Brüno Reviews

Jan 25, 2025

A really funny and creatively raunchy spiritual successor to Borat that pushes the envelope at satirizing American materialism and homophobia while exposing some legitimately horrific and ridiculous sentiments said by the unknowing participants. It’s a hilarious mockumentary that was legendary during my middle school days and I’m so glad that I finally got to watch it.

One of the funniest movies I've ever watched.

One of the best irreverent comedies made by humans.

I love this movie and think it's hilarious, even more than Borat.

Hilarious movie. I love Sacha Baren Cohen's movies, especially those that are based on a character he created, such as Bruno

I must admit I did chuckle a few times at this but it definitely wouldn't be made fully like this today

I didn't like Borat, but I was a big Fan of Bruno! The plot was a little ridiculous, but the jokes and the humor was over the top!

Aug 24, 2023

Not like the movie wasn't funny at all but it doesn't hit the same as Borat and the funny jokes were further between

Sacha Baron Cohen is both immensely talented as an entertainer, but also tired and repetitive as a writer. He has a trend of writing his characters from the perspective of a bigot, and then using them as bait to draw out bigots, or push the tolerance boundaries of normal people and try to make them seem like bigots. He waits in the bushes for this kind of footage like an anthropologist waiting for Sasquatch. Bruno is a caricature of a gay man who fulfills every offensive stereotype imaginable. You may wonder whether this makes the character designer a homophobe, but ah you are wrong -- it's the people in whose faces he is thrusting his genitals who are the homophobes! Politics aside, I found Bruno absolutely hilarious in a crass sort of way. His improvisation and impersonations are top-notch. He creates absurd scenarios. As always, there is clever word-play. However it's sort of annoying that the guy has obvious political premises and an agenda that comes with his art, and he fulfills him with his cherry-picked and engineered provocations. I was a bigger Sacha fan when I was younger and I still am, but I am getting kind of tired of the consistent biased filter of those who produce our movies, and specifically the same old game played by Sacha in his movies.

I remember seeing Bruno when it first came out and much younger. I didn't enjoy it much because it made me uncomfortable and I don't think I understood a lot of the jokes. Fast forward to 2023, rewatched it and couldn't believe how intensely hilarious this movie is. My biggest gripe by far is that i wish it wasn't so short. The work SBC and crew puts in to make each segment work is incredible. These skits are not for the faint of heart. The only reason this has a low user score is because so many people are so thin-skinned. This movie is for rational minded people. If you are politically too far left or right, then you'll very likely walk away offended and make it very apparent you aren't a person to be fun around at all.

Pushing the boundaries of what can be in a movie—Brüno is laugh out loud hysterical throughout and continues Sacha Baron Cohens streak of mockumentaries that have a lot on their mind.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, Sacha Baron Cohen is the most fearless comedian alive. "Brüno" is just another example of that. This movie isn't as hilarious as the first "Borat" or the Showtime series "Who is America?" but it has plenty of shocking and jaw-dropping moments. If you do not like raunchy humor, absolutely avoid this movie at all costs. There are many uncomfortable moments but a good amount did make me laugh. The movie didn't really grab my interest at first but some of the bits became more and more insane as the movie progressed. Overall, it is an overwhelming movie that won't be for everyone, but as a fan of Sacha Baron Cohen, I had a good amount of fun watching this bizarre and often funny movie.

"Gayby" was funny then because it was satire. Now it's real life and it is not as funny as I remember.

This movie made me laugh and laugh and laugh. I saw it in theater and have never laughed that hard at a film. I was afraid it was going to be homophobic but it is not in any way. I do feel a bit bad for some of the "extras" who did not realize that they were going to be in a film and it is a bit exploitative due to that but I still find it so darn funny!

Although the movie comes at the cost of offending homosexuals, it definitely makes it clear that the key point addressed is the competence of a lot of people in the entertainment industry (and the general public as well, including myself). A must watch for 18+ folks who live superficial lives - I've watched it a couple of times.

With Bruno, Sacha Baron Cohen once again demonstrates that he is absolutely fearless when looking for a laugh. This time around he plays Bruno Gehard, a disgraced fashion journalist, who travels to America in order to seek fame and fortune. The movie is essentially a string of episodes where Cohen, as Bruno, punks unsuspecting victims in a variety of outlandish situations, the most notable of which involves him being interviewed on a talk show in front of a primarily black audience about the adoption of his African baby, who he named OJ and obtained through the swap of an iPod. There are plenty of cringe-worthy and uncomfortable laughs but, unfortunately, there are some stretches where the humor simply misses the mark.

I liked it. You never know what to expect from Sasha Baron Cohen.

Not really funnier than Borat but it had its moments. Some of it are pretty disgusting though LOL Sacha Baron Cohen takes it over the edge, of what can be shown onscreen or not. LOL. That ending though is epic, it hit the news and caused a real riot. Funny how a mob could go crazy over two guys in love. LOL

I am never offended by comedy. I find nothing sacred when it comes to creating laughs, so that has nothing to do with the score. The entire movie is just pandering to the audience. There is nothing "smart" about the film. Very disappointed. Sacha needs to change up his style. Maybe early 2000s me would have likes it better, but this was so meh.
