Buffaloed Reviews

Apr 1, 2025

A fun reflection on Buffalo, NY through the eyes of debt collectors. It was entertaining, but it was also crude making it hard to recommend to others. It did make me want to visit Buffalo and try those original wings like the Judge talked about. Saw on HBO.

60/100 - meh, funny but not the greatest

It is farfetched, but it is a fun little movie. It explores the debt collection industry that we all hate. It has numerous moments. It is ok, but nothing spectacular. Worth a watch.

Definitely wild. Solid movie.

Cougars of Wall Street needed more scenes.

Movie itself was pretty weak with they usual collection of "bad guy" men in the debt collection business, and a cute, young "heroine" to clean up the mess. Typical Hollywood BS, and made with a low budget. If you're from the Western NY area as I am, it's entertaining for all the cultural references to the area.

It was entertaining, but the premise felt forced and the performances were a bit over the top.

It's pretty forgettable but tough to be negative about. Buffaloed is kind of funny, has a good pace, and a fun lead character. Playing into the small town Buffalo bit was very enjoyable.

The protagonist is too insufferable to like any of the qualities of this movie and most of those are cheap copies of scenes done better in other films like this. The miscegenation is the cherry on top to make this a grade-A stinker.

The main character is a lot more compelling than the message. The climax kinda fizzled out for me, but I was engaged for most of the film. It's a good time, and worth watching.

If you ever wanted to know the lengths people will go to get out of Buffalo this movie represents it perfectly.

I expected this to be a low budget film with amateur actors. The movie was far better than what I expected. The story was well told, directed and had an excellent cast.

I first became really aware of Zoey Deutch in her scene-stealing turn in the 2nd ZOMBIELAND movie. She just popped out of the screen because her energy was wild and it was DIFFERENT somehow. She was in the role of "airhead blonde", but made it feel different and not like a cliche. Now, a year or so later, I see her in BUFFALOED, and my opinions of her were reinforced and enhanced. She plays Peg, grown daughter in a very poor household who is obsessed with making a lot of money (and getting out of BUFFALO). She's willing to study and go to school to get her way; but if there are less "legal" ways to get there, she's not adverse to doing that too. Her moral compass is askew due to her very bubbly, upbeat but manic desire to have a lot of money. So this compass gets her imprisoned at an early age, and when she gets out, she has trouble finding a job. But one day, she takes a call from a debt collector, and ends up taking a job AS a collector. She goes to work for one of the many collection agencies in Buffalo (who knew Buffalo was a big hub for this shady business?). But eventually, she simply has to strike out on her own, because the money isn't coming in fast enough. Deutch's Peg is empowerment personified. She is strong, independent, super smart, willing to work hard and never takes "no" as an answer, especially from men. What a great role model!! Yet at the same time, she's amoral, selfish, and honestly more than a little nuts. What a terrible role model!! And Deutch juggles it all because she brings this crazy energy that's both appealing and horrifying. I've never seen a character quite like Peg, and I doubt anyone else could have done her quite so grippingly. It's a amazing meeting of great actor with a perfect character. I could have watched her (and her insane clothing) all day! Right there, I recommend the movie...just to see her in action. However, I wish the movie itself was better. Tonally, it's all over the place, veering awkwardly from comedy to drama to romance to violence. The other characters are mostly underwritten and fuzzy. Noah Reid (Schitt's Creek) plays Peg's brother...his character and his character's decisions are all over the place because no motivation or real character development is provided. Jai Courtney plays the "bad boss" of the big agency. He's a terrible actor in a cliched role. The results are a villain we just can't care about. The filmmaker is also trying to teach us about shady debt collection, but this comes across as a clumsy version of THE BIG SHORT. It's an important topic, but generates little outrage (or even clarity) in BUFFALOED. In the end, see the movie for the explosive performance of Deutch. It's worth it for that treat alone!

The movie Leo hoped he was making with that "Wolf of Wall Street" nonsense. Sorry, no long scenes of the lead actor rolling around moaning, but a fun little romp through the world of debt collecting. (That was an odd thing to type ...) Zoey is a delightful presence. Hoping to catch more of her work elsewhere.

Wings at the Anchor Bar, shopping in an outlet mall, and tailgating at a Bills game aren't prerequisites required to enjoy Buffaloed, but they sure help. Zoey Deutch is electric as Peg, a potty-mouthed twenty-something with a mound of debt who turns the tables by resorting to debt-collection to ease her financial woes. Despite the fact that the premise eventually begins to wear thin, Deutch's performance alone is worth the time invested. Her infectious energy as the charismatic Peg keeps things interesting.

Good idea but didn't hit the mark. The cast were fine but the film lacked the ability to deliver.

Director Tanya Wexler and the likable and talented Zoey Deutch stars in a capitalism comedy giving new meaning to the term buffalo. The word has 3 meanings next to the city in upstate New York and a bison animal but many don't know that it also means to bully and intimidate. Zoey stars as Peg. Her mother is played by Judy Greer. As a kid half the city was out of work so she couldn't make enough money to feed Peg or her brother. But since then she always wanted to invest and studying profit margins and handling finances. Peg wants to go to college but she has to have the money for it. So when one of her scams falls apart she goes to prison. No Ivy League school for her so she gets her own education after serving 40 months in the clink. Peg is then stressed looking for work after she gets out but an opportunity presents itself: she gets to work with Jai Courtney as Wizz as a debt collector. He's a big hustler collecting money from all angles. The more debt they gather the more money Peg makes to erase her own. Later she decides to make her own empire. But how long can she keep it up before her old bad habits come back to derail her life? Peg is never the one to settle down so she has a goal in mind and no time for obstacles. It's become a turf war now. And perhaps it's the influence of Peg's father with his past gambling behavior that drives her to have such an unusual dream in the first place. Zoey Deutch works with such a clever script, snappy intelligent dialogue, a unique setting that fully embraces its location, and putting a comedic spin on the hustler business. It's all about stress relief when it comes to debt, selling a feeling not a product, some people prefer doing nice things for others other than expecting something in return, there doesn't always have to be an angle, alone a buffalo is weak but a herd is unstoppable, helping the poor is one thing but helping those whom are still fortunate is another Given that this movie is based on a real-life article about writer Buffalo native Brian Sacca who was swimming in debt and started his own business to get out it has some real life parallels. Even if some things are changed did Hollywood dramatic effect it's still a fun ride. A story of female empowerment and looking at the debt collection industry but also explores the resistance to female ambition in blue-collar America. Zoey Deutch is a treat to watch and it's informative knowing that people in this country are still making their own money of debt collecting from medical bills to student loans to household debt as well as more 1000 people daily complain against the whole business. A movie that makes this kind of social evil fun but still relevant.

This movie genuinely put me in a bad mood. What was it trying to be? The she-wolf of Wall-Street? How on earth did this get such positive reviews? The main character is just a bad person, but is somehow supposed to be the protagonist. She is a manipulative, narcissistic trash-bag who treats everyone, including her own family, like garbage. At no point in the movie am I rooting for her to succeed. The only way this movie could have ended well is if they Regina George'd that chick and hit her with a bus...
