Cedar Rapids Reviews

Phil Johnston’s screenplay has just enough heart to surpass its unabashed stereotypes and become a mildly effective comedy.

| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Jul 31, 2023

They don't let a joke go by without taking advantage of it and batting it with underhanded grace. [Full review in Spanish]

Giving her best performance in quite some time, Anne Heche is simply magnificent.

| Original Score: 3.5/4.0 | Sep 5, 2020

This is a well-made, imperfect kind of movie, containing a lot of laughs and heart despite its weaknesses.

| Original Score: B- | Aug 11, 2020

Cedar Rapids gains points for mixing up its very, very rude comedy with a real sense of purpose.

| Jan 21, 2020

A slightly uneven comedy with enough laughs to overcome the lulls.

| Original Score: B- | May 8, 2019

Isn't a blazingly original comedy, but it has such a nice, tender-hearted feel to it I was won over and charmed.

Ed Helms delivers some dialed-down, hilarious moments that never feel like second-rate gags.

| Original Score: B | Jan 29, 2018

Not as funny as it seems to think it is, but there are considerable pleasures to be found around the margins.

a fun little movie that really strikes a balance between comfortable friendliness and crazy silliness

| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Sep 16, 2013

The risks Cedar Rapids takes may not always pay off, but as a general rule, I would advise spending 86 minutes of your life with the movie rather than the city itself.

While this isn't destined to be remembered as a great standout comedy ... it is still guaranteed to provide a few giggles and knee-slaps.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Sep 27, 2012

With "Cedar Rapids," the filmmakers seem to put too much faith in their material, thinking that it would be funny enough to carry the whole film without them having to put too much thought into the story. Sadly, they were quite mistaken.

| Original Score: 2/4 | Sep 21, 2012

You've already heard what Cedar Rapids has to say, but the ensemble cast does a good job of going over the same ground so that you don't mind covering it with them.

| Original Score: 7/10 | May 4, 2012

The cast is inherently likable, and the comedy is pleasantly sweet-natured (even if crack pipes, c-bombs and references to The Wire abound).

| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Jan 17, 2012

... I wanted to spend more time with these characters ...

| Original Score: 6/10 | Sep 24, 2011

There's a restraint and sweetness to the raunch that keeps it below the threshold of certain other R-rated comedies about away-from-home shenanigans gone bawdily awry.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Sep 9, 2011

The supporting cast are uniformly excellent too, particular Reilly, whose blow-hard Deanzie gradually reveals a softer, empathetic side.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Jul 14, 2011

Hopelessly benign but still boisterous enough to deliver a mild buzz.
