Carmilla Reviews
From the opening picture with the sun lens artifact and then all the macro images of insects this is addressed to sensitive adolescent girls. Apparently many professional reviewers fall in the category. 23 minutes is all I could tolerate.
Although you would think this would be a faithful adaptation of Sheridan Le Fanu's novella, the movie strips the story of most gothic and vampire elements. Ultimately, it muddles the overall theme, making it a questionable study of prejudice and intolerance.
A sweet slow burn. Felt like it would be best watched at night with inscents burning. Its immersive period setting and displays of a quiet life draw the viewer in. I would recommend viewing this film to any lesbian vampire fans. Admittedly, the film does have a soft climax (which might be the only climax to fit the film) and its vampire imagery is minimal. Overall still well worth a watch even if the film is not perfect.
The way th is movie is riding the genre tropes and it is visual allusions to Coppola's Bram Stalker's dracula and True Blood and the generic period drama to get us to the conclusion is really really good. It is well played and well filmed. An engrossing movie
