Dark Days Reviews

Jul 20, 2024

This is the documentary that made me interested in documentaries. It's a well-balanced, realistic look at the lives of our unhoused neighbors in New York City's subway and train tunnels in the 1990s. What makes it well-balanced is that it portrays their humanity--although on one level it is devastating to see this way of life, it is no pity party.

The best documentary movie ever made!

Equal parts inspiring and depressing. A literal subculture beneath the wealth. A side of truth that not many people get to see.

I've probably had this film on my "to see"-list for 15 years and it was sweet to finally peep it. In Marc Singer's first and only film we enter the underground tunnels of NYC. Things live here. Mostly rats and bugs, but also homeless people and they're dogs. We watch the frustrations, the happiness, the abusiveness and life as a bum in general. There are all kinds of people here, most of them with drug habits, some cleaner than others - but all of them are dirty and with some heavy loads. I like most of the people here. Very true people with some interesting philosophies. It's done in black and white - something that's probalby for the best as everything is dark around there anyways. All the "luxory" surprize me a lot. The way they are always improving the shacks, got 온라인카지노추천's and make they're own food. A nice soundtrack by DJ Shadow is a big hit for me as he is one of my favorite artists. He even did a single for this film but most of the songs are taken from previous records. Good documentary with ups, downs, surprizes but firstly very real stories that got something to tell. 7.5 out of 10 rats.

Dark Days is a pretty cool homeless documentary. It doesn't really go anywhere but I enjoyed the dark and bleak atmosphere

An amazing documentary from first time director Marc Singer about a community of homeless people living just off the underground subway tracks in NYC. They have built there own shacks and have tapped into the city's power supply. They have scavenged furniture and appliances and live in what are essentially small, scaled-downed homes, some with pets, some with friends. Singer's film making process somewhat mirrored this community as he worked with borrowed and hand-made equipment with essentially no budget. You get to know these people very well, and the film humanizes these people for the viewer. It may not be an explicitly political film, but anything that creates human connections across vast economic divides is doing something political. DJ Shadow provides a remarkable soundtrack.

This masterpiece is supported by the accompanying 'making of dark days' doc. Watch both and you'll see how this film eventually got made against great odds. Deep, deep work from all involved in escaping their own desperate subterranean lives. The fake DJ shadow promoter..? Just watch.

I could see this being a really interesting investigative report story. Presented as a one hour special or perhaps an ongoing series you would definitely find this story of a homeless city beneath the streets compelling. Unfortunately as the viewer we're given no context and no explanation and as a result you're left with just a rambling collective of their personal experiences. This isn't enough to sustain interest for the whole film.

Atmospheric documentary on the subterranean homeless population of New York city. A very well made picture considering the subjects basically produced it too.

Depictions of such cruel circumstances that befall people naturally have a gloomy, haunting quality but the humanity we are shown is overpowering and in the end we aren't depressed, we are uplifted.

Best fly on the wall I've ever seen. Captivating.

This was a captivating film I had wanted to see for some time now. Even though I know the world is like this, I keep on with hope, optimism and blind faith that something can be done to ameliorate the human condition on a global scale. No one should have to live like this unless of course they choose to do so.

Brilliant and deeply touching documentary about homeless people in a part of the the New York underground subway system. A must watch.

This documentary doesn't have narrating story it just plays out day to day on the people who live under the city of New York. It is a black and white movie, but it reminded me of late 70's almost early 80s and not late 90s. Most of this people are either on drugs, that they decided to make Amtrak their home. I didn't feel a lot empathy for this people, maybe because they seem so comfortable in this place but most of them were either high on crack while talking on camera. The only one I felt for was the mother who lost her kids from crack, you could tell that hurt her for not being able to see her kids or support them the way a mother should. It does have a happy ending, but no follow up on what truly happens afterwards.

No commentary, minimal cutting, non-intrusive but incredibly revealing and above all, raw - this stylized black and white documentary about a world living beneath another world is completely immersive.

Very insightful into the world these people lived in but only scratches the top layer of the story behind these people. Still definitely a worthy watch :)

I wouldn't think Dark Days would be recommended for those who are squeamish or claustrophobic. With that said, I haven't seen many documentaries that have had the ability to showcase its subject matter so literally yet so effectively. I can always appreciate true documentaries of this style, in which the filmmaker stays silent instead of copping out by narrating to us whether by a preachy voiceover or with equally preach words on screen what we should think. What made this film particularly interesting to me is the fact that I'm strangely attracted to such things as abandoned buildings, underground cultures, tall tales of things kept from the public etc. (basically anything found in those Weird US books). Now, I would never have the courage to step into these haunted structures but that doesn't stop me from checking out videos of them on YouTube. In Dark Days the rats, crack addicts, food foraging scenes, even a little morbid comedy and the abundance of heartbreaking stories from the homeless residents of the Freedom Tunnel steal the show and sticks with the viewer with an indelible mark.

There are people living underground, like moles, and this documentary is about them, how they live, what they think. A world you wouldn't think exist :S

One would think that a 12-year-old documentary would loose its punch, but DARK DAYS is (unfortunately) just as relevant today as it was in 2000. Grade: B+

While Ill admit its got as much style and finesse as gates of heaven which I absolutely despise, this however has the benefit of having you know, an interesting concept and interesting subjects, it was cool to see how these people lived and created their own neighborhood in the train tunnels, and it was also interesting listening to them talk, there seemed to be more intelligence to them then one may think, some of the "houses" looked pretty habitable i thought, the dark cinematography and music help create a truly dark world
