Cheaper by the Dozen Reviews

Cheaper by the Dozen is one big missed opportunity. Braff and Union are great together, but the movie wants to do too much, with too little, hindering every good opportunity it has for something awfully familiar and too predictable for its own good.

In this rare instance, Cheaper By the Dozen needs more time. Whether that means a longer screenplay or a change of format to a television series, there were enough interesting concepts at play to warrant more time.

Directo Gail Lerner and Barris speak the same language so the direction is tight despite some tone and thematic issues.

This iteration of Cheaper by the Dozen is well-intentioned in that it wants to tell a diverse, inclusive story (mostly, ahem), but in trying to be so broadly representative, there’s no time to tell the myriad stories it wants to tell.

It's fun, it's light, it's entertaining, and I think children under the age of 10 will enjoy it.

It is instantly forgettable and pales even compared to the abysmal 2005 sequel to the Steven Martin version.

| Original Score: 5/10 | Mar 29, 2022

Cheaper by the Dozen overstuffs itself with hackneyed subplots, comedic pratfalls, and sentimental speeches.

A big family is a strong comic premise, and Lerner takes a buoyant, energetic approach.

You wont have a bad time watching Cheaper by the Dozen, but it doesnt really matter, because you wont really remember much about it after the fact.

People, especially within their family, don't talk in speeches ready for a PSA on Disney Channel (this could have been a DCOM but a weak one at that).

An updated remake that offers a few family laughs, but nothing more. Full review in Spanish

It’s kinda like a movie. Kinda like a sitcom. Not really either. But its sweet emotions and modern sensibilities eventually make it endearing.

| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Mar 23, 2022

The main issue here is a lack of cast chemistry. There's some tonal inconsistencies as well, as the film wants to do slapstick and poignant all at once.

| Original Score: 4/10 | Mar 22, 2022

An insipid reboot.... It cant be called a disgrace to the title since the Martin misfires had already trashed it, but its no better than they were, despite its pretensions to social relevance.

This movie's heart is in the right place, but the latest version of this familiar concept is a bit of a clunker.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Mar 19, 2022

The updates made to Cheaper by the Dozen work to better explain how such a large family exists, and functions, while the episodic, chapter-book quality of the storytelling serves the big ensemble well.

| Original Score: 6/10 | Mar 18, 2022

Its tone wavers even more haphazardly from kids flick to marriage portrait to slapstick comedy to stark commentary on race, without nailing any particularly well and despite endearing commitment from its performers.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Mar 18, 2022

Cheaper by the Dozen is worse than formulaic; it is lazy and condescending to its audience.

| Original Score: 1.5/4 | Mar 18, 2022

The only thing cheaper than this dozen is the corporate greed that created it

| Mar 18, 2022

It's in the latter portions of the film that the family's diversity begins to bear dramatic fruitage. Although still handled lightly, several issues are addressed in a mature manner that reflects modern-day concerns and realities.
