Courage Under Fire Reviews
Edward Zwick's direction veers towards histrionics at times, but Courage Under Fire relies on staunch acting in completing its mission.
They wouldn't make this movie today!
Zwick's non-linear character study has some strong acting and the screenplay has enough intelligence to avoid being schmaltzy or too saccharine in it's final act.
I can't believe this movie is only getting a 66% audience score on RT--Great story, great actors, great acting. One of my all time favorite movies--and one that I originally didn't even want to see.
The acting was excellent! And although I figured out the ending of the movie early in the movie, I liked the plot line a lot. The action things were expertly produced and gave the feel of being right there in it. I also thought the dialog was well done as well as the costumes and music. It's a well-produced movie, and I loved the characters and the way they were developed and presented throughout the movie.
During the Gulf War Colonel Nathaniel Sterling is caught in the middle of a firing accident He comes home to find out what really happened but his superiors want him to bury it Captain Karen Walden is his assignment to investigate after she's killed during a medevac mission of a downed helicopter There's more to the story though as several crew members each have a different version of what happened All that matters is Sterling finding out the truth What is honor? What is glory? What is valor? What is any of our heroics without knowing the full extent of it? The trailer makes you think this investigation will be colliding with the war scenes but no The layout is just switching from the present of Sterling digging to find answers then randomly cutting to Walden in flashbacks I didn't like the layout of this The sleuthing scenes are so slow and boring It stinks too all these actors never share the same scenes together This movie is also too damn long
Bit long winding military drama, how war conflict impacts physiologically that haunt many people till today & drive them insane. Such sadness...
Just watched this again after many years. It's a great watch. Great story. Great actors. Only wish we saw more of Ryan!
What I expected to be a procedural drama ended up being a well layered, political suspense thriller that, despite feeling less original and being somewhat predictable, was still engaging enough to keep my full attention. The plot worked for me more because of the way it was presented as the audience followed two concurrent storylines affecting the protagonist, the questions raised from a mission Washington's character commanded and one he is later ordered to investigate, each of which were parsed out and slowly presented to the audience through the use of interviews and flashbacks. Decent cast here too with many recognizable names. 6.5/10
I thought this movie was absolutely amazing. Meg Ryan is amazing! Denzel is amazing! Matt Damon is amazing! Such an inspiring war film.
An updated version of the Japanese classic "Rashomon". The first 100 minutes are excellent as well as full of intrigue & tension, with great performances from Washington and co. However, the final 15 are pretty awful, with the usual happy-clappy Hollywood ending.
It only works because of Denzel.
Courage Under Fire is Edward Zwick's 8th film and it stars Denzel Washington, Matt Damon, Meg Ryan and Lou Diamond Phillips and it's about an officer that has to find out what truly happened to Meg Ryan's character and battles with the aftermath of an accidental friendly fire. Denzel gives a really strong performance as the lead man, and Matt Damon lost a considerable amount of weight for a role that wasn't even that important in the movie. But when he was on screen you could feel the emotion is his voice. Great performance from him aswell. My problem with this movie is that it's really slow paced and there are some times in the movie where you start to lose interest in the progression of the story. Despite that Courage Under Fire is still pretty entertaining.
Great movie. Very balanced blend of action, drama and emotionality. Great cast of Meg Ryan, Denzel Washington, Matt Damon and some more minor roles. Everyone played their part well and came across as strong, believable characters. Meg Ryan's main character did a great example of a role model of a good military officer. Always puts service before self, the group before herself, and puts herself in danger many times to save her men. I want to praise this in the Joseph Klunder Veterans Challenge.
A gripping story that continued to impress as the mystery resolved. Recommend for sure
the sort of movie that you need to see a few times before you start liking. very good film
Courage Under Fire is a war movie with much sentiments and it is rare to see this side of Meg Ryan. She did really good in it. And there was also newly born star at the time, Matt Damon.
Strong acting performances. Intelligent and dramatic script. A great study of mistakes and how honor and valor is still possible. Meg Ryan was a bit annoying outside of her standard romantic comedy. 7.75 / 10
