Brooklyn's Finest Reviews

Sep 4, 2024

Not on the same level as Training Day or some other Antoine Fuqua films, Brooklyn's Finest is still a solid and interesting crime thriller following multiple characters whose paths all lead to the same destination.

Amazing movie. Had me on the edge of my seat the whole time. Couldn’t tell what was gonna happen at the end of the movie, but you know it’s gonna be intense. And it was!

It’s July 2024 and I went back to watch this great one. They don’t exactly make them like this anymore. Outstanding performance from ALL the actors. Great true depiction.

It's good for what it achieves in some instances. My big take away is there's too many sub-plots with little time and they don't go anywhere. Both Geer and Hawke were beyond serviceable in their roles and in fact in many scenes it felt very natural for Geer in the blue. He pulled it off but this can only move the needle so much !

This was an ugly film. A lot of undesirable characters and seedy situations. However, the leads shine, in particular Hawke and Geer. So many great and challenging scenes. I think fans wanted Hollywood, this ain't that.

Fifteen years later, still dumbfounded by this movie's poor reviews. Yup, it's derivative. Yup, it relies on tropes. Okay, at this point, what kind of NYC cops & crime movie doesn't rely on derivation and tropes? Directed by the best cops & crime director in the business, I've been glued to my television screen every time I've watched this.

Gritty, well performed, excellent cast. Storyline was a bit disjointed and did not flow. The performances carry the movie.

Filme de qualidade e com elenco de peso. Infelizmente a violência nesse filme foi pouca para mostrar a brutalidade da realidade do submundo.

I liked the 3 storylines but training day was better. There are better cop movies out there end of watch we own the night etc. This film is worth a watch for the acting and storylines though its nothing special

surprisingly dark and not especially interesting.

I like this movie. It's not Training Day & it's not supposed to be. Cops, crime & criminals.

Carlo Powers and Detective Sal Procida (Ethan Hawke) are having a conversation in a car when Sal shoots Carlo, grabs a bag of money and flees. Sal later confesses the murder to a priest, asking for help with his dire situation: his wife is pregnant with twins, and they live in a house that is too small for their four existing children; it also has mold that jeopardizes his family's health. Desperate to move, Sal has arranged to purchase a larger home through a woman who owes him a favor. The down payment is due the following Tuesday, and Sal is still short. Sal, who is a highly skilled and accomplished narcotics detective, has begun to pickpocket drug money from raids. Officer Edward "Eddie" Dugan (Richard Gere) is a week from retirement after 22 years of unremarkable service to the force. Eddie is assigned to oversee rookies in the tough neighborhoods. However, his personal life is in shambles; as he swills whiskey in the morning to get out of bed, and the only person he can speak to honestly is Chantel, a sex worker he hires regularly. Detective Tango Butler (Don Cheadle) is an undercover cop working the drug beat. After losing himself in his role as a drug dealer, Tango is tired of the kind of attention attracted by a black man in a black BMW. Having been promised a promotion including a desk job for years, Butler is finally offered a way out if he betrays his close friend Caz Phillips (Wesley Snipes), a known criminal recently released from federal prison. Federal Agent Smith instructs Tango to set up the drug deal that will ensure Caz's arrest and return to federal prison... The film was met with mixed reviews. Rotten Tomatoes consensus reads: "It's appropriately gritty, and soaked in the kind of palpable tension Antoine Fuqua delivers so well, but Brooklyn's Finest suffers from the comparisons its cliched script provokes". In his review for the Chicago Sun-Times, Roger Ebert gave the film three stars out of four, concluding, "The film has a basic strength in its performances and craft, but falls short of the high mark Fuqua obviously set for himself." Mick LaSalle of the San Francisco Chronicle praised the actors for "bringing dimension to these stock characters", but criticized the film for being "a melodrama about three cliches in search of a bloodbath." A. O. Scott of the New York Times also gave the film a mixed review, stating, "the sheer charismatic force of much of the acting keeps you in the movie", but "Mr. Fuqua and Mr. Martin dig themselves into a pulpy predicament, and then find themselves unable to do anything but shoot their way out." The Los Angeles Times reviewer commented that "Brooklyn's Finest is an old style potboiler about desperate cops in dire straits that overcooks both its story and its stars." This Antoine Fuqua film is gritty, believable and violent with solid performances from a strong cast. Mr. Fuqua has delivered great movies such as "Training Day" and "Tears of The Sun" in my book. Yet, there´s nothing new about this storyline with cops on the borderline in one way or another. We have seen it way too many times. That makes "Brooklyn´s Finest" predictable, too long and slightly boring if you ask me. Trivia: The original ending as shown in Sundance had Eddie (Richard Gere) committing suicide after his retirement following the climax, which serves as to bookmark the ending from the opening. Director Antoine Fuqua eventually decided to end the film instead with a freeze frame of Eddie's face with blood and eyes swollen because he pointed out that the face, in metaphor represents America, dazed and confused, but still moving forward. He added, "There's still some hope, we still have a chance. We've taken some hits, but we're still standing. It kind of came out of everything that was happening." Thus the ending was reworked following the grim reception at the Sundance Film Festival.

