Captain Ron Reviews
I really don't understand why this movie is ranked so low. It is fun family entertainment that is a little rough around the edges to keep it from being ranked a G. The role swap between Short and Russell with Short being the straight family man and Russell being the goofball is very well played. I think Short could've added to his career the way Robin Williams did when he did serious roles if he'd continued down this path. The shenanigans are hilarious and there are life lessons about family togetherness, the joys and perils of travel, and perseverance in the face of adversity. It is one of my top five favorite movies and I keep coming back to it to raise my spirits when I need a good laugh. I also wonder if when Kurt's son Wyatt referenced someone as "swab" in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, it was a tip of the the hat to his father in this film. If you haven't seen this movie, give it a try, especially if you are a Kurt Russell or Martin Short fan.
Captain Ron is the perfect family adventure film! It’s a fish out-of-water, comedy-of-errors storyline. It’s charming. It’s goofy. It’s kid friendly but entertaining for adults. If you’ve ever dreamed of buying a boat and taking off for high seas, then this is the film for you.
great movie funny and adventurous
Captain Ron perfectly captures owning a boat. It imagines the best parts and makes boat owners live through the worst parts. I watch this movie at least once a year and it never disappoints.
It took me three days to watch it. Sailing is actually more horrific than you can imagine. The antics were a tad silly but they were bad experiences which is what characterizes sailing. I can't believe people do it. My next sail will have to be at least 60' and have a great washer and dryer and ac.
Fun adventure movie. Always been one I watched growing up by catching it on tv.
one of my families all time favorites
This movie reminds of Summer Rental but lighter on laughs. I think at the time people expected more from a top notch comedy duo like Martin Short and Kurt Russell. Everyone played their roles well but could not overcome the weak writing. Still I have a soft spot for this film. It's good family viewing.
As a seafarer myself knowing the ins and out or the ocean and what it takes to get from A to B, Captain Ron is a sailing cult classic. Gets funnier every time you watch it (I've seen it at least 20 times now!). Please do watch this great, family friendly (there are some brief shots of Mrs Harvey in the shower and a couple of curse words, hence PG13) playful movie with laughs to be had in every scene!
This move is hilarious. Kurt Russell stole the film.
I know this one has a bad rep but it's just another case of bias from the critics. Everything doesn't need to be full of "ART" or forced conflict melodrama. A comedy can just be a comedy. Movies are allowed to be funny. Now that said, is it perfect? HELL NO! The pacing really lags in the middle. But as much as I love Martin Short, his character is the biggest issue of the movie. Through most of the movie he's an uptight jealous uptight prick. Which I guess it's the joke but that really wasn't funny. But that doesn't ruin the movie as the rest of the cast is written better and it picks up at the third act. Enough to say ignore the critics and have fun, it's a comedy not "Gone With The Wind". It's allowed to be shallow and stupid. An underrated gem of the 1990s.
This adventure comedy was pretty good. Kurt Russell, Martin Short, Mary Kay Place, Meadow Sisto, Benjamin Salisbury, and the rest of the cast did a pretty good job in this movie. The story of the movie was entertaining, humorous, and dramatic. It's about going on an adventure of a lifetime with unexpected things happening. If you haven't seen this movie yet, check it out sometime. Don't listen to all the bad reviews this movie got, those people have terrible tastes in movies. It's not that bad.
A great nautical comedy. Kirk Russell is hilarious and if you love sailing it's a really good movie. They just don't make movies like this anymore
Splashy adventures in the Caribbean as a mild-mannered big city businessman suddenly inherits a yacht and talks his reluctant family into a spontaneous month-long sea voyage. Martin Short is the oft-frustrated family man, whipped and stifled by the corporate world, who almost instantly regrets hiring his polar opposite (a mostly shirtless, mulleted, eye-patched Kurt Russell) to teach his family how to control their new toy. Most of the fun lies in watching Russell do whatever he wants - flirting with the wife and daughter, teaching the son to drink and gamble, pushing the boat to the point of disintegration - which rankles the father who sees himself being replaced by a newer, hipper model. There's nothing world-shattering here. It's a simple recipe that coasts on easy laughs and nice scenery, but at least it has a unique angle and a decent amount of heart. Short is vanilla and snobby as the leading man, prickly and unlikable, but that's how the character is written. Russell, on the other hand, pushes an overshadowing support role, one which could've easily been just as grating, into something more personable and endearing. We buy into Captain Ron's world philosophy because the actor also buys into it. As formulaic, predictable family comedies go, one could do far worse. Bonus points to those who choose to lean into the winking urban legend that this is how Snake Plissken relaxes between escapes.
This is one of my favorite go to anytime movies. I put it on and instantly I feel happier. It doesn't have to make perfect sense. I love it , I quote along with funny lines from it, dance in the living room along with the music at Ted's and when they went to Carnival, and cheer when they get their boat back. I just completely enjoy this movie.
Russell is good but the film is just not funny.
Captain Ron is a classic comedy & a cultural favorite of the cruising community. The fact that there was never a sequel made about the Harvey family's Caribbean cruising adventures is a tragedy. People who are not into sailing or do not own several issues of Latitudes & Attitudes magazine...have no business rating this film...as they wouldn't know a halyard from a back-stay...& much of the humor is lost to them. The island scenery of St. Pomme De Terre is beautiful.
IF you have ever sailed a boat, Or dreamed of casting off to foreign ports on your own boat, THIS is the absolute BEST movie ever made!!!! It covers almost every aspect of going to sea with your own boat and all the fun/problems/learning and growth that take place!!!!!!!!
I love this movie! Its fun. Has great music. Is a ferl-good that cant offend anybody. Suitable for kids. And sailors love it!
