Dead Man Down Reviews
J.H. Wyman's screenplay is strongly written and probably my favorite story of 2013 so far.

It’s on the strength of Farrell and Rapace, their supporting cast, and the visual confidence of the production that leaves Dead Man Down a worthwhile voyage into neo-noir territory.
| Original Score: 3/4 | Sep 12, 2022
The vengeful gangster and his plight may be a repetitive backstory, but the cryptic structuring and competent acting strengthen the refreshingly fluctuating twists.

Dead Man Down is a gritty revenge thriller wrapped around a tragic love story ... a great example of modern noir.

Shot on location in New York, Dead Man Down strives, successfully, for the gritty vérité look of '70s American cinema. And the city emerges as a character in a way we rarely see today.

At first a seemingly Hitchcockian scenario with echoes of Rear Window, the film swiftly swirls into a flashy revenge drama wearing redemption on its sleeve, for mostly enjoyable effect.

The idea for the script is solid, though its fondness for melodrama can be a little much at times. And the conclusion is somewhat forced and slightly ridiculous. But the tangled web of payback is weaved well.

Descends into utter silliness.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Aug 23, 2018
There's just far too much going on; too much for the film to be believable.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Oct 31, 2017
Dead Man Down isn't deeply satisfying but is well filmed and performed - and proof you can make a workable New York thriller with a bunch of Europeans.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Sep 5, 2017
An innocuous, unappealing and in the end an absurdly violent revenge gangster film.

Not all of it hits its mark, but when the picture starts to gain momentum at the hour mark, its distinctiveness sets in. And it's almost startling.
| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Apr 9, 2016
The cast does all that they can, but, by the end, Dead Man Down plays as a confused, noble misfire.
| Original Score: C+ | Aug 11, 2014
The plot and characters of pulpy revenge thriller Dead Man Down are pure B-movie stuff, yet stars Colin Farrell and Noomi Rapace lend the film unexpected class and conviction.

While Dead Man Down has a talented cast in Farrell, Rapace, and Howard, it ends up being a rather bland take on the revenge thriller, offering nothing new or stimulating to the genre.
| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Jul 8, 2013
Suppose Armand Assante had played the mother, not as a father, as a mother. Suppose Isabelle Huppert had taken the Colin Farrell part. This may be no more than playful, but heaven knows Dead Man Down needs as much of that as it can get.

Dead Man Down is Oplev demonstrating the same great cinematic sense he did with Millenium Series, and that revenge is never a straight line, it's a thorny bramble.

A scatter-brained plot never quite works itself out.
| Original Score: 1.5/5 | May 24, 2013
The plot takes a bit too long to get any traction and consequently the film feels rather long. Still, I like the fusion of Hollywood and European filmmaking sensibilities
