Originally wanted to watch just for Tom Hardy...but was so "into" this movie I wasn't even aware of what was going on around me...this is NOT one of those "thrillers" where you are screaming at the screen bkz the actors are so dumb & just don't get it...NOPE...this was a fast paced great movie that moves FAST and the main characters get what is going on at the same time you do !

Not a patch on the book, totally ignores the great ending of a great book

Interesting story, but there are some holes in the screenplay. Not bad.

It was so boring and not entirely hard to follow but half the time I didn't know what was going on and most of the time I just didn't care. It's got solid production value and the acting on it's own is good as everyone is giving it a good go. But the acting is just ok mainly because of the asetics and editing and pacing just wear it down. The cinematography, editing and pacing are all subpar. I swear the first 40 minutes probably could've been cut and just have them arrive at the work camp. It feels like the romance drama and the child killer mystery not only never really work together but worse neither is that interesting. This is so lifeless and dull to look at. It can't be stated enough it feels like I can follow some of it but just don't care enough to be invested. It's such a weird and boring feeling. I can't recommend this to anyone. It's just a whole lot of nothing. I already feel like I've forgotten over half of it.

This film's plot was so good, I watched it twice the same weekend. It was different, it was full of twists and turns and it had a great cast. Tom Hardy and Noomi Rapace were absolutely great in this film. You think the film is going in one direction and then it surprises you with a change in direction that you don't expect. I highly recommend, especially if you like those two actors.

Aside from the villification of the former Soviet Union (although to be fair the story is set in the Stalin era), Tom Hardy was excellent. Definitely a cut above what one often finds on Amazon Prime.

I can't think of a mainstream movie that better depicts the terror of Stalinist Russia! The fact that Berardinelli states in his review that "Today's Russian government has disputed the authenticity of Child 44's depiction of the Soviet Union in the early 1950s..." points to the disconnect that exists between those that comment versus those that document. Seriously James? I rewatched this movie after many years and find it to be a timeless representation of the horrors of suppression of free thought and expression of a nation subjected to the paranoia of one individual. History has shown Stalin to have been second to none...including his contemporary Hitler...when it came to the subjugation of the masses in the pursuit of ill conceived personal hubris. Tom Rob Smith's source book was a compelling read and I found this adaptation to be just as depressing and terrifying and sad...and compelling.

terrific production values, totally bought the setting. some great set pieces. a dumb, convoluted story, an unbelievable hero

Of course the book is much better and it's a bit hard to follow at the beginning - trying to provide too much backstory - but I thought the middle and end were well done.

Excellent movie! Great acting and suspenseful. Best part was you really didn't know what direction it would go. Not your run of the mill post WWII movie. Highly recommend.

We absolutely loved this movie. Tom Hardy is exceptional as usual. The plot is excellent and this is one of the best movie we have seen in a long time.

How come I never heard of this movie!? Has it been so devoured by the "film critics" the rest of us never got to enjoy it since 2015? As someone intimately familiar with both the repressive Soviet state and the modern Russia (aka Mordor), I greatly enjoyed watching this film. What a brilliant idea, based on a true story and accurate cultural context - yes, someone would come and bury you and your family for your apartment there. Not only is this an intense crime thriller, everyone is against the investigator. Loved all the actor performances.

A boring, long-winding test of blind obedience messy drama...

Terrific acting by Tom Hardy. A definite thriller with a reminder of how autocratic countries carry out their business.
