Broken City Reviews

A predictable, but entertaining political thriller that sad to say would have been better if they cut the romantic sub plot from the entirety of the movie.

Cool movie. That said, there were multiple plot holes. Russell Crowe and Mark Wahlberg did a great job. On the other hand, Natalie Martinez was annoying or at least the character she played totally sucked. There were a couple of plot twists and turns that kept the movie interesting and entertaining.

Wasn't too bad. Considering I've recently seen mile 22 with mark in and that was terrible. Catherine didn't have much to say, and the movie looks a bit dark. Crowe is over the top and trying to bring life or his chapter but that gets in the way. I do think mark has talent and he fit in quite well. I despised the actress in this sorry who cheated. Preferred the blonde who helped marks character in his office. Ah well. Maybe they'll make a follow up that could be interesting.

Just not there. Action and acting is not good as well as the story. Disappointing because it seemed like it should have been entertaining

Movie for the evening no more The current mayor of New York, Nicholas Hostetler, who again runs for this post, hires ex-cop, and now private investigator Billy Taggart, to follow Nicholas's wife Kathleen, who, it seems to him, has long since cuckolded him. True, Billy does not yet realize what role he is assigned in the game of the mayor. The film 'City of Vice' was filmed in 2013 by Allen Hughes, one of the brothers of the Hughes directorial tandem, who shot such strong films as 'From Hell' and 'The Book of Eli'. However, the 'City of Vice', the trailer which turned out to be much more interesting than the film itself, has already become one of the main disappointments of the current film season, failing miserably at the box office. Despite the excellent miscasting of the film, high-quality directing with a gloomy neo-noir style and the lack of a clear division of the main characters into purely positive and purely negative (in this film, everyone is equally good), after watching it one wants to exclaim: 'Is that all?!', because the plot in the picture, unfortunately, it is not particularly twisted, the denouement comes extremely quickly and predictably, although there are many prerequisites for an excellent political thriller in the film, but screenwriter Brian Tucker did not really bring the plot to greater completeness and thoughtfulness. The only real plus of the picture was its cast, which includes Mark Wahlberg, who played the role of the controversial Billy Taggart, Russell Crowe, who appeared in a very atypical image for himself, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Barry Pepper. It is on the excellent acting of the actors that the essentially shaky construction of the film rests, because the characters played by the above actors are charismatic and interesting. Cinematographer Ben Seresin shot the film in a dark and viscous manner, which skillfully anticipates suspense, in fact, its complete absence from the tape. Not bad in the picture and the soundtrack, written by Atticus and Leo Ross and Claudia Sarn, sounding disturbing and tense in it. So, 'City of Vice' is not the most successful example of a political thriller, without much intrigue and an interesting plot, which deceptively lures the viewer with an excellent cast. You can watch this picture only out of idle curiosity or if there is no better movie on the horizon.

Swing and a miss, super boring, muddy and bloated plot, Russell Crowe is God awful, the older and fatter he gets the worse he acts it seems

When first released, rated 4 stars, after recently revisiting, it falls to a solid 3 star rating. Looking back, this feels like it was the general building up to a movie much more watching in this category, "The Departed."

I hated it. I hated it so much. It was terrible from the start to the end. Even with a gigantic cast, this below average and cliché thrilling movie with corruption was a complete fail for me. The acting is bad so are the lines the actors have to say. It doesn't make sense and it's absolutely dumb. The filmmaking, however, was okay. And the story...the story...was a 1 on 10. It didn't follow. There was so many plot holes, inconsistencies and other flaws in the scenario that it was difficult to watch. It was hard to know what was happening. Seriously. Booooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooorrrrrrrrrrrrrrrriiiiiiiiiiiiiigggggg for a thriller.

Decent. Billy caved back into his drinking habits too easy though. Barry Pepper was the most convincing in his role. A smug rich prick. Yea, he was. And the tape from seven years earlier…how did he have that? It’s always seven years ago…in the movies why is it always seven years ago???

Enjoyable, but not predictable so that was good. I like all the stars. Russell Crowe character was a little odd but believable. The secondary actors were well cast. Got sucked in and could not stop watching.

Broken city is your average thriller with very little thrills. It’s a shame the movie has a great cast and the performances are well done. The story just takes too long to go anywhere the pacing is bad and it’s predictable. Broken city really needed better writers and a better director to make it a memorable thriller.

I enjoyed this movie more than most for sure. That's because i'm a fan of mystery movies. Some what predictable but still worth a watch in my opinion.

easily be underlined.. Broken City Broken City is a plot driven political thriller about the tricks and cheats between the cops and politicians of the city that is drunk in corruption. Amidst all the ramblings of the current society and political conditions, the essential husky bits somehow can easily be underlined, which takes away the mystery out of this raw dark tale. To manipulate these many characters on screen, is not a piece of cake and the makers in here fails to move them around like puppets and as it grows essential after a while to pull off such a heist as it fails to bind all these incidents together in one act, where the editing too is to be blamed. The hidden cards up the sleeves are neither impressive nor worth the amount of work and time it consumes. Wahlberg's character is too loud to read and isn't performed well enough to make it intriguing enough to keep the viewers invested. Crowe's reserved portrayal backfires and Jones fails to change even a dime. The script is brimmed with cliches with every benign twists and turns and familiar structure that is clearly off putting. The background score is non existent as in it fails to factor in effectively, whilst the camera work and theme doesn't demand attention at all, in fact if anything it even fails to convince the viewers for a second look. Armed with Tucker's narrow minded script, Hughes's hands are tied to visit newer territories on execution. Few tiny notions amongst all the fame and controversies, the practicality of the corrupted city and Wright's decent support are the only high points of this sunken feature. Broken City is a juvenile remake of those 70's political thriller, polished with none whatsoever finesse for it to create a long lasting impression or even a mediocre impact.

In this movie, Russell Crowe was my enemy and Mark Wahlberg was my friend, which is so the opposite of how it usually is. I am usually drawn to the strong, stoic supporting actor, but Russel Crowe held the key to this film's plot, and Mark Wahlberg is the one that carried it through. I think all of the relationship subplots (Cathleen, Katy, and Natalie) deserve a movie of their own. They were captivating.

It's good movie to watch

Great acting from a great cast that is consistently marred by a vague script with too many stories to tell and too many major plot templates that are either too complex to understand or too vague to notice. Wahlberg is the highlight; his character is very likeable, increasingly so as the film progresses. Might be inclined to watch this again, just to satisfy my taste for crime thrillers, but it's the last such film I'd recommend to my fellow filmgoer.
