Darling Reviews

The offensiveness of Keating's story might not have been so transparent if everything else didn't feel so half-baked.

| Original Score: 4/10 | May 22, 2019

Darling is a must-see for those who want a great performance, jarring scares, and a fresh art-house take on classic themes.

Darling may not provide any easy answers, but it is a trippy, hypnotic ride through the mind of a woman who is slowly losing it.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Oct 31, 2018

While I have no fundamental problem with homage or even pastiche in film, it did strike me that there was not anything original to mention here. With so many clear muses it is difficult for me to identify what Keating brings to the table creatively.

If Darling ran any long than its 78 minutes it would become wearying. As it is, it does what it wants to do quite nicely.

Keating's film does not come close to reaching the heights of Repulsion, but this loving homage is nevertheless a gruesome winner.

| Original Score: 3/4 | Dec 5, 2016

An unconventionally conceived workplace horror movie and surreal home invasion thriller. But more impressively visual than visceral, as cityscape craft upstages storytelling, conceding to gore that ultimately loses its way in search of character depth.

Keating keeps his cards close, a common conceit of the films he's referencing: Repulsion, Rosemary's Baby, The Innocents, Persona, just to name a few. Does he succeed? You'd better believe it.

A stylish exercise in horror tropes... may be little more than an imitation, but at least the models are first-rate.

| Original Score: B- | Apr 7, 2016

More likely to dull by repetitive creep than memorably rattle the senses.

| Apr 7, 2016

For all its attempts to startle, the most startling thing about Darling is how off-target this promising director's third feature film is.

| Original Score: 1.5/5 | Apr 7, 2016

The playfully subversive twists in this slow-burning, black-and-white trifle of experimental horror are more frightening separately than collectively.

| Apr 3, 2016

It's an immaculate work of art and one of the most affecting horror movies I've ever seen.

Darling is all style over substance. But that style, from the rich black and white imagery to its creepy star, makes it worth your while.

| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Apr 1, 2016

The director's Polanski preoccupation borders on imitation. Still, Keating's flattery is sincere, and so is his wish to stylishly freak you silly.

| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Apr 1, 2016

This movie had a staring contest with me - and it won.

| Original Score: 3/4 | Mar 31, 2016

Keating ... crafts his own stylish take on the psycho and haunting genres in between winks to the classics.

| Original Score: 3/4 | Mar 31, 2016

Using the simplest of settings - and familiar genre devices - Mickey Keating's horror outing "Darling" manages to conjure an effectively unsettling miasma.

| Mar 31, 2016

Thanks to excellent work from Carter, creepy and big-eyed innocent as required and strong throughout the 75-minute film, Darling holds its own as a satisfyingly deliberate-moving thriller.

| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Mar 31, 2016

Pain and pleasure co-mingle in visceral sequences of brutality.
