totally getting Fallout vibes. That dog has such a great personality. I love how they can communicate telepathically to each other. It's interesting to see the different set pieces like what a theater would look like during post-apocalyptic times in the desert. I love how they've come together to form a very entertaining duo. That is one of the best acting dogs I've ever seen. Boy, do I love 70's boobs and bush. Wow, this blonde girl is stunning. She's really pretty and cute. That's the kind of girl you want to protect and have around during an apocalypse. What the fuck is going on?! Is he dreaming all this up? This is a societal nightmare. What a weird and odd twist in the movie. Those speakers all around the town reminds me a lot of Bioshock. Pretty dark and cynical especially at the end but it was funny and I was definitely satisfied with the ending. Holy shit this movie was really good! Very creative and original. This is a very original take on dystopian society and post-apocalyptic life that I've never seen in a movie all at once. Both Fallout and Bioshock were definitely influenced by this movie. I have to download this movie and own it just because of how many different ideas it gave me and just how original and fresh this movie is.

A lot of fun, dated, a lot of ideas that would end up in the Fallout 3 video game. The dog steals the show. A really good bad movie.

One of my top 10 movies of all time! But only for those who can let their minds loose. Don't make the mistake like I did of mentioning you liked this movie without details, to your grandparents tho -- mine walked out after 10 minutes.

Still my favorite camp classic film.

It's a pretty unique movie and it could have been close to a cult classic but the story makes a lot of poor choices. The main female protagonist is non-stop threatening to be raped by bad guys and even the hero, and she also shamed for whatever way she succeed to avoid it. She also proves that she loves the hero, making sacrifice to save him and how she is treated for that (especially at the end) lets a bad taste in the mouth. For that, all the boy and his dogs becomes loathsome characters. There is not much of a story and there is a weird sudden change of surrounding in the middle of it. The movie still gives creative visual sometimes (with some psychedelic inspirations) but it's hard to not compare to the less-cheap Mad Max in terms of elaborated universe and setting.

Well, definitely weird enough to be a cult. Not good enough to be recommanded though. It was like the first part and the second part of the film, did not match.

As I have gotten older, this movie gets weirder and weirder to me
