City of Angels Reviews

Feb 9, 2025

"City of Angels" is a must-watch for anyone who believes in angels—or even just wonders about their presence. I don't see this film as pure fiction; there’s so much truth woven into its story, and I feel like I watched it for a reason. Some scenes and quotes genuinely moved me and will stay with me forever. Maybe we are all angels in some way. Maybe you are an angel. Maybe I am. Watching this movie felt like unlocking a deeper part of my consciousness, one that has always been drawn to the idea of angels. I’ve had a lifelong fascination with them, but this film left me completely blown away. And the funny thing? It stars Nicolas Cage. I’ve never really taken him seriously before, but his performance here is outstanding. I cried more than once. This film is something special.

One of the romantic classics of the 90s ages well as the story continues to be easy to relate to and the ending is pretty unpredictable.

This has got to be one of the worst films ever! No quality control evident. The plot and script are abysmal, with the most inane cliches imaginable. So predictable and boring. The pears metaphor at the end is excruciating - all 4 of us watching were laughing uncontrollably at its stupidity by the end.

"City of Angels" had the potential to be good, but fell short. The writers could have spent more time on character development and a better ending. It doesn't tug at your heartstrings the same way as "Moonstruck".

This is the worst movie I've ever seen.

Love the gentleness of this movie. Ryan and Cage give great performances. Cage is so tender. Highly recommend.

"Wings of Desire," the German film that supposedly inspired this Hollywooden garbage, is one of my favorites, so I thought I would give "City of Angels" a try. After all, how bad could it be? Answer: Really, really bad. The only thing the two films have in common is angels who wear dark overcoats. That's it. "Wings of Desire" is a deeply moving and profound celebration of the joy of being alive, even if only temporarily. Its message is that to be alive, even if only briefly, is a privilege and a gift. "City of Angels," in contrast, is about theology: god, belief, the afterlife, souls, etc. Yes, there's love, too, but it's schmaltzy and overwrought. And, as is often the case, Nicholas Cage's acting leaves a lot to be desired. Conclusion: Watch "Wings of Desire," instead.

Some things are true whether you believe 'em or not. I can't see you, but I know you're there. It's heart warming affairs, everyone needs a visitor sometimes. He is watching & taking care of his children. Well, seldom seeing Cage casting this so well rather than the usual actions

Nick and Meg, a love story for the ages, if your friends don't like this film then they arent your friend no more. Yo she dies at the end though so for real, keep your tissues close by. Watch it, cry, have sex, then watch it again. Also wear a damn helmet when you ride a damn bike, god forbid you get hit by a semi truck carrying logs after just having had sex w Nick Cage.

In Los Angeles, California, Seth (Nicolas Cage) is one of many angels who watch over humans and protect them in unseen ways. Seth's main responsibility is to appear to those who are close to death and guide them to the next life. During this task, Seth and one of his fellow angels, Cassiel (Andre Braugher), enjoy asking people what their favorite thing in life was. Despite these daily encounters, they have trouble understanding human beings and their ways, as angels lack human senses. While waiting to escort a man undergoing heart surgery to the other world, Seth is impressed by the vigorous efforts of the surgeon, Maggie Rice (Meg Ryan), to save the ill-fated man's life and her sincere anguish at her failure to do so. Seth soon becomes preoccupied with Maggie and decides to become visible to her. They develop a friendship which soon turns to mutual attraction, although Maggie is already involved with one of her colleagues, Jordan Ferris. Seth then meets Nathaniel Messinger, one of Maggie's patients, who can sense Seth's presence and that of other angels. Nathaniel relates to Seth that he, too, had once been an angel but, by way of the free will granted equally to mortals and angels, decided to become human through the process he refers to as "falling". Seth begins to consider exercising this option so that he can be with Maggie, and she learns he is an angel. Seth decides to become human through the symbolic gesture of jumping from the top of a skyscraper. Immediately upon awakening, he starts to experience all of the human feelings and sensations that he had never been able to understand, beginning with physical injury and pain. Now human, Seth heads to the hospital to see Maggie, but is told that she has gone to her uncle's mountain cabin for a break... Roger Ebert gave City of Angels three stars, saying Meg Ryan was at her best here, but the film was "more of a formula story" than the original Wings of Desire, and that many of its qualities were lifted from there. In Variety, Emanuel Levy positively reviewed Cage as "endlessly resourceful" and Ryan as "terrifically engaging". In The Christian Science Monitor, Jennifer Wolcott compared it to Ghost (1990) and Contact (1997) as a U.S. film that could explore religion and love, highlighting Maggie's realization that her life will continue after the death of her blood cells, and that love is more than "a chemical reaction". Sun-Sentinel reviewer Roger Hurlburt praised the acting, direction and "profound" feelings, and advised readers, "don't forget the Kleenex". Wenders was satisfied with the adaptation of his work, remarking, "It's done with respect, with a sense of discovery all its own". The New York Times' Stephen Holden wrote the standard romantic clichés were "sumptuously" displayed, Cage resembled a serial killer more than an angel, and he preferred Ryan. This American loose remake of Wim Wenders classic "Der Himmel über Berlin" (1987) is not working at all. Nicholas Cage is doing the sad puppylook throughout the film, Meg Ryan is a bit lost in her role and the general set up and production is just too romcom silly that makes the storyline end up on the sideline. See "Der Himmel über Berlin" instead.

Story/Screenplay: (4/5) Very interesting for the first half, then diminished a bit as it progressed. Still, a very good story. Duration/Tempo: (4/5) At 1 hour and 54 minutes, it's a longer than average movie that felt much shorter. Cast & Crew: (4.5/5) Nicolas Cage, Meg Ryan, Andre Braugher, and Dennis Franz were all excellent. Summary: (4/5) The story was good, the cast was excellent, and the film felt short. A thumbs up.
