Dear Evan Hansen Reviews

Apr 22, 2025

Super emotional movie and music is incredible. I think the film adds something special that’s hard to convey in broadway. The cast is perfect and really sell the story.

This movie is made to make you feel uncomfortable. A 17 year old fantasizing about being a friend with a dead kid in front of the dead kids family. Spreading a lie across the world. Does no justice to the award wining musical. Only the end and beautiful songs redeem it a bit 5.1/10

Nice singing but not so much in storytelling

I am taken back that film got such negative reviews. And especially when I heard the reasons it was considered not worthy of glory. Not having seen the musical,I happily experienced it not as a film but as a wonderful musical. Underneath that is a treasure. The skillful portrayal of an adolescent in pain due to not feeling connected. A kind of agony. It’s a psychological wonder from my point of view as a therapist. It made perfect sense. It wasn’t a “betrayal”. Clearly the disappointment of the critics that the main character deceived the audience was NOT the point of the movie. The point was that Evan Hansen was broken. And wanted to be seen. And he was seen. Out of that came repentance and an evolution into a transformed person.

What a depressing piece of schlock. Dear god, why would you create a “musical” about a boy on the spectrum who creates a world around an imaginary fried, woven with lies only to see it all come crashing down in the second act? Does that sound uplifting or entertaining to anyone? It’s hateful manipulation of the vulnerable at best and cynical exploitation at worst. This is an awful piece that doesn’t deserve any of the many awards heaped upon it by the deluded bodies that have done so. Run, do not walk, away from travesty.

I enjoy the music but thats about it. The cast is lacking and the story makes me sick.

I kept being told I had to see this, so I checked it out. I feel like it forces too much on its viewers and that we're all supposed to think this is So Beautiful. Using a suicide like that seems wrong to me. But it has some very funny moments, and the girl who plays Zoe has a gorgeous voice.

The film adaptation of Dear Evan Hansen, originally a Broadway show, received mixed reviews and sparked controversy. While the music in the movie was praised for its quality, the overall execution fell short of expectations. Ben Platt's portrayal of a high school student as a grown adult drew criticism for its lack of believability, with his age and appearance standing out among the younger cast members. The uncomfortable dynamic between his character and a teenage girl added to the discomfort felt by viewers, detracting from the overall viewing experience. Despite the impressive musical elements, the film was heavily criticized for its poor writing and execution. The decision to adapt the Broadway show into a movie did not translate well on screen, leading to a lackluster reception from audiences and critics alike. The film's shortcomings, including the questionable casting choices and uncomfortable themes, ultimately overshadowed the positive aspects of the music. Dear Evan Hansen failed to live up to its potential as a blockbuster film, leaving a stain on both the Broadway production and the movie adaptation. Overall, the film's flaws, particularly in its handling of sensitive themes and character portrayals, marred what could have been a successful adaptation. While the music remained a standout feature, the film as a whole struggled to resonate with audiences and failed to make a lasting impact in the way it was intended.

Narcissistic, selfish, delusional teen takes advantage of a peer's death, to amplify his own existence, gain adoration and date said peer's sibling. Cynically packaged as a heroic protagonist and shining example of modern youth. Horrific story only outshone by Platt's over the top performance, which has the subtlety of an elephant in a church. I feel sorry for the likeable and decent performances by Dever, Adams, Pino and Moore, who are trying their best with the absolute trainwreck of a so called moral tale

Loved this movie. It gave me a “13 reasons why” vibe but with a lighter tone and with songs. The musical aspect was slightly distracting to me (But that’s just a personal opinion). Overall a really good movie.

The songs really aren't that good, the acting is downright bad

It's genuinely baffling that Ben Platt thought he could carry this film in a role he has absolutely and unequivocally aged out of. He doesn't look, sound, or act like a teenager, and it's just disturbing how it feels like a guy in his late 20's is trying to get with a teenager by lying to her family. The lip service it pays to mental illness is cheap pandering and doesn't bother to explore the real issues of anxiety, depression, and self harm in any meaningful way. It's like those so called charities "raising awareness" of things we're all already very aware of. They should retroactively take away his Tony for this trite vanity project. Don't waste your time with it. Platt honestly does a better job in theater camp as a smug theater kid, probably because it came from an authentic place.

From an Asian perspective, it's hard for me to experience broadway shows that are halfway across the world. This movie brought the beloved Broadway show Dear Evan Hansen to life for me. The cast was fantastic. It's rare to find a musical where I love every song, but DEH is one of those exceptions. Ben Platt's portrayal of a teenager struggling with social anxiety is spot-on. His age doesn't detract from his performance in the slightest. His portrayal and style perfectly capture the character, and anyone criticizing his appearance is simply perpetuating unrealistic beauty standards and can be hurtful to young people who identify with Evan. While I appreciate the other actors who played Evan on Broadway, Ben Platt's performance resonates with me the most. His ability to deliver the songs while staying true to the character is truly impressive. The film left me in tears.

I almost didn’t watch this as I thought it might be boring ,but I’m so glad I did. Ben Platt is absolutely brilliant with this most beautiful voice and almost all the songs are moving. I read the reviews after I watched the film ,saying he was too old to play the part and was a poor actor. Did we see the same film? I can’t believe it! Some stupid critic says that and everybody copies it like lemmings. The film was great and he was superb! I had never heard of him before but I would watch anything he was in now. Such a talent.
