Contraband Reviews
Lots of intertwined events and action. Lacks a little direction, sometimes feels like it is aimlessly wandering about. Stellar cast all excels in character, cinematography is great and enough adrenaline rushes. Just nice movie night flick
Wasn't good or bad....just too much going on

I have seen a number of Kormakur‘s absorbing Icelandic films & this, a re make of a Icelandic film where he played the Mark Wahlberg character (but did not direct) has a pretty interesting premise but is handled with enough contrivances not to mention plot holes that could sink a ship (figuratively) the size of the tanker in the film sailing between New Orleans & Panama. Little logic plays a part in this mess which, since the script seems thrown together without any sense of linear clarity. Trying to make some rational attempt at a coherent plot & it's unbelievable details is a losing proposition. The action set pieces are also awkwardly handled besides & what motivates them is, IMO, unfocused & devoid of sufficient tension & excitement. Too bad because the cast is a solid one set adrift (pun intended) in a sea of mediocrity. Another Kormakur American film EVEREST was a bit of an improvement over this farrago but his Icelandic works as a director are of considerably greater quality, so far anyway.
i thought i would enjoy this movie but i was not a big fan of this mark Wahlberg and everybody in the movie did a great job at acting but it was boring.
De um modo geral, é um filme ótimo para passar o tempo.
The pros: the cast is great and the production is well done. The cons: it's like they started a little plot fire without enough fuel and then started looking around the room for anything else to throw on it... furniture... Jackson Pollock paintings... anything. But if you like Mark Wahlberg and his stellar supporting cast, it's worth suspending your disbelief for a couple hours. This is more on the tense / thriller end of Wahlberg's spectrum... not feel good or fun.
Underrated Wahlberg movie. Worth the one time watch. Fun movie
I enjoyed this movie and Mark Wahlberg in the leading roll. Not his best movie, but FAR from his worst. Solid Movie.
A movie that started off seriously and straightforward that went off the rails with its multiple twist and turns that destroyed the overall tone of the movie that they were portraying in the first half of this film.
I think this might be one of those fake movie posters in a real movie, it just wished upon a star to be a real boy. If you've already seen Gone in 60 Seconds, you've seen this movie, except it's way less fun and magnificently predictable as a combination of heist movie tropes and generic action flick. Twists are hiding around the corner as well as Michael Myers behind a shrub on a suburban street, with casting choices that rob any sort of surprise as to who is and isn't a protagonist. It's dull for very long stretches, with surprisingly thorough scenes dedicated to the specifics of cargo ship engineering or random characters just having conversations that lead nowhere to give a sense of amicability. Though technically rated R, the film doesn't actually make use of nearly as well as it could have; while it touches on brutality at times, most of the violence in this film comes from guys beating up on one innocent woman. And perhaps the greatest cardinal sin this film commits: J.K. Simmons feels painfully underused in a simple role that doesn't make use of his talent. If you think this film looks interesting and creative, rest assured that it's not; save yourself the pain and just move along to something else. (1/5)
Entertaining with a lack of originality and a confusing plot. There's too much plot and too little character development. Watching a hero progress due in large part to lucky breaks and dumb moves by others isn't really a good look. It aspires to The Departed but lands in the bargain bin.
I wasn't expecting much but this actually wasn't bad and had a surprising complexity to it.
Absolutely worth the watch in 2021 an amazing story and nonstop action will keep you on the edge of your seat.
I've seen better Wahlberg efforts. Because the film tries to magnify its darkness, most of the characters remain in the dark too, a remnant of their stereotypes. If there is any salvation, it is in the seeking of bloody revenge, bloody physical revenge for all of the scummy characters who earn their unhappy endings.
Could've been worse but it was below average and there wasn't anything interesting other than the cast, Mark Wahlberg especially. It was confused and disconnected. Oh it made me miss The Italian Job so much.
Had the makings of a great special effects thriller, casting was good, didn't watch from the beginning but it quickly became convoluted. Watching it on our old faithful 25 inch Sony console in our darkened family room made it difficult at times to see what was going on in the night scenes. In any case, did not think it was generic. I don't watch that many movies these days so I thought the container ship concept was novel. Some reviewers said it wasn't original, but I guess I wouldn't know. Does Ben Foster get any roles where he doesn't play the 'rat-bastard'? And Haas's face is forever imbedded in my mind as the Amish kid.
Cool action flick. Even though it gets kind of convoluted, and its twists are pretty cliche, it's entertaining enough, especially if you're a Wahlberg fan.