In the tradition of Training Day, Brooklyn's Finest is a beautifully acted crime saga of intersecting, broken policemen chasing after what matters to them the most, respectively. Both well written and well directed. Richard Gere's character is perhaps the most compelling. Films like these demonstrate the high and low points of human character, and this one does so effectively.

Definitely NOT for the faint-hearted, this film is destined to become a cult-classic. You won't just like it - you'll love it. But neither will those who dislike it just dislike it... Give it a shot and see what side of the fence you fall.

This movie is gritty, dark, without the shadow of a smile. Mostly, it is intense. The dramatic tension is permanent and so is the impending doom. And no, there is no Equalizer to kick the bad guys' asses. Actually, the line "good guy" - "bad guys" is very elusive. there is not one bland character, and the performances up to par, with a small reservation about the choice of Ethan Hawke to play an Italo-American cop. Hawke overplays some scenes as well (ex: in the hospital, when his wife is sick) Anyway, if you like it dark and strong, go for it.

While critics have panned the film for its hackneyed plot, the thing is, that plot still works, and here, it works like new.

This is a good movie for what it is. The script is so so but the actors are really good at bringing the characters to life. It highlights the corrupt police force and street life. There are thousands of similar movies but that doesn't mean this one is the worse of them.

Brooklyn's Finest is directed Anthony Fuqua and it stars Ethan Hawke, Richard Gere, Don Cheadle and Wesley Snipes. Despite its star-filled cast, that deliver good performances here, the story and the writing just don't make up for it. The pacing is so slow, and it makes you completely lose interest in everything, especially the ending. This movie had so much potential, I had really huge expectations before watching it, and it let them all down. Brooklyn's Finest is far from being the finest of everyone involved in it.

Brooklyn's Finest should be a better movie given its cast & premise. Yet, it falls flat on delivery, is full of clichés, and is ultimately forgettable. The premise is solid. The movie revolves around the story of three officers in NYC's toughest neighborhood. Each officer battles with their own demons and teeter totter between the line separating good and bad. We are meant to emphasize with each officer and understand the moral dilemmas each men face. But all the good things stop there. None of the characters make any convincing changes from the beginning to the end of the movie. The roles are clichéd (dirty cop, undercover, old cop and rookie). And the acting comes off as unconvincing. 2/5. Dark and gritty cop movie. Short thriller but there is much better out films out there. PS: Shortly finished The Wire a couple weeks ago. Loved seeing Omar & Wee-Bey being friends in this movie.

Disjointed. Negative. Pointless film. There is nothing particularly likeable about any of the characters. The film was a waste of time from beginning to end. Nihilistic rubbish.
