Cyrus Reviews
What the hell? This movie would be one of many plausible reasons why people fear jumping back into the dating pool again during their mid-life years.
Really hard to believe a guy would not run from a woman with that kinda emotional baggage. The kid is the very definition of a man child, a spiteful one at that. Some of the dialogue is really far fetched. For instance, if a kid told me his mom oversexualized when she wants to slow down; I would have to ask how and why do you know intimate details of your Mom’s sex life! I guess when you look like John Reilly, you have take the poon with the poison.
Genuinely slight as indicated by little engagement, the Duplass brothers craftly hone their mumblecore approach with playful cinematography and natural characterization towards aspectual societal conflicts amid sincere chemistries, remarkably pulled off by the well-cast performatively soulful emittance. Those viewers expecting a cookie cutter relationship comedy/drama might be disappointed since the film never tries to hint where these characters fates are headed. The performances are exceptional. I always enjoy watching John C. Reilly's work & here he comes through with his most remarkable performance, IMO, since CHICAGO. Much more of a subtle characterization than he sometimes presents. The same holds true for the rest of the cast & Jonah Hill as the mother obsessed son manages to be creepy & sympathetic at the same time. Marisa Tomei & Catherine Keener are interesting as usual. The best aspect of this somewhat dark comedy is that the outcome of the mother/son/boyfriend interaction is realistically played & unpredictable so this ambiguity will not please every audience member. But, that, for me, makes this film all that much more involving & worth experiencing.
The audience score is unfair. Slow burn but a hell of a movie. Stick through it! It's a unique comedy that deserves love. Amazing job by the entire cast. Deserves a cult following.
I love the main actors in this movie and couldn't believe I hadn't seen it yet. It was a waste of time. The storyline was much too simple. In addition, at one point there was an affair briefly pictured and then that never materialized or incorporated in the story.
I came across this movie for the first time on July 10,2023 and at first I wondered how is it that I haven't seen a movie with the 2 stars in a film together. After about 45 min I stopped wondering why and I understood why it wasn't advertised hardly at all or atleast enough to where I just found out about it. Don't waste your time watching this film it's not a comedy just awkward and weird.
A very authentic movie that has some funny parts. I feared a paint by numbers romantic comedy or something that was dumb, but this was neither. I was happily surprised. Don't watch if you want a roller coaster or something artsy that's hard to follow. Perfect if you want something entertaining and chill.
Expected a goofy movie like Step Brothers but it was more drama related than comedic.
Not John C Reilly's worst movie but definitely nowhere near his best. A lot of awkward comedy which some of it landed and some of it didn't so that's why I give it 3 stars
This is a very subtle film - the comedy is almost all awkward-related aka cringe-y type comedy, but not too over the top, in your face. Its quirky, its somewhat low key and it appealed to me. I liked the characters and I felt Jonah Hill and John C. Reilly got along quite well on screen. I did find some scenes quite funny but its certainly not a permanently laugh out loud film (I got the ocassional big laugh from it but its not constant, put it that way) - its a gentle comedy, one that I really quite liked. I think its to do with the characters quirks. Their all quite likeable characters - there's something quite endearing about John (played by John C. Reilly) but their not perfect at all either - thats fine, their not bad people, even if they are a bit strange at times - mainly the titular character, Cyrus and also John. I liked the light and floaty, upbeat and subtle type music played in the background and the general sense of optimism present throughout, it cheered me up, in a way. This film may not appeal to all but it did to me, so I'd recommend it.
I've seen Cyrus so many times since seeing it in the theater in 2010. It's an amazingly warm hearted and funny movie. The interactions between John C Reilly and Jonah Hill are so hilariously cringe that I can physically feel it. The Duplass brothers couple that with very real and heartfelt relationship drama between 2 ultimately lonely and stuck people trying to get to a better place. It's a pretty special movie that I consistently come back to.
I thought the plot was a bit weird, but turned out to be a sweet movie. Pretty funny
A lot of dating apps give users the ability to exclude certain people, like those of a certain height, or people who smoke. I'd love to have an option to exclude people who like movies like this, or "mumblecore" in general. The central irony of "mumblecore" is that the films lose all verisimilitude in their attempts to make the dialogue and camerawork more human and simple. None of the interactions feel real. It seems logical that improvised dialogue would end up being more natural, but the actual result isn't natural because in real life people aren't in front of a camera crew and they don't have a narrative agenda. It seems like treating the camera like a person watching the action would make the visuals feel more natural, but because the viewer isn't an actual character in the film, it feels unnatural for the camera to be treated like it is a person observing the action. The things I found interesting enough to warrant a movie was the way that Cyrus was manipulating John and Molly by lying about what each had said about the other, and the way that John and Cyrus worked against each other late in the movie. It is unfortunate that the movie took an entire hour to evolve to the point where it was actually utilizing the interesting part. And more unfortunate that once the film got interesting, it only stayed that way for 10 or so minutes. Instead of utilizing the deceitful dynamic between John and Cyrus for effective comedy, the film just devolves into quiet, awkward scenes which do nothing to leverage the situation for comedic effect. Jonah Hill is like a real life Cartman from South Park. His deviousness could have been funny. John C. Reilly is at his funniest when he is excited and energetic, when his facial expressions and the register of his voice reach ludicrous contortions and registers. There is no good reason that these two actors should've been wasted like this. The devious and frustrating thing, and the reason I wrote such a lengthy review, is that this movie is yet another movie with a significant delta between critic ratings and audience ratings. I don't think critics actually love movies like this. I think critics are bought and paid for by the movie industry to push these films because they are wildly cheap to make and they can earn back a large profit for the studios that make them. If you don't spend money on decent cinematography, or actual scripts, or sets, or really anything but actor and director salaries, you can use those big names to trick viewers into buying tickets despite not having put much actual effort into the film itself. For these reasons I would rename "mumblecore" something more accurate: "charlie brown core." These movies are footballs that are yanked away from the audience right after the ticket has been purchased. They are ploys to reap as much profit as possible by putting as little effort (ie money) as possible into the creation of the film. This is why they have generally flaccid audience ratings. Audiences will hopefully eventually learn their lesson and stop paying to see movies by the purveyors of "mumblecore."
Engaging relationship study from the Duplass Brothers is semi-unrealistic, yet funny & surprisingly endearing, thanks in no small part to the great work from Reilly, Tomei, & Hill (and despite the distractingly unnecessary snap zooms). #nitrosMovieChallenge
Not in the least funny and annoying to watch the dysfunction.
A usual plot in the story but used in a lighter tone, but not one that has immense jokes for such a subject, the camera work here was really lousy, something seen in an amateur video!
Pretty good mediocre heart warming at times movie starring John c Riley, Marisa tomei, and Jonah Hill. At some parts of the movie I really cared for the characters but the overall movie felt really dull and a drag at times. And I think it's supposed to be that, man indie movies for some reason have the weirdest feeling in the world but you're glad that you felt that feeling but it really affects the movie.
