Todd Gilchrist Variety “Bullet Train Explosion” feels like a blockbuster made for adults, where the priority is throwing challenges and complications at smart characters instead of sparking conflict with cheap narrative shortcuts and bad, even dumb choices. Apr 23, 2025 Full Review Jacob Oller AV Club This slow-speed collision is a glossy hi-def upgrade, but about as exciting as a word problem. Rated: C+ Apr 22, 2025 Full Review David Ehrlich IndieWire “The Bullet Train Explosion” might not offer anything close to the suspense of “Speed” (despite the fact that it moves significantly faster), but it does Takaichi proud by getting the job done, in spite of its faults. Rated: C+ Apr 16, 2025 Full Review Allyson Johnson But Why Tho? A Geek Community Bullet Train Explosion has a fun premise, but is stifled by its building blocks. Cold and detached, the film’s lack of energy bogs it down. Rated: 6/10 Apr 25, 2025 Full Review Siddhant Adlakha JoySauce.com It’s a bombastic, over-the-top work of action expressionism with a gooey, cheesy, utterly human core. Apr 25, 2025 Full Review Chris Joyce Movies and Munchies (YouTube) With uneven tones within the bureaucratic involvement and the underdeveloped villain, the overall story suffers and becomes an overlong slog that is broken up with intermittent bits of suspense. Vera N Kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time! A great message of humanity and professionalism overcoming all challenges. Super likeable characters - including the villain and the politician trying to recover from a scandal. And of course, the train crew are true heroes. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/25/25 Full Review Taiwo I This movie had everything. I enjoyed every bit of the movie. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/25/25 Full Review Pedro Henrique G Sinceramente… PERFEITO! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/25/25 Full Review RITAM D A classic reboot of 1972 "Bullet Train" film which becane quite popular at the time of its release due to its top notch thrilling suspense, amazing cinematography and its editing, has now shown the same result which bring back some old memories how cool were the 70s Japanese action movies. Quite an achievement over its pacing, its gritting story about the bombing plot by the mastermind with its thrilling suspense when it turns out to be a highschool girl behind this plot which was really a rollercoaster ride. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/25/25 Full Review Phil S Unbelievable nonsense. If you want an example of actors who graduated from the Tokyo School of Wooden Acting, watch this. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 04/25/25 Full Review Matthew D A chaotic Japanese thriller wherein a bullet train cannot go under 100 k/ph. Director Shinji Higuchi, one of the Shin Godzilla directors, delivers a crazy ride for his Japanese action thriller Bullet Train Explosion (2025). It’s like the bomb premise of Speed mixed with the precise response of Shin Godzilla and some of the public panic of Train to Busan. It’s incredibly silly tonally, but I had a lot of fun watching this goofy movie on Netflix. Higuchi’s direction is playful and does a great job of showing technical details. Writers Kazuhiro Nakagawa and Norichika Oba combine Speed, Shin Godzilla, and Train to Busan’s ideas into exactly the type of goofy action thriller you’d imagine. But, it’s very thorough in details of the train for an interesting series of dangerous scenarios. From maintaining high speeds, switching tracks at high speeds, colliding with other trains, uncoupling train cars, rescue trains, to panicked passengers. Tsuyoshi Kusanagi is great as the calm and thoughtful train conductor Kazuya Takaichi. Kanata Hosoda is funny as the foolish train conductor in training Keiji Fujii. Non is very cute and sympathetic as the brave train driver Chika Matsumoto, who has to keep the train up to high speeds. Machiko Ono is fun as the politician embroiled in a scandal named Yuko Kagami. Takumi Saitoh is great as the man in the technical command center named Yuichi Kasagi. Jun Kaname is amusing as the social media influencer Mitsuru Todoroki. Editors Kaori Umewaki and Atsuki Sato do some wild cuts and quick montages for all the chaos. Cinematographers Keizō Suzuki and Yusuke Ichitubo have some pretty wide shots of the cities as the train passes by besides some neat close-up shots of the people. The shaky camera parts are really annoying and disappointing for such an otherwise precise film. Hamada Kenichi vividly lights scenes with a neat aesthetic. Visual effects artist Atsuki Sato pulls off several big explosions with outrageous CGI. It’s a bit goofy looking, but very effective. Composer Taisei Iwasaki creates plenty of tension. Sound designer Hironobu Tanaka’s big noises are fun like the colorful costumes from Daisuke Iga. Overall, Bullet Train Explosion is exactly what you think it is, but manages to thoroughly entertain with precise details and silly characters for 134 minutes.
