Constantine's Sword Reviews
Yet another brilliant documentary questioning religion and the political/military structure surrounding religion for the purposes of controlling larger populations when undergoing military and ruling objectives. The more people who educate themselves with information from books and films like "Constantine's Sword," the more that reason would begin seeping into our population.
Documentaries cannot be complete without two sides of the story ; and while I grasp the indifference this Former priest has towards Catholicism; I don't comprehend what motivates his story.....considering no religious entity or organization is perfect? Another fine point to mention is, within this documentary there were no mention of the actual Catholics and Church Officials and Churches and Convents who housed the Jewish in an effort to protect them during the Nazzi Regime; Often times because of the direction of the Church....Maybe this information wouldn't serve the Films intent sufficiently ? Overall there is an immense amount of thought provoking material, but I do not think the average person would care much for the dry and ill intended material . 3 Stars
It's not much more than a talking head documentary or a really well researched History channel show. I don't mean that to come across as demeaning as it sounds, because this film is pretty informational, even if I think it's conclusions are a little extreme and inaccurate. What doesn't work for me is how procedural the film progresses. I wish we had spent more time with Carroll on his personal journey, but then I probably would have complained about there not being enough objective facts involved. I don't know what it is I didn't care for, but this didn't work for me all the way.

An honest, balanced look at the Catholic church's less-than-awesome past. James Carroll confronts a lot of important issues, but doesn't preach about them - just asks you to think. Also, that evangelical pastor they interviewed totally had an affair with a gay prostitute after the movie was finished and that's pretty hilarious.
It has to stretch a bit to link the Catholic Church's actions (or lack thereof) during the Holocaust with Evangelicals trying to convert the entire US Air Force Academy, but it does a wonderful job of talking about how people of faith need to take responsibility for religion's failures in order to make religion viable and useful to society.
James Carrol's theory that the Cross is a violent rather than peaceful symbol is intriguing, as is the connections he makes between the Antisemitism from the formation of the Church, to the Holocaust, and finally the disquieting merge between Evangelical Christianity and the American Military. Carrol makes some bold, possibly true, statements but his arguments are too thinly drawn for my taste. Its also hard for me to connect the Catholics with Evangelicals because of how much the latter dislikes the former.
An occasionally confusing, but truly sincere, look at how the Christian church has been used to inflame the passions of the people in the pursuit of the powerful's lust for even more power. This documentary examines how religious belief has been turned into antisemitism; how the true values of Christianity (love, peace and forgiveness) have been twisted to wage war on scapegoats; and how the evangelical movement in the United States is influencing politics to an alarming degree. Disturbing, yet necessary viewing for anyone who believes the church is pure. Of course, anyone who believes that won't watch this out of principal!
Former priest James Carroll brings to light some important facts but I found this slow/dull at times.

This documentary explores the relationship between religion and war. The evangelical movement in the U.S. Armed Forces and government. It also explores the Catholic Church's role in anti-semantic activities through the ages. History buffs and people who enjoy social commentary will enjoy this.
