Consecration Reviews

Sep 7, 2024

Not for everyone as it is a bit of a slow burn. But I actually liked it. I think the twists were cleverly executed if you have the patience.

Inept, pointless and boring, Consecration is a massively missed opportunity that's neither scary nor interesting, and even the reliable Jena Malone is surprisingly wooden here.

It was never clear WHAT the main character was? Not scary at all.

Jan 11, 2024

Not really a horror film, but its a definitely a great mystery thriller when Jena Malone character tries to find out what happened to her brother who was murdered in a convent that has a dark mysterious religious past.

This movie actually had a great plot and was well thought out. The acting was also very good, I really enjoyed this movie, not sure why everyone else is hating on it.

As one review accurately stated .... It's a challenging reflective experience, by which I very amused.

With a premise reminiscent of a Supernatural subplot and a style that was refreshing more realistic than gothic this movie wasn't bad until the dragged out shyamalan-ish reveal at the end. Imagine a B version of the 6th Sense where the scene at last 10x as long.

Jun 13, 2023

it's much better than the ratings are saying, but nothing too compelling. the last few minutes felt like sequel bait, and it's just not good enough for that to get funded.

May 21, 2023

it started out good but got boring real fast.

Opening with a voiceover of Jena Malone's character Grace Consecration tries to explore the consequences of childhood trauma and a spiritual crisis. After her brother's suicide Grace is forced to confront not only her troubled past but the dark force that took her brother away. With a running time of 90 minutes the film never gets to a clear point becoming another messy religious horror story. Everything is left at a surface level leaving the viewer as confused as if you were asked to explain the movie without having seen it first. The poorly written script brings a confusing timeline and narrative taking away any chance of the cast of giving a good performance. Malone's character never gets to be clear with her emotions and motivations. Is she grieving her brother and wants to know the truth? She's looking for a spiritual awakening? Both? We will never really know. The remaining characters doesn't add to the story only the nuns being creepy from time to time. On the bright side, this film has a good cinematography and locations that can become the only reason why you finished the film waiting for an improvement from the story. At the end, Consecration turned out to be what is expected from this films; another generic horror movie with religious subjects. Consecration is now available on Shudder.

MOVIE REVIEW Consecration – Genre: Horror, Thriller Year Released: 2023 Runtime: 1h 31m Director(s): Christopher Smith Writer(s): Christopher Smith, Laurie Cook Cast: Jena Malone, Danny Huston, Janet Suzman Where To Watch: streaming on Shudder May 19, 2023 RAVING REVIEW: Allow me to pull back the curtain on CONSECRATION, a film that allows you along on a journey through this theological maze. Often, the film's narrative will leave you scratching your head at the examination of an intense dissection of the Catholic Church. There is something here, but it won't be a journey that everyone will enjoy. Enter Grace, played to perfection by the incomparable Jena Malone. This London-based ophthalmologist lives a life detached from religion, focused on the concrete and scientific worlds. However, the mystery around her brother, who was a priest, pulls her into this unfamiliar world, upending her understanding of life. The plot evolves as she arrives at the cryptic labyrinth of a Scottish Highlands convent, and the truth she uncovers begins to blur the lines between her past and the church's impenetrable facade. Sharing this quest with her is Father Romero, depicted by Danny Huston. Their journey exposes bone-chilling secrets that shake the Church's foundations, turning what seemed like a classic detective story into a spectral thriller. The narrative reaches its peak when it pushes the boundaries of horror/thriller, allowing viewers to rethink their stance on morality, spirituality, and the demons that lurk within us all. Sadly, the thrill of the chase is lost amidst a plot that tries to fly too close to the sun. Christopher Smith and Laurie Cook, the minds behind the screenplay, appear to bite off more than they can chew, juggling an overabundance of themes. This leads to a plot that loses focus and forces the audience to make too many educated guesses. CONSECRATION finds its heart in Grace's introspective journey and her wrestling match with religious convictions. The rugged Scottish Highlands serves as a reflective backdrop, echoing society's stringent norms and doctrines. The cast keeps any plot-driven pitfalls from making the film unwatchable; even as the story suffers, they rise above and deliver surprisingly solid performances. Malone's portrayal of the dubious Grace is riveting; Huston creates a counter, adding tension as Father Romero and Janet Suzman as Mother Superior rounds out the acclaimed trio. The film's attempt to criticize the Church feels more like a brush on the surface than a deep dive, leaving the viewers wanting a more in-depth analysis. I saw where they wanted to go but was left a few stops away. CONSECRATION impresses with its muted palate, creating an atmosphere of solemnity. The horror elements were well done; they kept the film grounded enough to prevent it from seeming silly. Director Christopher Smith's creativity manages to shine through, yet his ambitions need to be within reach. The plot attempts to regain lost momentum with a twist ending; this last-minute injection of excitement falls short of recapturing the initial allure of CONSECRATION, leaving the viewer yearning for a more fulfilling resolution. While Jena Malone's presence in the film is certainly a highlight, the overall viewing experience left much to be desired. While the concept shows some promise in terms of originality, its execution fails to fully captivate and engage the audience. Despite the film's visually striking still images, the final product ultimately proves to be less effective and impactful than anticipated. While the film's flaws are not irredeemable, they are significant enough to prevent it from being truly appealing or satisfying on a deeper level.

Entertaining. However the wife and I had no clue what the point was.

The story seems great, but the movie lacks of horror. If you want to see nuns, that's a great movie for you then. If you want something scary, not worth it.

Consecration swims in the same lane as the exorcist and other catholic themed horrors...and though not scary, the premise that a relic is behind a lot of murders is a good plot. Malone pulls off the anti-god character well.

Mar 17, 2023

While Jenna Malone elevates this dreary supernatural horror movie, her captivating performance isn't enough to mask how mediocre it is. Consecration plays on familiar ground in the hopes that a few twists will offer a fresh experience, but it ultimately falls into genre cliches and becomes confusing after the third act.

I saw one trailer for Consecration! And ever since I saw it, I kept the film in the back of my head, telling myself, "You saw the trailer. You have to see the movie". And I wholly regret taking my own advice. Some of the acting is good from some of the more experienced actors in the film, but that's basically it. It's not scary, it's boring, the characters are uninteresting, it's full of non-stop exposition dumping and cliches, and the twists are ridiculous. This is definitely one of those movies that wedged its way out of the bad reputation of January only to make a bad reputation of its own. It's not even a film so stupid it's entertaining. It's just dull. Flat out dull.

Great exteriors (hard to screw up SCOTLAND on film), but the rest is just a convoluted mess… with no responsibility being placed on the otherwise excellent actors.
