The Brothers Grimm Reviews

Mar 18, 2025

The comedy didn’t land , it ends up neither being something you can take seriously or something that makes you laugh. Instead it’s just a bunch of stuff happening .

I remember watching The Brothers Grimm when I was a teenager. I thought I found it very entertaining but it's not very good as the other films by Terry Gilliam. It's kinda mediocre. I'd say it's probably a great insult to the fairytale characters like Red Riding Hood and Hansel and Gretel. Go and read books instead.

The only time I ever walked out of a theater mid-film was for the train wreck that was The Brothers Grimm. I went in expecting fantasy, comedy, and horror, but got a confused, boring mess instead. The moment they sliced up a kitten with a bladed fan contraption, I realized I wasn’t willing to sit through the gore and the snore

I love all the fairy tales easter egg references, but it fell short on my expectations.

Seems like the cast were more intent on making a Monty Python movie than a Terry Gilliam movie. Shame, really. With British actors in the lead roles, they might have succeeded. Nothing against American actors but they just don't get British humour.

I remember watching this when I was younger. It was a bit scary, but I loved it.

For all those watchers looking for the "beautiful imagery" after reading the RT critical consensus... you can keep looking.

A very guilty pleasure movie that deals with The Brothers Grim being con artists and realizes the supernatural is real and that they are forced to realize that they must become the heroes of their stories.

Terry Gilliam is a wonderfully talented Director, but he always has eyes bigger than his stomach, so to speak, and often times we feel like we're witnessing a visionary's compromised work, and The Brothers Grimm is the one that most feels this way. I've almost never seen a movie that clicks so abruptly, from time to time, from Hollywood Studio film to the work of an Auteur Artist, but it does so with regularity and the two halves don't feel right together. Worse, the movie almost feels like both the Executives and the Artist were promised 75% creative freedom, so what we end up with is an artistic film with imaginative, but often times sparse, locations, complex costumes that appear to have been recycled from older movies, and quirky camera angles that were intended to showcase the production art that is no longer present. Now, beyond this element, the movie is what I'd call "passably entertaining", with a story, screenplay and performances that are all competent but bland. This film actually marks the second time that Terry Gilliam was actually hired to make a movie that someone else wrote, the other being Twelve Monkeys - the difference, however, is that Twelve Monkeys, while in many respects a somewhat straight-faced story, did allow for some extremely quirky and offbeat cinematic musings, but this movie only seems to semi-afford that, most likely because the executives were keeping him on a shorter leash than they initially promised. The end result is a movie that's not bad by any means, but one that felt like it was originally interesting, and then later sanitized for the sake of drawing the normies into theaters.

Listen, I'll admit, it does not paint the famous brothers in the best light. They come off as hacks once the plot takes off and the historical figures they were based off were extremely respected, educated men. That's my biggest issue with the film. I also have a tiny problem that their fairy tales that made them famous, were all amalgamated into one core story. In retrospect with current Hollywood just being a copy, print in higher quality format, I really enjoy the creative liberties taken. I'm a big Star Wars fan so I understand the toxicity of fan bases, although I like some OG stuff I also enjoy when certain elements are changed for a refreshing story. Star Wars ran like heck with changing everything, The Brothers Grimm did in a way too but it was much more creative. Instead of changing things for the sake of it, they worked with the core elements of the stories and rearranged them for an interesting tale. Overall, it's not the greatest, it's not accurate to the titular characters' personalities. It also has slower pacing and less than fantastical visuals, think any 15-17th century movie with moving trees every so often to remind you it's magical. If all belief is suspended you might actually enjoy it but, if you're inquiry is too great, I don't recommend paying to watch it. Just watch it if you're out of stuff to binge and you either have HBO max or it's playing on cable/on demand. I wouldn't advise paying for the film out right or renting it, if it's already playing on something you own than okay. It is a fun film, but don't actively seek it if you want to see an accurate representation of the brothers or the stories. I do recommend it if you want an original story compared to the last decade of Disney live actions, or the overwhelming amount of reboots. We've literally had a Batman for every decade since his film debut, so if you want to branch out from the stale remakes this is a good movie for you.

Expecting some pure magic from the genius of Terry Gilliam, this film is sadly a rather grim disappointment. His unique and amazing analog model effects from films like Brazil, Time Bandits and The Adventures of Baron von Munchausen are far more impressive than most of the digital animations in this version of The Brothers Grimm, and maybe that's the main reason why the story seems to lack credibility, even though it's all fairytale.

The Brothers Grimm is very dragged and without excitement, a great idea, however, it was not executed in an attractive way.

a tip, this film was not very good, it seems to be an incredible film, but it is rotten, without any context, bad but not terrible.

Ambitious, witty and surprisingly gothic for a 12A. Terry Gilliams (of Monty Python fame) weaves exciting new yarn for the Brothers that popularised classical folktales such as Little Red Riding Hood. Fans of Heath Ledger's "A Knight's Tale" (2004), incestual threeways featuring Cersei Lannister, and Matt Damon's knack for the British accent are guaranteed lighthearted thrills.

An action film that plays better as a sleeping pill than an actual movie.

Gilliam manages some fairly fun ideas—the gingerbread man is deliciously funny—but tries to shoehorn so much in that there is no room for anything of narrative substance, while wide swaths are ineptly juvenile.

I watched this movie with high hopes, but was severely disappointed. This movie did nothing to stand out and seemed just be throwing the ball against the wall hoping it would stick. The movie didn't know when to be serious and when to be silly. Also, don't even try to make plot holes because they are all over the place.
