Burke & Hare Reviews

There’s probably enough material in the movie for a deliciously macabre short. Unfortunately, the padding dilutes the aspects that work without adding anything worthwhile.

| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Mar 1, 2024

The film lacks any edge toward the material and assumes the subject (gore and dead bodies in abundance) will suffice, though it doesn’t.

| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Mar 9, 2023

A much worse movie than you'd expect John Landis to turn in...

| Original Score: 2/5 | May 20, 2021

"Burke and Hare" is funny and dark, and full of the quick, clever humor that you'd expect from two alums of "Spaced".

| Original Score: B- | Jul 11, 2020

Burke and Hare is timid and dithering and blandly bad, and the new Ealing Studios seems unworthy of its inheritance, and it's all just a damn shame.

| Mar 2, 2019

Burke and Hare fails at every turn. It's a romantic comedy without jokes or romance. It's a horror film without the horror.

| Aug 9, 2017

Burke And Hare is a damning return for Ealing. It's self conscious and off putting cameos ruin the film. Full of misjudged humour, mixing immature humour with overly mature gore makes this one not funny in the slightest.

| Original Score: 4/10 | Nov 9, 2013

Landis is too out of practice. I'm not sure 1981 Landis would have nailed it, but I know 2011 Landis doesn't.

| Original Score: C | Jun 22, 2013

A misfire to be sure, Burke & Hare's comedic timing feels one step off, resulting in a film with solid performances and an amusing story, but not many laughs and not much replay value.

| Original Score: 6/10 | Jan 29, 2012

Not a first-ranked film, but for fans of horror or even just comedy, BURKE AND HARE is will worth seeing.

| Original Score: 7/10 | Dec 19, 2011

'Burke & Hare', it's all a bit Monty Python without enough Monty or Python.

| Original Score: B | Dec 2, 2011

Rarely has the ratio of quality talent to dismal returns been as high as in "Burke & Hare,'' a macabre British period piece that's nowhere near as funny as it thinks.

| Original Score: 1.5/4 | Dec 1, 2011

Landis, the master comic talent behind Animal House and An American Werewolf in London, falters with this rusty comeback, his first feature since 1998.

| Original Score: 2/4 | Nov 29, 2011

...simply too mild - it's neither very scary nor very funny. It's not great.

| Original Score: 83/100 | Nov 25, 2011

"Burke and Hare" is a waste of a good cast and a better story, as well as a hollow reminder of how John Landis seemingly has lost his touch.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Oct 27, 2011

Expectations can be a bad thing for movies, and Burke And Hare is a good example of this.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Sep 15, 2011

A mildly funny dark comedy with iconic British wit and tongue-in-cheek humor.

| Original Score: 6.65/10 | Sep 9, 2011

John Landis returns with a macabre spoof of Enlightenment Scotland, starring Simon Pegg and Andy Serkis as entrepreneurial serial killers furthering the cause of science...and the arts.

| Sep 9, 2011

A droll take on one of the most notorious mass-murder cases of the 19th century.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Sep 9, 2011

All of the actors are enjoying themselves, and the movie is stuffed with history, atmosphere and vivid characters. What's in short supply, though, is laughter.

| Original Score: 2/4 | Sep 9, 2011
