Private Fears in Public Places Reviews
I liked this film, for the way the various characters manage to open up to their partner/friend/relative, the thoughtful dialogue and there's the ocassional amusing situation that I enjoyed too. I liked that it tackled basic themes, of isolation, aging and so on but in a decent way. Perhaps a little sentimental but its not an awfully cheesy film as such. Its a good, thoughtful film, a little bittersweet but generally its a film I'd recommend.
"The tenderness with which Resnais observes their efforts makes for genuinely enchanting entertainment."
Ayckbourn in French: what was I thinking? It's very stagey, and not a little weird. I don't think we really connected with this one, despite good reviews and festival awards.
the movie is boring to death and I think Resnais should have hired a better director or art, honestly.
Six people interconnected, but with their loneliness never touched. Their actions always had an effect in the others as their "roads" will be changed. I liked the atmospheres (closed places, always snowing, even in the crowd everything seems lonely).
Boring. I couldn't connect with the stories or the characters, they seemed too artificial and the acting was not convincing. Furthermore, the ever-present-snow fall after each scene was disturbing. Shortly: a waste of time.
No every story has its just ending, the movie also really has no message to give. But it definitely is a "fresh" movie, especially for the direction and the way the characters have been formed, at times, moulded.
The intertwined stories were well-done, but something about the production of it felt like an 80's after-school special.
First a regret: a story about people who live in Paris but you only see little glimpses of the city, names of streets or cafes. Still it's a nice movie and it isn't neither predictable or cliche. It's about feelings and needs, about people who aren't happy at the beginning and who don't find happiness near the end. It makes you think and that's always a good thing.
Jan 2010 - Obviously does need meet your expectation if you keep looking for the good old Resnais but still I found it a light sweet portrayal of the characters. The dissolves and the music gives the movie a dreamlike quality and the very mild humor of late Resnais is present through the movie.
